As a Chinese, I'd like to explain sth. The single's day has existed in China for years ealier than the online shopping day. So it was not alibaba who invented the single's day. In fact what alibaba invented was "Double Eleven E-shopping Day", a day which has a different concept from the single's day. They just happen to be the same day but they don't have the relationship Lew guessed in the video. As for the question, I seldom buy american products (including apple products) but recent things USA has done to my country DOES make me rethink buying these products.

I am 18, British and tech enthusiast but I am very sentimental so I still have and actively use my 4th generation ipod nano that my great nan got me for Christmas just before she passed. Living in China + was speaking to an advertising exec who talked about a study done into which American brands were safest from Chinese consumer backlash. Among the safest was Disney (strong emotional connection + no real viable alternatives to their products). One of the most vulnerable brands however was Apple - seen purely as a products in a marketplace full of viable alternatives. It used to be seen as premium because of the price point, but other brands now have comparable premium models + i-phones for example now also have budget versions. Result - little loyalty to the brand. I suspect any American brand that has similar offerings from competitors (especially if it's a Chinese company), will feel some pain in sales numbers on Singles day.
