Boycotting the game doesn't accomplish anything meaningful other than hurting innocent people. While The Author Who Will Not Be Named gets royalties from game sales, it's a pittance compared to what goes to the development studio and publisher. She's already absurdly rich, so she will shed no tears if this game flops, and since she only holds rights to publishing and theatrical rights, boycotting her books and plays would have more meaning. That's the thing I think a lot of the people saying to boycott the game are failing to understand. The author only owns rights to the books and theatrical releases. Those are hers and hers alone. Meanwhile, anything in the Harry Potter cinematic universe, as well as the video games, are the property of WB, and they've been working to distance themselves from the author since she made a nuisance of herself on social media. They and the game developers get the overwhelming majority of the profits from the game. She gets a pittance, because she created the IP. However, depending on how the original deal between her and WB works, she may not even see anything from games sales, but instead got a lump sum when development for the game began. Arrangements like this are complicated, and without access to the actual contract, it is hard to say what is and isn't going to happen. But what is certain is that however much she is given, it's still a fractrion compared to what everyone else gets, and WB Games has made it clear that she was not involved in the game's development. Development for the game would have started well before her comments hit social media, with contracts signed and sealed. Since the studio was contractually obligated to complete the game even after the author's comments unless WB Games chose to cancel the project, would have been financially penalized substantially had they chosen to breach contract in protest, and this is the develor's first outing so either option would have destroyed them, boycotting the game only risks bankrupting a clearly promising studio that could go on to make some genuinely incredible games if given the chance. A boycott would only accomplish hurting the hardworking people whose only crime was working on a game for an IP whose author needs to get off of social media and go away forever. In short, boycotting this game doesn't support transfolk, it hurts innocent people caught in the crossfire. There's plenty of ways you can provide meaningful support to transfolk, if you're genuinely wanting to do so. But this right here? This is the wrong hill to choose to die on.
