@Ryan Rafter not as dramatically reduced as it seems. The extra distance is because almost the same butane is being shot out at a higher speed because it has to go through a smaller space before it gets to the distance for the right mix with oxygen to sustain its ignition. Note the difference in color; it's a smaller but higher energy flame now. Before it was a bigger lower energy flame.
@bajansamurai4 жыл бұрын
@@888edu4U yup. "To Nerf" has been a gamer term for a while meaning to lessen or completely remove something's effectiveness (in those cases, reducing one or more of a playable character or object's abilities with the introduction of something else; or an outright change to the character or object that lowers or removes an ability). I always figured it correlated with a Nerf gun being a toy gun hence not destructive.

Can't decide what I like best about this guys videos; the original content, the clear demonstration and explanation of the subject, or the sometimes bonus observations he makes about the subject. In this case the plasma settling at the point where the laminar flow turns turbulent. Gives ya food for thought. I wonder if the flame causes turbulence by generating heat. Or does the inevitable turbulence cause the air/fuel conditions for the flame to occur? See? food for thought. Awesome video as usual. Getting BETTER over time!

Magicians watching this: “Here’s an idea to fool Penn and Teller!”
@jeffo93964 жыл бұрын
Penn and Teller get fooled more than they should, but I doubt a cocktail party trick involving a lighter would fool them. lol
@DavidTJames-yq9dr4 жыл бұрын
@@jeffo9396 it is all in the presentation. I wonder if you can add multiple flame sources, and play with the angles to create an effect that does not look like a party trick. Also fuel sources that alternate or move thru a spectrum could add some flare (punny) and colour to the illusion. I think I will try this for my weekend side project. The remaining portion would be how it is presented to the audience. A bit of stage-show and abracadabra - Magic.... SCIENCE!!
@jeffo93964 жыл бұрын
@@DavidTJames-yq9dr If the presentation is done cleverly and properly, then it certainly has the potential to fool P&T. It just wouldn't fool them if you show them a floating flame and they know that it's a floating flame. Someone did a levitation trick on P&T's Fool Us a few years back, and they actually got fooled. I remember Penn saying something like, "There's only so many ways that you can levitate an object"... yet, the way that the performer did the trick was unique to them, so it fooled them. So yes, if a basic trick is performed in a clever enough way, then the end result would be very impressive and appear to be like a brand-new trick.
@DavidTJames-yq9dr4 жыл бұрын
@@jeffo9396 i am def not that clever, but I am gonna google that P&T episode and see if I can dissect the presentation layer. Thanks!

Suggestion: when the flame is floating it is rather unstable i.e. it extinguisher rather easily. at some distance to the flame try clapping your hand hard but make sure you dont blow it out by the gust you are creating. the hard clapping sound alone should extinguish the flame. I came across this phenomenon a long time ago during my childhood when I was playing around with some sort of Bunsen burner after I've romoved the top part of it. Have fun!
