The reason he keeps moving on is because, yes the sake of humanity but, if he was ready to end his life then he would not keep killing Titans and it would not matter to him anymore that people die. He does care because like in the OVA (if you watched it) he is so shocked thatching many people are dead and when he sees his friends die he gets mad. He does care it's just not surprising anymore. He moves on because there is nothing you can do about death. Even though everything that has happened to him is sad he keeps going that's what I love about him the most.
