I like to think that Gobul are like eels, we didnt know where eels came from for the longest time because they dont develop sexual organs until they are pretty big and they travel long distances to a seemingly random part of the ocean to breed. For a while we didnt even know different life stages of eels were the same species.

Something not talked about in the video is Gobul's neurotoxin spikes on the tail, used as a form of defense. From memory it only used the tail swipe on land, as the tail is only mobile on the horizontal axis, and cannot be used as a stingray dart underwater (vertical motion).
@erichdavis2897
@erichdavis2897 Жыл бұрын
Playing 3u right now, it does in fact use the swipe underwatter, but it moves horizontal as normal and is incredibly rarely used. Maybe every 3 fights you get to see it.

if you're not seeing that attack, it could easily be do to positioning and luck. moves sets often have a couple options at most angles in general but underwater is in 3 dimensions so there are more variables in pairing a move with targeting behavior of the AI.

Gobul was my favorite fight back in Tri, but mainly because the broken Pecos Hammer explosion would repeatedly launch it into the sky without fail. It’s attacks were always creative and fun to watch. I feel like I might be one of few people just loved the fight. I hope Gobul and underwater combat return someday. Nibelsnarf is good but fairly sluggish and predictable by comparison.

i really hope underwater combat comes back, hopefully with a beautiful 5th gen style overhaul. they've made it clear, in interviews during MHW's news cycle, that they want to give underwater combat another try. it was originally an idea for MHW, they bring up the wildspire wastes in that interview and there's the lagiacrus demo footage that may have been a map with it in mind but that was probably the stage where it was cut but lagi wasn't yet. my theory is that 7th gen will give it a try, my reasoning is that odd gens seams to be the times for bigger risks like 3rd's first attempt at underwater combat and MHW's reworks/open maps. 2nd and 4th gen did add weapons but those are move sets for a player, not entire game altering mechanics. 6th gen will likely be a time to look at what 5th gen did well and expand on it; more map interactions, more skeletons being brought into 5th gen's engine, more of the unique turf war animations while making the AI behave like MHW post turf war, and so on. it'll be interesting what they'll do with some weapons like HH which was so different between both 5th gen games, please let IG keep powder vortex, sure make its damage between the Rise update 5's nuke rampage deco and normal but let it behave like MHW where monsters can't break them to ruin powder vortex. another option for IG is just admitting it's mid air short range bow already and letting the 2 be closer in damage since mid range and mid air darting around with stamina management are the same almost and arguably you have to be more careful with where you land with IG anyway, while bow is always further away so attacks take longer to reach you.

I've been excited for this one! Still only halfway through. But I can't help but say 2 things. You were smart to talk about the myth at the start about gobul adults. While I know you are right. I still want to believe otherwise. The reason is cause flounders have this in real life. A single species of flounder can be found in multiple different locations in the world but grow different depending on their location. And the difference is massive. From something the size of a bluegill, so hand sized. To the size of a person. I always figured that's where the mh team got the idea. Secondly, you call them large mouth leviathans. I always saw them as flat bellied leviathans. Not that it means anything. But it's just fun to say. Love the vids and keep them up!! They literally make my day every time they come out! ❤❤

I did initially want to write something similar, but I think Gobul is much more limited by prey and how far they're willing to dive. Jungle rivers like the congo can be 2000m deep, but if the epioth etc aren't going down there (and they don't seem to be deep divers) there's not much reason for gobul to do so as far as we know.
@danielwilson217

@unnaturalhistorychannel ya, I think you are right. I guess I believed it cause it just sounded fun. Mh design is fun cause of the outlandish becoming grounded. The more far out the idea successfully done is some of the best designs. Gore is a prime example here. I would still like this myth to become true one day, though. For the sole reason of entertaining the community and having a fun lore challenge!! Edit: oh!! It would also conform that the flood forest is connected to the ocean, explaining lagi and ludroth being there. Not that they themselves don't conform that.

I find it interesting how Nibelsnarf (NIBBLE, not "nye-bul") does start out life in the water as a juvenile and uses its gills as actual gills. Given how its bottom colourization is apparently meant to act as a warning to predators, it could be that this is a warning early in its life in the desert oases but is retained even into adulthood despite there being few true predators of Nibelsnarf by that point.

I wonder if Gobul and Nibelsnarf are some of the most basal leviathans. They might show how leviathans branched off from piscine wyverns. Maybe the first leviathan was a piscine wyvern that waited in shallow banks to overcome the low tide and eat anything that got caught into them before evolving to traverse the land with modified limbs that would later become fins?

