A luxury car like Lexus should have Dash Cams, front and rear as standard equipment. They are really useful in the event of an accident or even vandalism.
@joshjamescars

I 10000% agree, but I think the two-party-consent laws in some states make it a liability for them (yes I know Tesla already does that, but they take on all kinds of liability LOL). That said, since the car already has the digital mirror cam mounted at the top of the rear window, which is basically a rear facing dash cam, I feel like all they’d have to do is retrofit some kind of storage device to it. But that’s probably wishful thinking LOL!

This is also a great video for the thousands of people currently waiting for 2023 Rx’s as the infotainment systems are the same. I’ve watched 30 or more 2023 Rx videos, and none of them get into the detail of the infotainment system as this one does. Great job, Josh! I hope that Lexus engineers / designers watch this.

Thank you so much! And yes, I agree! I watched a ton of videos on both and there were still surprises when I actually got and started to live with it. It takes some getting used to, but (like you said) I hope Toyota listens to us and improves it over time haha! I’m also hoping some of the lag I’m seeing (like on the voice system initializing) is inefficient code and not insufficient processing power. That’ll kill this real quick if it is.

Hi Josh! We’re a Toyota family. My previous car was a Highlander I had it for 9 years! I traded that car in and now own a 2023 RX 350h and love my new car. I have had it for 2 months and enjoy driving that car every day. Can’t go wrong with Toyota/Lexus they’re such a liable company. ❤

I’m at 4 months with my NX450h+ and love it so far. I customized my fan speeds and the on/off into my HUD. After watching LSFT’s videos I sat in the NX and switched the info in the HUD to my preferences vs factory, but it’s just myself using the car. Great review of the NX 350h and many, other reviews with other products. I really like that you present likes and dislikes where other owners and vendors or solicitors always say wonder things about the Lexus. While the Lexus is an excellent product, I am super glad that we have a great excellent expert advising us as consumers the do's and don'ts along with good and not so good of this wonderful vehicle. Thank you for your intense research on this product and I personally would like to talk to you. @@joshjamescars The test drive was worth it. I was hyped up on the NX350h, but after nearly hitting my head on the interior ceiling more than once, I decided it was a "no go." I'm not even a very tall person (5'5"), but for anyone with a tall torso, your head sits pretty high... even when lowering the seat as much as possible. Also, sitting in the back seat (where no seat adjustments are possible), you have maybe an inch or two leeway. The trunk space was also smaller than I expected. Anyways, I loved how it drove - very quiet and comfortable ("pleasant" as you say often), it had a feeling of power despite being a hybrid (the Honda CRV hybrid felt very weak to me in acceleration), and interior qualities were top notch. I also tried the Venza this afternoon and felt it was marginally better, but so loud for a hybrid. Wonder if they simulated some acceleration noise for "sportiness" or it's just poor insulation to the engine. Appreciate your insights on these cars via your channel. Cheers!

Thanks for the review. A couple of things to note: 1. I LOVE the Cloudburst gray, but I've never been a fan of red interiors. The reason, ironically, is my grandmother had a vehicle with a red interior and I always think of that as an interior color for older people! Ha ha! 2. The navigation on the previous NX that I have was the Scout GPS Link. That thing is HORRIBLE! It had me making a U-Turn on the interstate! Ugh. So I think the navigation in this model is a VAST improvement! 3. Finally, I think a lot of manufacturers are doing away with physical buttons and having a number of functions accessed via the infotainment system. It's not just luxury vehicles either. Hyundai & KIA are doing it as well.

