LEVITATING MOON LAMP (A FUTURE Classic)

I found out about these from a Facebook ad from Amazon and my interest was immediately captured. These, using electromagnetism effectively create an anti gravity effect like Star Trek. I'm a huge Trekkie. Been a Trekkie essentially my entire life as I became interested in Star Trek at age 5 in 1990 during TNG's 4th season. In fact I am actually watching DS9 for the first time, as playing Star Trek Online for the past 7 years with all the references to the Dominion War, I got Paramount+ and currently watching season 1. I just finished the episode where Sisco punches Q square in the jaw. And of course Q says "Picard never hit me." And Sisco replies with one of the funniest comebacks "I'm not Picard." I rolled with that one 🤣.

It's tough to increase the clearance significantly, given how the levitation on these works. You can, in principle, replace a solid base with a ring, and then you can adjust the placement. E,g, you can have the ring around the equator of the Moon with about half an inch between the ring and the sphere, which might be a more interesting effect, depending on what exactly you're looking for. For this kind of table-top arrangement, though, this is probably pretty close to the limit. Like the video's author said, there are some that float a little higher, but if you're looking for something that floats, like, a foot above the desk, that's going to require a magnet that'll be wiping credit cards if you get too close.

It'll float without the light being on yes, but still needs to be connected to power. If you kill the power the magnet will stick to the base.

I have my own powerful magnets and tried to do something like this, but everything I try slides off to one side so the + and - pulls attract. I kind of gave up until I can find out how to do this for real.

There's actually a neat little theorem in electrodynamics that you can't achieve stable levitation with permanent magnets alone. You need either type II superconducting magnets that can lock flux, a secondary source of stability, or rely on induction. For the superconductors, unfortunately, you need extremely low temperatures. For the type of stuff you can reasonably get, you'll need liquid nitrogen cooling, so not practical at all. (But there are some cool videos. Search for superconductor levitation.) For other sources of stability, the coolest option is gyroscopic stability. There are some toys out there that's basically a magnetic base and a spinning top that has a magnet in it. Gyroscopic effect prevents the top from flipping over, which allows the top to hover over the base until it slows down from air resistance. It's neat, but also not the best approach for something like this Moon globe. (It's easy to make your own levitating top, though. Search for some videos! Works best with ring-shaped magnets from speakers.) That leaves inductive levitation as a practical solution for a lamp. This requires a coil in the base that you feed an alternating current into and a conductive ring or disk in the levitating object that will carry induced current. With the correct geometry of the coil and the conducting core, the levitation is stable within a small deviation from equilibrium. (That's why finding the sweet spot is a bit finicky when you're setting the lamp up.) As a bonus, you can tap the induced current with a rectifier to power a simple circuit with some LED lights, which is probably exactly what this levitating Moon is doing, since the light doesn't seem to require a charger. It's not terribly hard to build your own, but it does require a little bit of an experience of working with circuits. I think I've seen some DIY kits, though, so if you have an interest, do search for these.
