@ElevatedLawnscapes How do you level out a tall fescue lawn that has imperfections of the smoothness of the dirt, and to help with drainage? Would a 70% compost/sand mix help with this? Would you do just a 0.25" over time? USGA sand be best? Thanks!
@ElevatedLawnscapes2 ай бұрын
I have never worked with fixing drainage issues. I have seen golf courses use aeration and then working the sand into those holes to improve drainage. Have a video that showed how I did some leveling on my lawn a couple videos ago. If you are not seeding I would go with small layers over time. USGA is best if you can find and afford it but it's not necessary. It's up to you if you want to go with a mixture of sand/compost, it's a good option. Whatever you decide to go with, stick with it going forward.
@greghuizen2 ай бұрын
What was your height of cut when top dressing? Also, when you say leveling is it mostly just small bumps? I dont see how an evenly spread layer would level bigger dips.
@ElevatedLawnscapes2 ай бұрын
HOC was 1.25" and has been there every since early spring. Larger dips were addressed independently, then applied multiple passes of even layers to address overall small bumps.

7 days ago I spread compost on my lawn in the Asheville NC area and overseeded it with GCI Turf type tall fescue (from your link) and Tuckahoe Farms Kentucky Bluegrass seeds. I’ve been watering it frequently and lightly to keep the seeds moist. Now I’m noticing 3 to 5 inch white circles on the compost. I think it is actinomycetes from the compost. Is this something I should be concerned about hurting my lawn? Should I treat it with fungicide(s)? If so which fungicides? I've just changed my watering to less run time and also the last run time of the day has been moved to earlier in the day so it won't be so wet all night. Thank you in advance for your advice.
@ElevatedLawnscapes2 ай бұрын
I am not familiar with the scenario that you have currently. This is one of the reasons that I am hesitant to bring in outside soils/compost. I would say you have done what I would do, which is cut back on the water slighly but still keeping the seed moist. Then, I would wait to see if the grass blades are actually affected by it.
@lisao96772 ай бұрын
@@ElevatedLawnscapes Thanks for your reply. If I must apply a fungicide I plan on using Azoystrobin 2SC at 0.38 oz per 1,000 and Propiconazole at 2.0 oz per 1,000. In your opinion will this be okay to use on my seedlings? I contacted my extension office which ran my pics through an app and it came back as powdery mildew. But the only way to know for sure is to send off a sample which takes 3 weeks. Comparing to pics online I still think it is a filamentous bacteria called actinomycetes which is typical in compost piles. Thanks again for your time. I really enjoy your channel.
@ElevatedLawnscapes2 ай бұрын
@lisao9677 I would back down the Propiconazole rate on the young seedlings. Also, I recommend making sure you have identified the disease on the actual grass plant to make sure you are applying the correct fungicides to address the issue. If the grass plants are not being affected, I would not apply fungicide. With all the moisture during seeding sometimes you get things growing on the soil surface but they do not affect the actual grass plants.

Hey man, i know you've dealt with pythium before. I'm pretty certain i have some now in my little bentgrass plot I've been messing with in the easement behind my yard. It's crazy how bad it's gotten so quickly despite trying to stay ahead of disease with propiconazole and azoxy. I've since learned that mefenoxam is really the best thing. My question is, can i put the mefenoxam down, aerate, heavy dethatch, sand topdress and still try to get an overseed in at this point here in Ohio? Or do i need to just chalk this season up as a loss and start on fixing it next spring?
@dlandes14Ай бұрын
I'm just wondering if the pythium will affect the overseed. Don't want to waste seed, time and effort
@ElevatedLawnscapesАй бұрын
Propiconazole and azoxy does nothing for Pythium. Get the disease under control before seeding. You still have some time to seed but the window is closing day by day.
@dlandes14Ай бұрын
@ElevatedLawnscapes yeah just purchased my mefenoxam. Is one full rate app generally sufficient in stopping the disease where it's at? I was going to put down a full rate app, give things a few days to settle, then go ahead with the overseed/ repair. I don't think I have the time to wait 2 more weeks for a 2nd app.
@ElevatedLawnscapesАй бұрын
It all depends on your weather conditions and how advanced the disease is. It may take more than 1 app. The mefenoxam will not bother the seed but the consistent moisture will the conditions that favor the pythium disease.

With you in Illinois you need to get going very soon sir and get that seed in the ground in early September at the latest. Your seed should be in the ground 45-60 days before your first frost. Quick Google search says Oct 1-15 for your first frost date.
@ElevatedLawnscapes2 ай бұрын
Yeah, October is a late for that area. That is southern transition zone seeding timing like North Carolina South Carolina area.