Hi Josh, I have the 450NXh+ but I fully agree with all your likes and dislikes but it is still a fantastic luxury car! Hi Steve! That’s a fantastic vehicle. We have a Rav4 Prime and love it, so I can imagine the 450h is fantastic to drive, and that’s so interesting about the speed warning and live traffic! I am considering the turbo option because the hybrid is in high demand and hard to get here in NJ. Sure, I could go for the BMW or Audi but Lexus has the reliability and cost to own on its side. BTW, you provided a lot of reasons to go for the NX in your “likes” section, hybrid or not.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Hello! What I’d advise you do is make contact with a bunch of different salespeople, even at the same dealers. What I’ve heard of happening a lot (and was my experience), if they have an NX hybrid come in and they call their customer who reserved it and that customer no longer wants the vehicle, that salesperson can offer it to anyone. It doesn’t have to go back into the larger dealer pool. In terms of the turbo, I would definitely test drive it first. I’m just not a fan. It’s fine for use in a Toyota but it’s nowhere near as refined as what should be in a Lexus IMO. Though, I guess we’re officially past the days of engines that sound and feel really nice to drive since all the Europeans have gone with tiny turbo-4s too.

Hi Josh, I'm on a waitlist for this car in my area and specked out the 350H Luxury, but then you said something about the leather being so difficult? Can you elaborate as to what those issues are? Thanks so much and your video was so so helpful!
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Sure! What I said in the video was that the Luxury package comes with semi-aniline leather, but I got the detail wrong in the video, it doesn’t have semi-aniline leather, that’s a higher-grade that I’ve had in other European luxury cars and sooo high maintenance. The NX isn’t fancy enough for Lexus to give it that, I suppose, so it just has regular leather. But regardless, I much prefer Lexus NuLuxe. It’s a man-made textile that feels just like leather that doesn’t require any of the upkeep and babying that nice leather does. Doesn’t ever stretch, fade, stain, etc. And I’m so glad the video was helpful and I hope you get yours soon!!!

OMG! I am a subscriber to your luxury channel. This is such a coincidence . Today, May 20, 2023, I began to look for a new car. I brought my 16-year old Lexus GS 350 for service and was offered an NX 350 Hybrid AWD exactly like yours in Cloudburst Grey with Red interior as my loaner. It was offered to me, because I plan to trade my car in for a NX 250 and my service advisor wanted me to take the NX home and test it out over the weekend. I plan to get either Atomic Silver or Caviar Black with Black Interior though. I don't want the Turbo, because I was told the scheduled maintenance would be more frequent and costly than the non-turbo. The hybrid is more money which is outside my budget for a car. The NX looks like a Rav 4 on Steroids...LOL. Oh no... you don't like the NX 250. 😂😪😐😥😭😱😢😳
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Hello!! Oh that is too funny!! The NX is a great car and I’m glad you’re getting to test drive it before you buy! That said, yes unfortunately I don’t like the turbo either, I hate the way turbo-4s drive. And the 250 I wouldn’t recommend you buy because the 4-cylinder engine in it comes right out of a base model Rav4 or Camry and I just don’t feel like it belongs in a Lexus. It’s slow and unrefined. You’re currently test driving the hybrid and its a lot different than that base engine. What I might recommend you do if they can’t find you an NX250 to test drive is go to the Toyota dealer and ask to test drive a gas only rav4. It’ll be the exact same engine. If there’s any way you could comfortably stretch your budge to get the 350h I would. OR, if not I might advise you take a look at the Toyota Venza. It’s the same car underneath the skin as the NX (engine, platform, etc.) and you can get a fully loaded Venza with all the things (big screen, pano roof, HUD, 360 cam, etc.) for around $44K. It’s an incredible car for the money and genuinely feels like a Lexus especially in the higher trim models.

It is, and here’s the dealbreaker for me with the new RX-they got rid of the 3.5L V6 and now the NX and RX share the same powertrains (both hybrid and non-hybrid) and I feel like they’re just right for the NX but the new RX is a much larger, heavier vehicle and I don’t think I’d want to drive the new RX with the same engine and electric motor that’s in my NX. I had a Highlander in the past which had the same 3.5 V6 as is in your RX and I just don’t think it’s the same experience without it.

