Toto was a racer himself, admittedly he realized early that he was never as naturally gifted to move into Formula 1. But he has great business acumen with his experience on the side. So like he said, he was able to combine the two and being the best 'enabler' in the Paddock. He summarized that his job was simply being able to put the best available 'jockey' to the right 'horse'. What a lot of people didn't know was that Toto was related to Niki Lauda, as he was Niki's ex- 'Half Cousin'. He knew the opportunity was right to have both together to purchase 40% of the F-1 team from Mercedes AMG back in 2012. As they couldn't deliver the results on the budget constraints having answered to the shareholders of the Daimler Group. So that injection of budget helped and also Lewis bringing in fresh ideas to the team. As well when you see the Mercedes AMG Petronas F-1 Team, everyone is team focused. Everyone on the team has no egos. Also similar to Mclaren, they attract many of the best Universities talents with work programs so it will be win-win for everyone. Those kind of teamwork and easy going flows are not usual in this kind of business. Every team video is exactly that, they are open in their conversations. So much so that they are not afraid to give some minor team secrets away, which you will never see in other teams.

Hearing Toto speak makes you realise exactly why Mercedes have been so successful in F1. He has a leader mentality and his way of thinking is bang on the money. Having the right people in the right places, mutual respect and understanding that no matter how close you are with the team and your driver, everyone needs space and time to reflect before decisions are made.

And people have the goddamn nerve to talk about the car performance while always neglecting to give Lewis credit for his contributions to the car's performance. Here we have Toto himself saying they had to follow Lewis down a setup/development path that was counter to what the team thought, but in the end Lewis knew best.

Thank you. This is so key. Years ago when Hamilton was at McLaren someone on a forum who claimed to have insider info said Hamilton was known for being able to set up his car. This was of course shot-down/ ignored. And now we have the evidence. So after he left McLaren slipped even further down while Mercedes went up. That can’t be just a coincidence. But Haters will be Haters.
@alikaty2k7
@alikaty2k7 3 жыл бұрын
@@velocgee2874 Lewis has always been meticulous in setting up his car. I remember him going into detail about getting them to build custom brake master cylinders @ McLaren (he had complaints about the feel & bite, they said tell us what you need & we can build it). Mercedes could have gone conservative this year but according to the team, Lewis felt that last year's car's performance was limited through the slow corners by understeer. He wanted to counter that by being able to rotate the car more from the rear. That of course leads to oversteer & while Lewis doesn't have any issues managing a tail happy car, once the Pirellis start to slide, they overheat & grain. Mercedes solved this problem by reworking the entire rear suspension to free up the path of airflow from the inner face of the rear tires to the diffuser. This made the diffuser more efficient, increasing downforce & crucially, shifting the aero balance to the rear. So now the tires won't slide & overheat so easy when Lewis & Valtteri are flinging the cars around. That's a development that suits their style of driving. If a driver like Vettel (as good as he is) sat in the same Mercedes, he probably wouldn't like it (proven at Ferrari: the cars are inherently oversteery but Charles hasn't found them nearly as prone to spin as Seb). It's a lazy & ill-informed argument to suggest Lewis (or any of them) just shows up & drives ready made fast cars.

@@humbertosouza9013 Lewis talked about pushing for the development in an audio interview with Jonathan Noble on the Motorsport.com/Autosport network. The title is "The hidden side of what's made Hamilton so good". James Allison confirmed it on the Sky broadcast in an interview after the Turkish GP... I don't know if that's copied anywhere, but Mark Hughes confirms those points in an article over at Motorsport Magazine (title: "MPH: Hamilton's slick strategy - 'He just knows what to do'.") There's also another great article by Noble with Brembo engineers where they go into detail about just how particular all the greats are (they talk to engineers that worked with Senna, Schumacher, Villenueve, Prost, Vettel, Alonso & Hamilton. Title: The real differences: Hamilton vs Senna vs Schumacher vs Alonso). Senna was one of the first who understood the importance of staying on top of the evolving tech & it was he who pioneered the use of smaller master cylinders to improve braking performance (a trick Lewis would pick up @ Mclaren). Schumi optimized every single aspect of his braking systems & liked a short, responsive pedal. Vettel is very particular about the carbon compounds in the friction materials (apparently he's the only driver who's that picky). Alonso's feel is so great the engineers liken it to him having "natural ABS". Hamilton's braking engineers say the only limit he knows is the maximum brake temperature, but that he also has a way of driving beyond any physical limit. ALL of them are very particular (some being more meticulous than others) about ALL aspects of their braking systems, as well as the rest of the systems on the cars they drive. The cars are built specifically for them. Anybody who acts like these cars are ready made is an idiot.

