Re: Women in tech. Was in a phone support call with a woman and man. The woman was clearly the one who knew what she was doing, but the way it worked was that the woman explained it to the man, and then the man explained it to me. I asked why I cant just talk with the woman directly and was told that "we don´t do that here". No idea what that meant. In the end my issue got resolved so whatever, but that poor lady.

Lock picking is an interesting skill, screwed around with it about 10 years ago when I was bored. Started with racking a lock, which wasn't easy (at first). Each lock brand is different however, they all have their own unique quarks. Haven't actually done it in many years now, but it got to the point where I could get most of my practice locks consistently within a few seconds. Once you pick it a few times they become much easier to pick. Best advice for folks would be to lube locks, much harder to pick a lubed lock as its very easy to bind the lock. Too little pressure and the pins will not set, too much and it binds/false set. That balance is difficult with a half decent lubed lock, some actually put pressure on the tumbler? Which makes it even harder as you need to use what feels like unreasonable force to properly set the lock even when dry.

From what I've been seeing with that one lock pick youtuber, something McNally, the most common locks seem to be picked by just smacking them with another lock your hand lol

I had to attempt a windows backup for reasons the other week, on win10. eventually i found a small button for "Go to Backup and Restore (Windows 7)" under all the cloud backup bullshit. I'm guessing that option is removed for win11. insanely infuriating. Ended up cloning the drive with third party software to solve my problem in the end.

I'm of opposite mind regarding lock picking in Starfield versus Skyrim. I actually like the lock picking in Starfield because it's an actual puzzle/minigame and not "let's create a test of your hand/eye coordination and patients." I know the Skyrim thing is supposed to be a simulation of real lockpicking... except it's NOT. You don't twist the pick. You use that to poke the individual cylinders in a lock's tumbler so they're in the correct spot when you use another tool to turn the lock.
@metaleggman18

Wouldn't the oldest locks just use a rake? I think that's what they're called. The locks in Skyrim, unless magically enhanced, would seemingly be incredibly unsophisticated, unless Dwarven.
@jackielinde7568
@jackielinde7568 Жыл бұрын
@@metaleggman18 You're thinking Skyrim locks that would be crafted like modern locks (cylinder with spring loaded pins), which is the same mistake Bethesda made in Skyrim's puzzle. Locks back then weren't that sophisticated. If they had any complexity where you needed a specific key, they were cut puzzle fashion. Otherwise, it was just a paddle on a shaft turning a wheel. Nothing to rake. My parents had a dinette set where the hutch and other furniture had the old style of locks (mostly decorative and only good for keeping kids and less than respectable dinner guests out). A stiff enough piece of wire could turn the lock.

@@jackielinde7568 I pick the pins not the locks. I treat them all individually. You can have different pin types in the same lock type. Except for procedure, knowing how many pins you can't really memorize locks. You can count on brands repeating themselves. You have to learn to see through your fingers is the best way I can explain it. Know what any output is telling you. Best way to start learning what the feedback is telling you is a see through lock. Look at the action and remember how it feels so you recognize it in other locks.

10:45 but thats stupid cuz jewelry or gold coins (my grandma had those and had to sell it to feed herself) these things are never worth what you pay for it and you wont be able to sell it, and when you sell it to goldsmith he will offer like 10% of what you payed for it so he can make a new piece of jewelry and charge a lot for it. Jewelry is to look pretty, thats all it is good for.
@metaleggman18
@metaleggman18 Жыл бұрын
That's not true of actual name brand jewelry, like Cartier or Tiffany's. Same with some vintage jewelry and watches. What Krista was mentioning was that back in the day you would get a nice piece of jewelry, since that's all there was, and it would be worth something if sold to a jeweler, since they wouldn't attempt to melt it down. This was at a time when precious metals had only value in and of themselves and as jewelry. Nowadays they're used in so many industrial products that you can melt down jewelry and sell it to China, or sold to custom jewelers whose pieces don't hold value.