Thank you so much for all your kind words! And I loved your generation RX. Honestly for me, the minute they took away the V6, the RX was off the table. Especially now that the RX shares the exact same powertrains with the NX (except the 500h) and I think the power is just adequate for my NX; I couldn’t imagine driving the same powertrain in a bigger, heavier RX. Same reason I’m holding onto my 4Runner; I know as soon as they refresh it, it’ll move to probably the same turbo/hybrid 4s as are in the RX.

Congrats!!! Here’s hoping it gets here soon!! I agree 100% with the price savings and I just feel like they’ll never be able to match the V6 smoothness. It’s a real shame. I’ve been a Toyota loyalist for my entire driving life and will keep my 4Runner forever, but this Lexus will likely be the last Toyota I buy. I can’t get over them going to the turbo-4s and turbo-hybrid-4s. The NX here is a relatively well priced semi-premium car so it’s not full on luxury money so I can overlook the CVT but the 500h is a hard pass for me. Like they’re trying to sell a turbo-hybrid-4 on a front wheel drive bias platform shared with the Camry as a performance car. Not sure about there, but for the money that they’re asking here in the US, I’d MUCH rather buy a BMW, Audi, or Porsche. We still have V6 and V8 Lexuses with 6 and 8 speed transmissions here in the US but they’re all going away in the next few years and when they do, so will I as a customer.

Thanks so much for your honest review! Loved hearing about your +/- experience with the 350h. I'm trying to find one in California to test drive before buying one, but they've been hard to get a hold of! A lot of cars here are currently only available through preorder due to low supplies. I did have a question about the brakes and suspension; several review videos I watched mentioned how the brakes feel a bit jerky and the suspension system still feels not as much "driving on a cloud" as let's say a Toyota Highlander or even your Toyota Prime? Curious if this is the same experience for you and your partner! My commute for work is an hour each way so definitely looking for something more efficient and comfortable and was hoping the 350h was the one!
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Hello! Before I get into the answer to your question my advice to you for buying one is to find a dealer who will refund your deposit if you decide you don’t want the car, but get on the list. California’s market is insane and unfortunately that’s the only way you’ll get one. Where I draw the line is paying above asking. Okay, now for your question. I’d you haven’t driven a hybrid before, the brakes will take some getting used to because there’s a mix of regenerative braking and actual physical brake pad braking that happens. It’s to recuperate as much energy from the drag of braking as possible. So building the muscle memory to brake gently in ANY hybrid or EV will take a little bit of time. As for the ride comfort, I think the NX is really comfortable. I tend to not put too much stock in how reviewers say cars ride because they drive so many cars that if you just got out of a Mercedes S Class of course the NX isn’t going to ride as nicely. Now, with that said, I think a lot of the press cars have the 20” wheels I have and that does make for a much firmer ride so I would avoid those and go with the standard 18” wheels so you’ll get a bigger tire which does wonders for the ride quality. Now, bigger cars generally have more weight to dampen out the ride, and of course body on frame trucks like my 4Runner feel like you’re floating on a cloud. BUT of course that comes at the cost of lower fuel economy and extra wasted space that you might not need. You might also take a look at the Toyota Venza. It’s basically a less nice Toyota version of the NX. Of the two, the NX is sportier and slightly firmer but it’s not uncomfortable by any means. I would also check out the comparison video between our Rav and NX on the channel, there’s a segment in there where I take both cars out on the road. That might be helpful to you too. I’m trying to get my hands on a venza to do a review with but I’m not a professional so I don’t know if that’ll ever happen.

Hello and thank you! Check out the other videos on my channel. I have a comparison between the NX and the Rav. I also have a video on why I wouldn’t and didn’t buy the 450h+ and everything in there I would also apply to the RAV4 Prime. I don’t know if it’s worth the money without incentives. Something to consider on the Prime too-we are nearing 5 years on this generation of RAV4. Meaning, a new one should be coming in the next couple years. Given that, you may get your Rav4 Prime at the very tail end of the model run and a brand new even Better one may come out.

