I was lucky enough to see Level 42 on their 1989 tour at Wembley Arena. They played this track with Alan Murphy on guitar ( who died later that same year). He was a real legend, having played with Kate Bush and Go West. This is a great version, love it!

Heard this song for the 1st time ever yesterday & just LOVE it! Absolutely OUTSTANDING - EVERY Facet of it! ALL vocals, signature L42 chord progressions, keyboard tones, bassline, sax, drumming, guitar.. WOW! Great tune! ... the fact that it goes on for almost 10 minutes makes it all the more satisfying, too! Thanks so much for posting it!

If I had to play a track that typified 42s darker side this would be it. The lyrics are supa deep, the best I have read..'sentimental apathy..' delicious

wow! what a great find!!! They're such a fantastic group...miss Alan Murphy on guitar, but Nathan plays his butt off, too, and even quotes Alan's licks several times...their ending to this song live blew me away! Thanks for posting!! If you have the whole thing with the ending I'd love to hear/see it!!!

I love watching this over and over again. Gary and Nathan kill it! Not to mention the fact that Nathan makes me swoon when he would talk during the song! haha! They're amazing musicians! Still on a high from seeing them live in Solana Beach, and Anaheim last July! Next US tour, I hope they include this in their repertoire. ;)

Nathan up front on guitar....I've always enjoyed his playing and he put his own twist on this classic and comes out shining. The band has many a great guitar player involved over the years and Nathan has had to recreate and emulate all of those players. Fantastic job as always.

I must admit I miss Gary's subtle playing, the new boy is fantastic but a 42 drummer should sit behind the groove a bit more like Phil & Gary, they both complimented not just Mark, but the rest of the band... Not that Pete doesn't work with the band, just my preference, and I've been listening to Level 42 since I was, ahem, very young!!
@regaltip8A10 жыл бұрын
I agree, the finesse that Gary, Phil and Gavin Harrison have are hard to match.I have been a fan for nearly 30 years and as a drummer those guys are at the top of my list. Pete is good but not in the same class.
@JBass4210 жыл бұрын
Very true, even Gavin was a little too much of a powerhouse sometimes, but what he did on the 94 was great, I still remember some of it now, I was only 16 when I saw their last gig before they came back! Damn, I was upset when it was announced!

play around with the running order a bit and the staring at the sun album can sound like an album called level 42 plays the blues (in their own way). this song usually strikes me as a jazz-fusion or jazz-rock pop song, if such a thing could be said to exist. and the forever now album, with some of the non-album tracks replacing some of the album tracks, can sound/feel like their best funk-pop hybrid creation to me. complexity of retroglide notwithstanding, not sure if they've been so on the ball as songwriters for quite some time now. but sometimes (other times, "boring") the level sounds just about right for me. lot of subtlety in song-writing, both lyrically and musically. maybe works best when there's more than one hand in the song-writing and arranging, though. the middle ground between the contrasting styles of King and Lindup can be an interesting place. that's the way it seems to have worked, rather than one supporting the other, like (say) the way Mays supported Metheny, but my mind is running off on so many tangents at the moment that I seem to be singing the blues. When craftmanship in songwriting crosses my mind, I start thinking of the level(s), every now and then. When? When. Buy yourself a new pair of shoes when you turn forty-two.
