I remember how my theory professor lost it when I asked, "So, if I use scale-appropriate tones for the melody in relation to the harmony, then I'm on the right track?" He was furious! In retrospect, he had a point-I was quite a handful. But still, employing "modern counterpoint" can indeed result in superb music...

I was expecting an ostinato that followed the harmony changes more & did more with modulations, but this piece is very cool too. I hope more people learn bass instruments can play more than root notes :)

I was keen to do something that is harmonically interesting but also not get too crazy or it would be breaking from this genre immediately. I’m a big sucker for the 3rd in the bass over maj9 chords. You’ll find that all over my music, including this piece in a couple of spots with a D9/F# 😉

Me: Secretly shares this video with every director who's given me a brief wanting something "epic" lol!!! Thank you Mattia for constantly uploading quality content. This video in particular has helped me tremendously in feeling like I'm not the only one who is trying to maintain their own 'sound' within this world of orchestral writing. I also love that this is NOT a shot at Hans at all, but rather letting composers, music enthusiasts alike and directors know that, sometimes you've gotta trust your composer. We all want a John Williams, Thomas Newman or a Hans Zimmer but never trust the process that got them their names in the first place. Let composers compose in their own unique ways and watch how beautifully different the layout of Hollywood/Indi Film scores becomes.

Hi, CSS has quite a big dynamic range so for that I only only use cc1. Usually I play it in myself but also tweak the curves. For this piece though I didn’t really massage any of the curves. I was happy of how it turned out on the first take, something I hadn’t heard experienced in a long time.

Hi Mattis, I have a question not related to your videos…was wondering what your thoughts are on the SL88 Grand you have. Does the weight lend itself to piano only, or are you able to easily play organ, synths, and orchestral VIs with it? I have an M Audio Hammer88, and I like it a lot, but might want something that’s closer to a piano. Any thoughts would be great, thanks. :). And look forward to your next videos.

I'm not a trained pianist and I bought this keyboard only for the purpose of having something to practice with a "similar" feel to a grand. I had a semi weighted controller before this and I'd still prefer it over hammer action for VI stuff. To be honest though I have yet to find a keyboard that I like. In an ideal world I would probably use a real piano and a cheap keystation 88 for everything else. The only important thing for me is to have 88 keys, the rest is very much secondary cause regardless how good the response is, I'd still be tweaking velocities all day.

@@MattiaChiappa gotcha. I studied classical piano so the feel for me would be important for the 88 keys. My Hammer 88 is actually quite good with its response, but was looking for a triple sensor keybed as an upgrade. I also use an Arturia Keylab 49 MKII for everything but piano and sometimes that also. @@MattiaChiappa Not a problem. In WTC Book 1 Prelude 2 in Cm, first measure, Bach writes the same notes in Cm as you do for your ostinato except he uses octave C and you use an A in Dm transposition. Just saying your ostinato reminded me of Bach’s WTC. I like your video.