Nice review, My 350nxh is still awaiting a build date, hopefully soon as Japan are getting back on track now.. The red leather interior was my choice, in UK the model below Takumi or whatever it’s called, has leather. I have driven both with leather & non leather & both are really good. I hope the leathe turns out ok and seats don’t give and say like my old merry did. My only wish is taat there were more colour options. I’ve had grey in a few forms but am tired of it now. Also the red option in the UK is not as nice or I would have had red, but with a red interior I wasn’t sure. I’ve gone for the pearl white with red interior . I suppose an option is to put a wrap or protection film of some contrast colour on. Anyway back to dreaming of my new Lexus for now Again a good comprehensive & honest review, 👌

Ah I hope it gets built and arrives to you soon!! The leather will be fine as long as you are gentle with it and clean and condition it on a regular basis so that the leather retains its moisture. As for the collapsing, I don’t think you need to worry too much about that; Lexus and Toyota have great seat cushioning. The one thing I will say that not many people know about softex (toyota)/nuluxe (lexus) is that with softex, the textile is actually bonded to the seat foam, versus leather which just wraps around it because leather will expand and relax over time where softex won’t (another reason I love softex/nuluxe).

@@joshjamescars hey, would you please share what is your actual gas millage and why you didn't buy the 450h? what is 450h gas millage in compare with your 350h? thank you
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Sure! I’m going to give you two caveats here because they both impact my mileage. First, the car is still in its break-in period and your fuel economy will never be at its best when the car is brand new. Second, I don’t drive all that nicely LOL. I tend to drive fast and accelerate hard and we do 85-105 on the freeways here and hybrids don’t do all that well at those speeds. BUT, even with all that considered I’m doing around 30 mpg which is pretty good all things considered. As for the 450h+, I just didn’t need a plug in and didn’t want to pay for it. If you don’t know how PHEVs work, I’d look into that for a full explanation. We also have a Rav4 Prime which is the exact same vehicle as the 450h+ underneath. The only difference between the 350h and 450h is the bigger electric battery that allows you to drive on full EV for 35 miles. That’s it, it doesn’t actually improve fuel economy when running in hybrid mode. Actually, after the battery is depleted, the fuel economy is actually worse than the 350h because the bigger battery in there is so heavy and adds a ton of weight to the car. You HAVE to plug in the 450h+ daily to make the most use out of it. And you’re paying a big premium (about $8-10K more) for the 35 miles of EV range. And there’s no federal tax credit or state incentive available for us on the 450h+. Finally, at this point, the only 450h+ models I’ve seen available for sale are the fully loaded F-Sport Handling version which is $65K MSRP so $70K out the door and that’s just WAY too much for an NX.

People have said that the RX is more comfortable than the NX. Why would Lexus do that and not use the same seats in both vehicles and/or suspension? If I was the head of design, both vehicles should function exactly the same and size would only be the difference. This way, no one can ever say the RX is better.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Well, first I think that comfort is subjective so it depends who is saying that and why. Japanese compact cars are too small and cramped for some of my taller and wider friends so that I can understand. I also think some people find “comfort” in having more space and the RX does definitely have more space. I also think the RX is better in some ways but the NX is also way better in others. Especially the power trains right now. Because the NX and RX actually share the same engines and powertrains for all 350 and 350h vehicles, the NX actually has better power. I also think that the NX is FAR better looking than the RX. Also, F-Sport models are always firmer and harsher in ride than non F-sports. So even with better seats an RX F-Sport might be less comfortable than my NX with the more comfort oriented suspension. But, I guess I just don’t worry about anyone saying their car is better than mine if mine is perfect for me? I don’t have time or care to worry about someone saying their car is better than mine.

