Hey Mr. Dauphin so glad to see you back on U-tube, you are a wealth of knowledge. I have learned so much watching your videos and being a member of your horse fly community. Keep them coming Sir.

Well that's awesome and appreciated. If you were a horse fly, please send me an email. I had to delete the plugin that ran the membership side of my website a few months ago, and by an unlucky coincidence, my webhost had a server meltdown and all of my prior emails were lost. That means I lost my emails and list of names of former subs. Contact me and we'll get you fixed back up as a Horse Fly! I remember the name and know you paid up in advance.

Hello at around 9 12 a very informative and professional video goes off the rails. I would stay away from that California stuff if I was you ( at least until you retire).

Great video on the physics! To be clear, when you refer to faster, you’re referring to the actual bit action and not the reaction and anticipation/ response from the horse?
@DanielDauphin
@DanielDauphin Жыл бұрын
Thanks, and yes. Though the reaction of the horse is often determined by how we understand and use what’s on the end of those reins. Many horses don’t appreciate fast bits combined with fast hands.

I have spent the whole day viewing many of your videos… love them! You are by far the best I’ve found to explain things I can understand. So my question would be on this topic is. For a 3year newbie with terribly fast an heavy hands that is aware but constantly has to remember to not snatch a rein. Would you suggest a O-ring with 1:1 an a slobber strap, or a broken leverage bit with long shanks an a pretty loose curb to give me time to not snatch an be softer. Keep them coming as I’ll keep bingeing!
@DanielDauphin
@DanielDauphin Жыл бұрын
Snaffle for sure and advise you to try to be aware/slow/deliberate, and to predominantly use one rein at a time. Broken mouth leverage bit would be unlikely to keep horses happy. Thanks for watching and the kind words.
@DanielDauphin
@DanielDauphin Жыл бұрын
And just to be clear, an o-ring (or any/all other snaffles) have no ratio at all. They aren’t levers in any way, which is an important distinction, because any sort of leverage bit is causing rotation of the mouthpiece, while no snaffle can cause rotation of the mouthpiece.

Is their any certain material you prefer for slobber straps? Is a soft rope better than say a soft leather strap? Or is it more of any cotton cloths line rope that’s laying around will do?
@DanielDauphin
@DanielDauphin Жыл бұрын
@@stephenheadings4789 so there are two parts of a snaffle bridle that people commonly refer to as slobber straps. If you are talking about the piece that connects the reins to the bit, most often used with mecate reins, then I'm on team leather. If you are talking about the piece that attaches under the chin, to both rings, and keeps the bit from going through the horse's mouth, then I don't really care too much. This is really a bit hobble by the way, but is often called a slobber strap/string. I probably use nylon chordage or paracord most commonly for bit hobbles because it lasts forever and doesn't actually play a role in function of the bridle. It's just there for safety and is important for that IMO.

how about no bit. IMHO if you can train a horse with modern training methods the bit is a useless tool. Bits were for old cowboys that did not know a damn thing about horses what they did know and could do is stay on the horse. Today we work and train the horses and a halter works just fine or a hackamore with no nose piece. We have not needed a but for any horse that we work with for the past 20 years, not one. If you need a bit for control then you don't have control the bit does. This tells me you suck with horses. We know now that good training makes a good soft partner horse in all cases no exceptions. If you need a bit to fix a 'problem" on so-called problem horses then you are not fixing or training a damn thing. Horses don't have problems humans create them. if you can not train the issues that another person created and you need a bit to make it work you need to start over because you are not training. After years of bits ever, I"m getting to the opinion that all invasive mouth bits are abusive it does not matter how light you think you are. Today we can tell who has great horsemanship or not, just by, if the horse is carrying a bit or not. We push cattle in the mountains and still no bit, hell rope halter most of the time. just an old-school abusive tool that was created back in the time when the cowboys just knew how to stay on the horse but not train the horse.

As you said, this is simply your opinion. Stating that everyone should have the abilities/skills of the top 1% of riders is a ridiculous position to take, IMHO. Likewise, the notion that every horse can be solved the same way is naive, idealistic, misguided, and blatantly false. Stating that doing other than you so virtuously think we should is "cruel and abusive" is beyond reasonable, makes anyone reading with an open mind instead want to mock your POV and, in fact, as those terms have legal consequences associated with them, that is a slanderous statement, or libel. I won't tolerate that BS here. Uneducated riders are always going to exist, because all beginners start there. Many never see the need to grow or improve and throwing stones at them will only make them defensive (an interesting tact to take in communicating with your own species after making the argument that you're an absolute expert at communicating with another species). Education of the rider is the solution to the problem you seem to be so passionate about. Which particular pressure points poor hands and poor timing are handling is not a virtuous argument to make. That's not my opinion. That's fact. As I noted in the other video of mine you commented on, there's a well funded and well organized opposition to all animal ownership out there, and statements like this one only fuel their fire and give them ammunition to use against us. This is foolish in the first degree and will not serve to help the cause of making life better for horses in any way, shape, or form. Inanimate objects are, by definition, not capable of being the problem. Fire isn't bad. Guns aren't bad. Bits aren't bad. You can use a brick to build a school, church, home, or hospital. You can use the same brick to crush someone's skull. Neither outcome is the fault of the brick.