They probably would not have gotten along so well had it not been for NIkki Lauda's senority wisdom and straight shooting nature. It was Nikki that kept all the roosters in check, especially during their most success and yet turbulent time with Nico Rosberg and Lewis in contention. Nikki was the sounding board for the team and all its players. His straight shooting brutally honest demeanor made a team who's ethics were not about antics and emotional rift raft, but rather targeted and focused not on tommorow or yesterday but rather the moment. Addressing the issues and removing all the nonsense, and in his passing, those lessons learned continue on. So mercedes has a strength most teams dont have because theyre caught up in drama, either causing drama, chasing drama, or falling victim to drama. Other teams, are hindered by financial strife, some by way of simply not being as good. As they said it themselves, their not sitting on their laurels patting themselves on the backs for deeds of the past, nor being arrogant to execpt future wins to just fall from the sky into their hands. They make it look easy because theyve truly learned how to keep their mental game in the best shape possible.

@@f1freakf127 That's very true but you have to see from Lauda's side. He knew exactly from the driver's side because he was one himself. But as a part team owner, he must assign the blame because the selfish actions from 'both drivers' caused the team the 1-2 finish. Drivers work for the team and team is always greater. Why should the team working so bloody hard in the factory and the paddock came away with absolutely nothing? In front of millions of their fans all over the world? It was an absolute marketing disaster! Have a look a Lauda's candid interview with Graham Benzinger (available on KZbin), he gave a dress down both to Nico and Lewis right after the crash. Niki simply said to Nico, 'Why were you not playing attention to the clutch problem at the start leading to the car getting low on ERS battery power?' Also he mentioned the race was long, it was only the first lap, 'Why not giving enough space to Lewis so both of you can fight other times during the race? Race strategies can be changed and there are other ways to win.' To Lewis, Lauda said, 'You knew you saw the flashing rear lights at the back of Nico's car. That meant he has at least 160 less bhp than you. Why did you chose to pass on the inside right where there were hardly any room, when there was a whole lot more on the outside left? Even on the outside with the horsepower difference, you could pass much easily?' Lewis admitted he was in the heat of the battle so he didn't actually thinking of that. The lost of that title in 2016 and other wise words from Niki actually made Lewis much better all around racer he is today. However, after hearing from both drivers. Niki in the team owner's shoe must be the bad guy to assign the 'blame' to appease the media for the image of the team. So he went with Lewis in the public for causing the crash which he wasn't happy about. But both Lewis and Nico understood the politics of F-1 with media as nothing more than a sounding board. Actually, Toto seemed calm but he really was not. Like Niki, they both wanted to fire both drivers 'on the spot'! But their temperaments of both rational Austrians nature were the reasons they soon calmed down to deal with their brains first. The team is the most important asset so they addressed that quickly. That 2016 season was tough for the team and they never wanted to see that type of in-fighting again.

So many people have a go at him for his life style but many people don't see the hard work, the endless gym sessions, the sweat and the hours he puts in to be where he is. Fair play to the lad, and I hope he beats M. Schumacher's record even though I grew up watching the legend schumi. After all, records are there to be broken :)

Ive always been a fan of Lewis, but sometimes it's easy to fall into wanting to see a new champion. After watching this I feel differently about them. This is what makes a team or any company successful. Managers and CEOs should take note. The way they talk about money and contracts is inspiring. It's not all about getting the most for the least amount. They see more value than just a paycheck. Much respect for those two.

It's funny, people be saying, "Mercedes win cause they have a lot of money" Hell yeah they do! But that money and having the best driver and being a serial success is because of their mentality, their flexibility and creativity, not being afraid to change and adapt, that's what really has made the best team. No amount of money or success comes out of thin air

I particularly liked Lewis' response to Brundle's "Hamilton should go to Ferrari" fixation/agenda. Understandably, these was a bit of polite tension in the room since Brundle has raised the issue and made it an item several times over the past weeks. Hamilton's reply that hd views his long term interest to be better aligned and better served with his association with Mercedes than creating "a story that would be good for F1" illustrates he is more aware and sees his life's road better than all others. PS. No serious person negotiates their contract on KZbin. But, It had to be addressed. because