Thank you for your personal review! Very helpful! I need you to go shopping with me! Did you look at the UX250h? I am leaning toward that one. The outside is kind of funky, but no one really rides with me regularly except my 3 small dogs and my BF once in a while. I just think for every day that that one would be best for me. It's a little on the small side. That's the only thing that makes me hesitant.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
I personally didn’t consider the UX but I actually had one as a courtesy car! Since I wasn’t trading anything in on the NX, the dealer was nice enough to give me one while they prepped the car so I wouldn’t have to Uber back there when the car was ready for delivery. Ended up having it for four days since an ice storm shut our city down between my purchase and delivery. I actually thought it was really well equipped and felt really premium inside considering it’s their entry level model. Even the non Mark Levinson sound system was terrific. 23 and up has the new infotainment system too on a gorgeous 10 or 12” widescreen display. Looks HUGE in the small cabin. Really nice. Like you say, the space would be the biggest issue for me; my husband and I fit in it just fine but we’re short. I think I would depend on how much space you feel like your dogs need. It’s essentially on the same platform as the Toyota CH-R and Corolla hatch (though inside it’s closer to the CH-R), so if you can’t find a UX to test drive or sit in, you might look at those two at a Toyota dealer just to get a sense of size. The other thing to consider is that although they bill it as a “crossover” it’s really a hatch back and rides lower to the ground and some people either really like or dislike that. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

Thank you for such a wonderful review! I was a little discouraged because I can't afford a new Lexus RX 350H. I do like the looks, engine, etc. of the previous generation Lexus RX but having the new tech inside is pretty important to me. I was looking at a brand new Lexus NX 350h or a used 2021 BMW X5, and it doesn't look like you are sacrificing much at all with an NX compared to the RX, given it's only my fiancé and I. It's a brilliant little car! What would you recommend, a new Lexus NX350h or a used 2021 BMW X5 if my primary use is for freeway road trip journeys? Thanks again for another wonderful review Josh!
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 7 ай бұрын
Hello! There are a number of considerations here and I’ll be honest and say that I don’t think either one of them is going to be ideal for road tripping. The NX lacks a spare tire which I think is a must for road tripping, while a 2021 X5 is getting to the age where you’re going to start running into some costly maintenance items especially if you’re road tripping frequently and piling on the miles. I know you say you can’t afford a new RX but I think it’s a pretty safe bet that you’ll end up paying more over 5 years with the X5 than a new RX. If you buy the X5, I would set aside about $3-5K a year for maintenance and repair. Service on European luxury cars is about $1-2K and then you’ll want to have enough for a new set of tires (and you’ll want a good set for an X5) on top of that. BMW’s CPO warranty also is very limited and only covers very specific things and so once the car is outside of the factory warranty, most technology isn’t going to be covered. A new head unit will cost you about $5-7K. Same with the fancy headlight units, etc. Finally, if you’re financing, interest rates on used are usually much, much higher. Insurance is also much higher on German versus Japanese. So you have to think about the actual, real world cost to own that X5. The worst thing anyone can do is buy a car they can afford at sticker price but then get put into debt trying to maintain it after the fact. It’s the same reason why I own a Lexus GX and not a Porsche Cayenne (traded the NX in on the GX last summer). Sure I could have gotten a used one for the same $65K I paid for my GX brand new but long term I don’t want to pay for German car ownership. Also think about the depreciation on the Lexus vs the BMW. The Lexus is going to give you WAY more back when you go to sell it down the road and I’m assuming that you’re younger like I am. That’s critical to setting ourselves up for success in the long term. You want as much back when you go to sell this car as you can get. All that said, if I had to pick between the two I’d go with the NX. But I would highly recommend you sacrifice the luxury badge (and the ego boost) and use the same money to get a really nice new Highlander or something like that. Or maybe look at a certified 2022 RX if you really absolutely have to have a premium badge.

Hello! The NX and RX have new door handles that are electronically actuated using a button on the inside of the handle similar to the electronic release on modern power tailgates. So to enter and exit the car is a button on the inside and a button on the outside. It’s designed that way because the car uses the blind spot radar to prevent you from opening your door and getting out into traffic. It’s a little bit odd at first but you get used to it pretty quickly.

