Mr.Moulton gives a interesting biographical scetch on Lewis!

I have known more than one man of far better than average intellect that had a stumbling block in initiating their writing. Perhaps Jefferson overlooked this in Lewis, while basking in the glow of his intellect. And the very strenuous nature of their expedition of pushing boats and men up river against the current had to lead to nights of eating then collapse without writing anything. We see a similar system of journal keeping with Marcy and Dr. Parker when they crossed the plains almost 50 years later.

I believe Lewis DID commit suicide. All things point to it. Depression, people that knew him since Day 1 like Clark, like the President of the U.S., etc. Anyways, opinions vary on this and they ALWAYS WILL. Take care Brettany

It is unreasonable to think that the leader of the trip can write all the details, not possible. If the writing was so necessary a 'scribe' should have been taken on this expedition. Lewis could have dictated to the scribe and also kept his own journal. I challenge anyone today who thinks they can run such a strenuous mission & still capture all the writing, not possible; this was a major mistake of undertaking such a journey. I don't buy all this nonsense about his melancholy, drinking or other distractions. Although with Clark, Lewis was leader & had the responsibility for the trek. I know for myself I would never undertake such a responsibility w/o having the support of a scribe, this was not two guys on a trip, this was 33 or more men so there are major interactions that must be dealt with everyday!
