This series is definitely one of my top 10 as well. I watched the show before I knew they were books - and now that I'm reading the books, I'm finding that the show and book are the closest as I've ever seen in an adaptation, which is awesome.

Solid review! I love the line you chose to describe Miller's character. It really does paint an image of guy who has been through some stressful experiences and sees the irony in life. This review is reminding me of how much I enjoyed that book. I thought Miller and Holden were so realistic, like I could run into those guys at a gas station (space station?) or something. I also enjoyed the space opera setting and philosophical banter. There were some bizarre developments, and I felt less connected to some of the side characters. I'll be curious to hear your thoughts as you continue!

I've tried twice to get into the TV show The Expanse. Both times I've failed and bailed after about 20 minutes. I'll try again one of these days but I'm also going to try reading Liviathan Waks, the book. You mention that when the TV series is over, you'll still have the pages of the books for the characters that you love. I'm on record as predicting that after the show is over, DVDs, or whatever video media still is viable and popular, will be produced and sold.

The antagonist of the expanse is human nature. The good and bad that exists in all of us. People do bad things for what they think are good reasons. People do good things for bad reasons. And so on. The expanse is built in nuance and the idea that no one is truly good or truly bad, but that the world is built up of shades of grey... "I learnt a while ago that the hardest part of this game is not to fight but to figure out who the enemy really is." I actually hate the stereotypical antagonist in stories and much of modern media. I far prefer the more thoughtful shades of grey.