@@rac1equalsbestgame853 That’s also a good one. Ludroth I do think is where the general more common leviathan body plan comes from The reason I went with the Megamouth leviathans as the basal choice is because they look the most primitive and they look like they are fish that just crawled out of the sea Yours is still a likely choice as well
@Nrex117
@Nrex117 Жыл бұрын
While they may appear primitive I feel like they may actually be a case of being hyper specialized to their particular way of life and by extension more derived than other Leviathans. I imagine species such as Ludroth or Lagiacrus might be better representatives of “primitive” leviathans.
@rac1equalsbestgame853
@rac1equalsbestgame853 Жыл бұрын
@@TsulaAngenati2292 I feel they might be a case of hyperspecialization to likely ancestrally burrowing like Niblesnarf and since burrowers tend to be good swimmers, the ancestors of Gobul got even more hyperspecialized into the muds of bracky water. Their low intelligence might come from if you spend most of your life waiting for something to pass by and snap at it energy conservation is key, especially for Gobul who also has to hold his breath for at least hours at a time. And when it comes to sedentary lifestyles like that the brain consumes a lot of energy and oxigen and you're barely using it anyways so shrink it

It is unknown if there is more abundant resources in the deep MH sea, but it is entirely possible that the Adult Ghobul myth isn't myth. Given how Nakarkos is a cephalopod, a deep-sea Ghobul could predate upon the squid lings, or even Ceadeus calfs. Lagiacrus could even hunt younger Ghobul in shallow or deeper water. Nibble does eat very similarly to Tuna, and the gills that Nibble have could support the Ocean Desert hypothesis

Really interesting discussion on these two, always been a big sucker for them and hope that they return one day. A small detail I always sort of head cannoned with Nibbelsnarf's eye placement is that it's top of it's head is to detect potential aerial predators while relying mostly on detecting vibrations when searching for prey. One thing I'm curious about your thoughts on is how a lot of people tend to consider Nibbelsnarf an amphibian as opposed to a derived reptile and similarly for Gobul to also be an amphibian or even a fish.

I seriously don’t think the bigmouth levyathans are levyathans at all, thay look more like weird early tetrapod analogs, gobul has way too many vestigial fingers similar to basal stegocephalians instead of the standard four or five standard to most derived tetrapods in MH, as well as both nibble and gobul having straight necks, in our world, all derived tetrapods have S shaped necks even though some species have to short necks for this to be clearly seen, but amphibians and fish have straight necks, and it seems that that is also the case with the rigid hunched backs and masive heads of most amphibians in monster hunter, i would argue that the gulper levyathsns are actualy the equivalent of basal stegocephalians like ichthyostega and acanthostega in monster hunter, being relics from when the ancestors of the 4 limbed animals first came to land

oh hell yeah, i'd have loved a coral highlands cave gobul. especially if it had some agnaktor elements of it hiding in the sealing or walls to pop out. in the lagiacrus demo, there was a fair bit of low light areas being shown off so having more of that on multiple maps with different ambush predictors would have been so cool. one of my biggest hopes for MH6 would be it staying in the new world, or somehow having both new and old but the new world still has another half of it that's unexplored. in an interview, back in MHW's later news cycle, a question was asked about the discrepancies between the in game world map, that shows where locations are relative to each other, and the map in your third/final base game hunter quarters. they answered that the map in game is only half of the new world so there is plenty of room for more amazingly unique maps with MHW's very cool designs. thse could also use elements from the lagi demo, not even using the unseen parts of the continent because there's a section north of the anceint forest that looks like deeper woods and rivers.

this is amazing! i did a deep dive on nibelsnarf a few weels ago ill post my summary below to see what you guys think! one of my favourite monsters from the third generation of monster Hunter. I think the ecology of this monster is very interesting as it has no real analogue in the real world. One of the most interesting parts of 'snarf that I don't see people discussing is the fact that Nibelsnarf is not a subterranean monster, it doesn't dig under the ground and live in underground burrows, it simply seems to travel along the loose top soil substrate of the dunes. This is very interesting as it affects Nibelsnarfs wider ecology. Some evidence for this is when Nibelsnarf is on low health, instead of burrowing straight under ground like Diablos or duramboros, snarf heaves itself along the sandy plains to get to the underground canyons it hides in when in danger or during the heat of the day. Also It's limbs are actually quite poorly adapted for digging heavy compacted substrate, such as that found deep underground, therefore we can conclude Nibelsnarf instead burrows into the loose topsoil probably not often digging much deeper than 10 metres underground. So how does this affect its ecology? Well this is actually beneficial to Nibelsnarf as it means it will likely come into less contact with the many subterranean monsters of the deserts of the old world. One monster is Diablos, which, if Nibelsnarf dug deeper, may be a danger to Nibelsnarf as it is highly territorial, especially of its deep burrows. So there you go that may be something new you didn't know about the land whale! What do you like about nibelsnarfs design and ecology? Happy hunting! Im sure a lot of this is disproved after this video, but i tried, also i found out about the sand boa after this, and i talked about it on my discord, but i cant be bothered to post the thread.