@@metaleggman18 industrial application doesn't make a dent in the value of gold, and I am talking exclusively about jewelry. Like a bracelet or a necklace costs 1000 euros, but when you wanna cash it in, you either have to find someone who would pay full price for it or go to the goldsmith and he will offer like 300eur. This is off topic, just my thoughts for a longer time: So do you remember everyone talking abot crypto mining, pow mining like btc farms, or eth mining witg gpus, was taking too much electricity, it was bad for environment, co2 emissions and whatever they could think of? WHY is no one talking about AI "farms" which also use gpus, which also use so much electricity? Now it's all forgotten and gpus for AI don't do all the bad stuff crypto mining was doing? It's kinda annoying since back then wherever I turned to there was someone talking how crypto mining was bad for environment, but now gpus used for AI are great they don't use that same electricity and there's no bad things which came with crypto mining? And who is the main enabler in both cases? Nvidia!
@KafeinBE
@KafeinBE Жыл бұрын
It's easier to argue that AI is useful than to argue the same for cryptocurrency. The advantages of theoretically decentralized money are very abstract. If you haven't lived in places like Zimbabwe, Argentina or another country which had criminal monetary mismanagement (plus a good helping of external pressure), you probably don't realize that your central bank is fragile, ever-changing and subject to political pressure and that everything depends on it. Besides, now with proof of stake we're supposed to be past that stage.

Rossmann has no idea about calibrating an encoder. It is cheaper to buy uncalibrated encoders and calibrate them in-house, rather then buy the expensive calibrated encoder. No tech industry cares about making its calibration tools (software adn hardware) available to the public. Ususally you share tools with your customers, but only if needed. To Apple, encoder callibration must be a miniscule issue in a grand scope of all hardware they make and need to provide the support for.

???? Ryan... What are you smoking??? The US has always almost given all the Tax payer money to the Military. Since before the constitution the US Government's Tax payer dollars have always been and will always be primarily for our military. Now the second thing is the DOJ but that's a different pot of beans and that burden is split between the states and the feds. In fact when the Government isn't spending money on the military is when you need to be worried.
@marcogenovesi8570
@marcogenovesi8570 Жыл бұрын
"all the taxpayer money to the military"? FYI Defence has been below 30% of the total federal budget since around 1970s. And not because Defence spending itself has shrunk, but because other spending items have increased. You might want to look it up you are operating with 50+ year old info
@Dallen9
@Dallen9 Жыл бұрын
@@marcogenovesi8570 The amount the military has received has never "Decreased", ever. the percentage of the taxpayer dollar going to the military may have been drastically reduced but the amounts have never gone down. Yeah it's hyperbola to say Every tax dollar has been poured into the military but it doesn't change the fact the US has poured more into it's military than any Nation since the Greek Spartans. only Nation to rival the US is literally Israel, Everyone else is playing catch up even though the US has been slacking for almost half a century. We send weapons oh look the little guy wins why is that? the Issue is never about the US wasting money on the military it's everything else that isn't doing a damn thing that is the actual worry.
@marcogenovesi8570
@marcogenovesi8570 Жыл бұрын
@@Dallen9 In the OP you said "The US has always almost given all the Tax payer money to the Military." And I just reacted to that. If you look at the federal budgets graphs, the military is getting less than 30% since at least 1970 so that statement is just wrong. 30% isn't "almost all" by any stretch of the imagination. As for the "the amounts have never gone down." yes that is true and also what I already said: "And not because Defence spending itself has shrunk, but because other spending items have increased." As for what is "waste" of money it's a much bigger discussion and opinions may differ. But it's undeniable that even reducing a few percent the Defence spending you can get tens of billions that can make a big difference for pretty much any project.

@marcogenovesi8570
@marcogenovesi8570 Жыл бұрын
@@Dallen9 considering how you know nothing about the last 50 years I don't believe your claim about the 200 years before that either. The data I actually can look at stops somewhere around WW1 and all countries had inflated defense budgets in war times. In theory yes there are less federal organizations the more back we go (i.e. FBI was founded in 1908, NSA in 1952, ATF in 1972) but I have a strong suspicion that the "most taxes went to military" was true only in the first century at best. Either way that's irrelevant, the US at this point in time is not paying most of the tax money to defence, so Ryan's statement is correct and you are reaching to not admit you are wrong
