In this week's insightful conversation, I had the immense pleasure of sitting down with the extraordinary Levi Roots. Join us as we delve deep into Levi's remarkable life journey - a tale of resilience, transformation, and purpose.
Levi shares his poignant experience of relocating from Jamaica to Brixton at the tender age of 11, leaving behind his cherished grandmother. We'll walk alongside him through the formative years he spent in jail, and discover the incredible role music and the South London soundsystem culture played in shaping his identity.
One of the pivotal moments in Levi's life comes alive as he recounts the unforgettable instance of singing "Happy Birthday Mr. President" before thousands in Brixton, with none other than Nelson Mandela present - an event that ignited his sense of purpose and set him on a transformative path.
From his groundbreaking success on Dragons' Den to his invaluable insights on achieving greatness, Levi Roots opens up about his journey and shares lessons that resonate deeply with those seeking inspiration, entrepreneurship, and meaningful accomplishment.
Thank you for joining us on this episode of "Success Is Not Normal." Stay tuned for more remarkable stories that remind us all that success is truly an extraordinary journey.

Levi your story runs parallel with mine I came to this Country 2 months before my 11th birthday grew up with my Grandma I never got to see her before she passed this wonderful lady raised me from 8 months until I was almost 11 years I didn't know my father because he left a month before I was born and he died when I was 9 years before I was able to come to England to join my older siblings I being the youngest of 10. All these occurances has had a detrimental effect on my mental health issues such as feelings of abandonment and attachment. I didn't go down the route of criminalty indeed I pursued a career in law like my father however I still suffer from mental health issues especially now am retired with a lot of time to reflect am a female so that may have been the reason coupled with the fact that I did not accept what my teachers said of me that I couldn't be what I wanted to be because I was too ambitious. When I was told by my English teacher that I couldn't be a journalist because I couldn't spell my thoughts were that it was her job as my teacher to teach me and help me to achieve my goal not to discourage me. I did not become a journalist but went one better when I secured my articalship I had great pleasure in returning to school to inform her of my achievement you can imagine the look on her face she didn't even have the decency to congratulation me. My Grandma was a strong positive woman who taught me to believe in myself always telling me that I could be whatever I wanted to be the fact that I was 15 years of age when she passed and was not able to go to her funeral and have closure still affect my mental health today

Thank you for sharing such a personal and profound story. The strength and resilience you've demonstrated, despite the challenges and naysayers, is truly commendable. Your grandma's teachings clearly played a pivotal role in shaping your determination and self-belief. It's important for us to recognise and applaud individuals like you who've defied odds, broken barriers, and turned adversities into stepping stones. Your story is a testament to the fact that one should never let anyone define or limit their potential. Sending warmth and respect your way, and hope you continue to find healing and peace.

You have already ivercome because you proved your teacher to be a liar. I too wanted to be a journalist. Never made it but I am an award winning writer. If you know your mental health triggers you can avoid them. Live your best life you are a success.

Levi your story is very piongnant one of self discovery in a NEW WORLD, your honesty is REAL...with heart felt facts that truly affected your life. Prison was a culture shock to your MENTAL system...Under lock & key like a caged animal. You do have a story to tell the YOUTHS of this present generation, of a HARSH reality existence that gave you a insensitive to make BETTERMENT of yourself & also your late BELOVED grandma to be PROUD of your BREAKTHROUGH into a media icon. All your wealth doesn't take away your SAD memories of your early days here in GB. You felt ALONE & missed your right arm of emotional well being, grandma, her LOVE sustaied you, & was your lifeline. Today you are a BRAND & name nuh fi get wey di FAME and FORTUNE come from...dough GB 🇬🇧🇬🇧

I used to see Levi singjaying on Coxsone Outernational sound system back in the early 80s (Lloyd lives about half a mile from me in South London and see him from time to time) and still have many of his SCOM and Blacker Dread 12"s!

Wow, brilliant interview. So inspirational….brought back so many memories….remembering my older brothers, who are now in their 60s…the racist names they were called by some of their school teachers….the battles my Jamaican parents had with the UK school system…the support of the church and the social bullets my brothers dodged to become contributing citizens and great fathers and husbands. Can’t wait to see the movie. Blessings to both of you.

I had the same experience as a child Irish parents came in the mid 50s left with granny's in Ireland sent for when they got set up in England experienced same racism I remember seeing cardboard in the windows saying no coloureds no Irish no dogs getting called dirty Irish duckeggs Shock because I never seen children outside in nappies no shoes really dirty in Ireland my mom always washed her doorstep and windows washed and curtains every week outside wall painted red and we were the dirty Irish duck eggs 😅 we the Irish and west Indian people stuck together we all felt the predudice and had many battles on the streets with the tormentors resonate with everything he said even the Faith and mothers cooking big pots of food so anyone would eat who visited very similar culture lifelong friendships were forged from childhood cultures shared same memories heartbreaking being taken away from the elders who half reared us hated it never really got over it the break in bonding with the parents and pining for your grannies parents were like strangers for first tfew years a lot of us experienced issues of fear of intimacy in adult relationships due to this fracture in relationships as kids hated it here wanted to go home really really resonate with this conversation and yeh remember the reggae dance halls good old days

Great interview, however I have to point out that 2013 Levi was asked by the ASB team to help in a training session with the kids on the estate where he lived. At the last minute he pulled out with no explanation to a cooking show for two white boys on TV. Still I wish him success and peace

Sadly I heard that too. I hope they (the system) don’t lift him up and then tear him down in his later years. Like they have done to many. He has to be careful, karma is real.
