Man, Levy is such an amazing guy. You can see his passion for Chess just from listening to him talk. You can notice there's even some frustration in him for not being a GM and not having made it further in the sport, but honestly, what Levy is doing for Chess is much more than any old super top player could ever hope to achieve. He has a Channel with a million subscribers in a relatively niche topic, spreading his love for the game into countless people whilst creating actual wholesome, fun and instructive content. I have nothing but admiration for this man.

This interview highlights to me a lot of things that up to this point I didn't know about Levy (probably because I stay away from Twitter). Having heard about the coaching of girls in chess and how he stands up for what he feels is right just makes me respect him more as a person rather than just as a skilled player. Admittedly, I have not followed this channel for very long but I am using it to help me get into Chess which is why a lot of this is relatively new to me.

Interestingly, he doesn’t mention the huge subscriber engagement as a big part of the success. I think that the series he plays with subscribers (how to play openings, Guess the ELO) and uploading those sessions to KZbin has helped to keep comments and likes up, made people feel closer to the subscriber community and encouraged subscription, and fluffed the algorithm.

Thank you for being so outspoken for women in chess. You have no idea what kind of difference it makes to have someone with such a large platform advocate for what's really the bare minimum, but is still not being reached. Even if it's just hearing she/her pronouns being used in super gm recaps, or hearing stories of Judit Polgar or Hou Yifan being shared, having a space in the chess world that welcomes women is so encouraging to learn and improve. Girls really do participate more when they're not alone with men in a class or group of chess players. Even if it's just one friend, in my experience that's enough to get multiple other women involved, and you've discussed before how the participation gap is what causes the rating gap at the top levels (a lot of boys learn to play, only a few become super gms; few girls learn to play, even less become super gms). We can fix this, and I hope you know how appreciated your impact is

This is a good interview. I didn’t know much at all about the chess world before January of this year. What I got from this interview is that while the game of chess may be easy to get into, the world of chess can be uptight and stiff to a newcomer who just wants to play and learn without having aspirations of becoming some super GM. Gotham is the shit talker at the family function who says the things no one else wants to say, and he gets away with it because he’s damn good at chess. Things people like to see when everything a community are a friendly inviting face and some good old fashioned drama. Gotham provides both, in addition to his awesome videos that teach complete novices the basics of chess. In that way, he really is a gateway to the community for many of us. I hope he gets recognized as such soon

51:40, that was a thriller and was when i discovered Hikaru. I will always remember the clip of Nakamura reacting to Magnus finding a "dirty move against Ding Liren in the semi's". Not to mention all in that same week I discovered Chess on Twitch, and discovered Agadmator, Levy, and Anna Rudolf. And at the same time to my delight actually saw women that were stronger chess players than me(I knew it was possible but despite the fact a woman taught me the game she was the only one I ever lost to at that point but that was when I was 5 year old and she was my teacher). But to see both seeming regular males and females playing the gaming in a competitive yet positive environment(along with seeing Hikaru's arrows and calculations) were what brought me back into the chess world. And longer saw chess as a way Paul Morphy described it in his later years: "a man who can play chess is the sign of a gentleman, a man who can play chess well is a sign of a wasted life"). It was a combination of all these things that made me fall in love with the game have been in love with ever since(despite the fact that I would get frustrated and bang on furniture or swear in foreign languages after suffering tough losses. The rules of Chess haven't changed to much in the past 100 years, but the community and support of it what is drawing more and more people back into the game. Thank You all of the Chess Content Creators❤
