Lew is a tenor saxophone jazz virtuoso who exudes robustly poignant beauty; the totality of which applaudably parallels his flautistic artistry. He is one of my sax/flute inspirations and influences. I am persuaded to assert and affirm that many of the best exponents of Jazz Flute are/were saxophonists: Frank Wess, Eric Dixon, Jerome Richardson, Herbie Mann, Bobby Jaspar, Phil Bodner, Eric Dolphy, Yusef Lateef, Buddy Colette, Bud Shank, Joe Farrell, Eddie Daniels, David Newman, James Spalding, Kenneth Goldberg, Jerome Najee Rasheed, Paula Altherton, James Carter, Tubby Hayes .... They are/were equally as proficient on Flutes as on saxophones. Lew has a style and sound of his own, especially on the flute - masculinely romantic. P.S.: His step daughter used to be a classically trained flautista; what's become of her, I often wonder? Does she still play the flute? Maybe the question is for Toshiko Akiyoshi (sp), her mother, and jazz pianist supreme. Tks. for posting!
