I’ve had this exact scenario happen to me four years ago. The physical therapy is a must. Even before my surgery it, combined with the therapy and extra treatments after such as muscle stimulation with a TENS unit, icing, and massage…I regained strength in my knee and started to be able to walk miles again. And it is important to continue stretching and doing the exercises they teach in PT even after your sessions are done. Imperative. I easily went back to hurting because I wasn’t careful and didn’t do the maintenance.

Neck and shoulders is what I have problems with, the very occasional frozen shoulder and general tenderness that goes down under the shoulder blade. When I was a young teen, I turned my head whilst lying in bed to look at my alarm clock before school and there was an almighty bang in my neck (right side) and one of the muscles had just snapped. I couldn't even sit up, the pain was like fire shooting down my spine. So now I have a lot of stiffness in the shoulders and neck and they're always crunching and popping.

Best advice? Do you have health insurance? If so you probably have some Physical Therapy on the plan. Give your doctor and call and say you jacked yourself up and need a PT. They should be able to free up whatever’s locked up, run you through a graduated workout regime that will strengthen the supporting muscles in a way that won’t further damage it. After they’ve got you back to fairly good, they will be able to give you some personalized exercises.
