t was 1945. I was sixteen. A “friend” took me to the Stuyvesant Casino to hear some “authentic New Orleans Jazz.” I think it was in Brooklyn. The leader was Bunk Johnson on Trumpet. Jim Robinson was on trombone, Baby Dodds on drums, George Lewis on clarinet and Don Ewell on piano. Ewell was the only Caucasian in the group. The previous year, George Lewis had recorded Burgundy Street Blues. The correct pronunciation places the accent on “gun”. I fell in love with the music and for the next couple of weeks I was there every night until the group returned to New Orleans. The closest I ever came to similar enjoyment was about 30 years later when Kid Ory was at the Beverly Caverns in Los Angeles playing Muskrat Ramble. Teddy Buckner was with him. I went there so often that Ory often say at my table and we exchanged anecdotes. I’m now 90 years old and almost deaf but I have wonderful memories of my introduction to New Orleans Jazz.

Ed, I'm a few years younger than you. I, too, was taken to the Casino in the Forties when I was young, It was was in Manhattan not Brooklyn. What I was remember most was that a pitcher of beer was $1 and my best friend's bohemian parents insisted I drink with them, a habit I resisted, but, I'm happy to say, no longer do. I had an entirely different impression. The evening ended with a lot of white guys playing WHEN THE SAINTS GO WATCHING IN as loudly as they good while a lot of drunken Ivy League guys and their dates screamed and shouted. This put me off Dixieland for years, and it wasn't until twenty years later when a pal played me one of Jack Teagarden's 1960s Roulette recordings that I finally came to appreciate what wonderful music it could be. Still do.

I envy you SB! There are those of us who have to make do with LPs,CD's and snatches from cellfones, I too LOVE N.O and ALL its musicians, I wish the rest of the world would follow this instead of warring.

My old dad used to play jazz and blues piano by ear. He 'acquired' radio from a Sunderland flying boat at the end of the war and when I was born in '53, he still had it. This thing was so powerful it picked up the entire eastern seaboard of the US. I was raised on jazz, blues, country, bluegrass and folk! I did my pilgrimage to the US as a callow youth in 1975 and worked for a few months in a fairground in Myrtle Beach before buying a rover ticket on the Greyhound and going to, you guessed it, New Orleans and Nashville. Nashville was a disappointment, but New Orleans was most certainly not and I remember to this day just sitting cross legged on the floor in Preservation Hall, enraptured by these old guys tearing my heart out with every precious note!

Nawlins is the best, the mecca of the jazz world...used to party full blast there...1st time I visited was in the 60's, and fell in love with it, and the hereafter has been great with too many frequent $$tays down there, most I could take was three weeks... have to leave & go home to heal and get back to reality. Lived & worked around the world north & south of the equator and I always go back to N.O., it is the best for jazz, and I love the fabulous food....for jazz lovers you ain't complete if you haven't visited N.O. French Quarter as well as the jazz festivals...not like it used to be with so many of the great musicians have transitioned, but great timeless jazz/blues music is still there to appreciate & enjoy. Retired now being a seasoned & active "septuagenarian" & I still love it there....rearing to go this spring and year to further test my vital organs once again. So many great times in & across the state of Louisiana....such friendly/hospitable people has been my unforgettable experience!

This is what I'm talking about when I mention New Orleans jazz. There's just a certain spirit to it that sets it apart. Lots of trumpet, piano and string.

Every little while, I hear this kind of jazz in a movie or as a ringtone or alarm, and I like it. So I am happy to find out what it's called, and can come back to it and just plain enjoy the lively tunes