Two things: One: do you think it’s possible that Nibelsnarf might not necessarily LIVE in the Sandy Plains, but rather in the rock formations surrounding them? Given that it generally leaves its top exposed during the fight, and it sleeps the same way, is it possible that it may only forage in the Sandy Plains and then nest in the cliffs and caves? Two: next potential video could just be you ripping Magnamalo (a.k.a. Coldsteel the Fanged Wyvern) apart while also trying to give it SOMETHING that isn’t edgelord cringe

On the subject of armor, Gobul’s armor is easily the best to use when fighting the legendary Ceadeus as it gives a good bonus to eating skills and more importantly, greatly increases swimming speed. This makes it almost a necessity when fighting the big whale boi

I think the fact that gobul can deliberately enhance the light of its lure to create a flash bang means its lure probably isn't created by a symbiotic relationship, but is instead homegrown

I actually liked Gobul. The armor was cool. The weapons were cool, a relatively easy set of paralysis weapons to get in Tri. A fun fight. One of the very few fun things about water combat. The tail was a bitch to cut off though. I liked Nibelsnarf too with it's military-themed weapons and gear, but I kind of got tired of him after like 3 games with him.

I've actually just started playing 3U so I'm really eager to meet these guys. Do you think a Manta sleep mask will protect me from Gobul's lure? Also Andanglers from the Coral Highlands are baby Gobul, try changing my mind :P

I think a mudskipper monster like this could be cool like mix a mudskipper and a gulper eel big mouth with strong fins that can propel itself forward at high speeds and bite you.

He's already mentioned Magnamalo at the very least in a previous video. IIRC the opinion was that its not a strong design, too impractical but specifics escape me.

I think he commented on Malfestio in the Seregios video, saying that the manner in which Seregios uses its talons makes it appear more convincingly owl-like than Malfestio, who more closely resembles an owl visually.

I remember Gobul as my second wall in Tri, after Barroth. He was significantly easier in 3U but I do remember G rank giving me and my brothers trouble for a while. Its a shame Green Narga's Awaken Weapons end up outclassing his because Paralysis was a lot of fun to use online in 3 Ultimate, but with the God Charm it became so easy to get Awakening his usefulness fell off as soon as Green Narga was huntable. I imagine they'd have to make him noticeably bigger in new games, I remember a big issue trying to fight him on Land was that he'd inflate and take up a ton of the zone. It was a challenge moving around him to get to softer parts. It would be nice to have fishable monsters again, although a bit of a revamp on bait would be in order so it wasn't so easy to do (maybe make Frogs Account Items, or that you have to use ParaToads instead so you only get one or two chances)

Hi UHC. Just a vid idea. Locals and what seasons could look like with them? So the flooded Forrest with a wet and dry season. While this map doesn't exist, a snow map that has a summer. An area that has an iced over lake for big monsters like gammath that in summer is an underwater fight area. Do deserts have seasons? Does the rotten vale or coral highlands have seasons? I think this would be an amazing topic if you wanted a breather from monsters alone.

A partially unfrozen Frozen Seaway sounds so fun, like maybe some ice becomes shallow water zones in "summer" and the extra Frozen Seaway we get is the "Winter" season Or a Sandy Plains with only one wallows religiously maintained by an agressive Barroth That would be amazing

These giant Jaws gotta be huge deterrents for other predators shouldn't they? A nibelsnarf could easily fit in the head of a deviljho or glavenus into their own maw for example.

Hm, I haven't been able to get my hands on some of the older games but you brought up an interesting topic. Animals like lions, wolves, owls, cattle, normal fish, turtles, birds, etc exist in Monster Hunter. How does the "real" caste of animals coexist with Monster Hunter's unique and certainly more dominant species of creatures if the New World's lack of real animals is anything to go by. Would they just be forced down into lower niches or would there be a chance of fighting back?

To me Gobul feels like it has too many things. I can understand how the mouth, lure (that doubles as a flashbang) and inflatable belly work together but the paralyzing tail and the spikes on the back made it feel like too much.

Spikes and tail I can see for there as a defensive measure. He is basicly a giangantic stone fish mixed with any other ground dwelling ambush predator. Atleast is not that much what Magnamolo has on him.
