Dude don't judge that hard 'cause this is one of their earliest live performances. What I love about Level 42 is the fact that you have so many variations of them. There's the young group full of energy, spirit and greenness. Then you have a high-quality jazz group with much virtuoso stuff. Further you have the "pop divas" totally off the ground with number one hits. And nowadays you have a smooth and tasty "grown-up sound" with jazz, funk, soul and pop elements. It's nice to see how they changed all over the years. To me this is a wonderful privilege and one of many reasons why I love to listen to them so much.

Slogan I get where you’re coming from, and yes they evolved to suit the times and no doubt the business angle. But that Early tapes version was an epiphany for me back in 1980-81. I had very wide sense of youth cult music direction (not a bad thing, but a bit middling as they say today) as a young wet behind the ears lad, this song and Starchild was like nothing I heard before. So for me that exotic studio version is like a gold dust reference, it hit me at a critical time in my youth and thoroughly spoiled me with such expectations it is almost painful to hear a poor performance of a cherished favourite 🙏🏽

Insane tempo! I've been a fan of L42 since the beginning. Seen them live about 30 times. Just started to learn the bass because of Mark. You can't fault the attack and timing tho on this one.

@@Pulsonar, you very eloquently state your opinion and attachment to this song. That said, in this version, the band clearly extends the song quite a bit; I would not say they are trying to get out of town as fast as possible. Speed is always a factor to judge live. One of my other favorite bands, Supertramp, used to play classics like "Dreamer" as though they were at Silverstone. Final note, King here sounds like Jaco Pastorius. Scary! 😳