Thank you!!! And oddly I don’t. I thought I would, but I got used to them pretty quickly and although it is maybe more complicated than it needs to be I like that you can see exactly what you’re about to press without having to take your eyes off the road. I don’t know how to explain it but with some other modern Toyotas (and cars in general) they cram so many tiny buttons on the wheel that you do sometimes have to look and or think about what to press to do what you want and the seconds it takes for your eyes to look down, refocus on the wheel, press the button, look back up, refocus on the road; this system kind of mitigates that. Once you customize this wheel the way you want it, it makes it pretty intuitive.

It doesn’t matter, honestly. The whole powertrain is exactly what’s in the Rav/Venza/Highlander/RX. @joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Heyyy! I think we were talking on Reddit too on the thread about your hubby having a ZR2, 4-door Silverado! Great to see you here too LOL!! The 4Runner to NX is night and day. Literally. Not bad or good just different. Lower seating position, way more refined, less rugged, lighter steering, more technology, etc. I think it’s the perfect compliment to a truck (talking about your Silverado). And even though you’re moving from a truck to a compact crossover, because it’s a Toyota you’ll still have the same dependability and reliability as the 4Runner. I think they actually do 60 in around the same time (mid-7 second range) but the NX might feel faster because of the electric torque. If I were getting rid of my 4Runner tho I would miss the low end pull and the feeling of the naturally aspirated 4-Liter. There’s NO replicating that with any turbo or hybrid. Otherwise, though, I think the NX is great. The only thing you won’t have is the GIGANTIC enclosed cargo space that the 4Runner has (unless your Silverado has a camper shell on it). But if you never use all of it, I think you’re fine. If you’re coming from the 4Runner, which has an interior that always looks good and you never have to really worry much about, I might steer clear of the luxury package leather and go with NuLuxe. If you’ve never had a car with that grade of semi-aniline leather, it’s a real pain to keep it nice. You HAVE to condition and clean it weekly and anytime you wear jeans and leather just naturally expands and loses its luster over time, and how good it looks visually goes a long way to getting more for it when you go to sell it later on. The NuLuxe is fantastic and a nicer quality version of the SofTex that’s in most 4Runners. Hope this helps!!!

@@joshjamescars Josh, she was asking how far does your NX goes in terms of mileage and not 0-60 time. Can it drive like 400 miles on a tank etc.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Ah. That wasn’t clear-thanks for clarifying. I mentioned 0-60 because it is an important factor in terms of how the vehicle drives in comparison to the 4Runner (about the same time but totally different feeling). Theoretical range on a single tank is 500 miles (14.5 gallon tank at 35mpg) but that is entirely dependent on your fuel economy and fuel economy is entirely dependent on your driving style, whether you’re driving highway versus stop and go, and how many people or how much stuff you’re carrying (weight). Here in Texas with the way I drive (fast) I get between 28 and 32 mpg so my theoretical range is more like 400-450 miles.

Some similarities with yourselves and myself and my partner. He purchased an NX350H AWD in the same colour (we’ve now been waiting a year for it to arrive). He insisted on the Palamino interior though, which is the semi-aniline leather as you mentioned (he ordered the top trim as he wanted the panoramic roof and Mark Levinson), so that’s going to be interesting considering he knows nothing about cars!! We’re in Australia and have the same 250, 350/350H and 450h+, but ours are split into Luxury, F Sport and Sports Luxury, with the latter two being almost identically priced… and then the options are bundled into ‘Enhancement Packs’. Really really great insights into your ownership experience. The only question I have is about the E-AWD… is the delay due to it not being mechanically connected ever annoying?
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
WOW. I can’t believe the wait on these is still that long in some places. We got ours in a week or so after putting a deposit down. Not sure if you can get Chemical Guys products in Australia but cleaning and conditioning once a week was the saving grace for the semi-aniline leather we had in our XC90 before this. Which had Amber leather which is almost identical in color to Palomino. GORGEOUS. Putting a link to their US site below, hope you can access it. Cleaning is key to remove any color transfer and dirt/grime that accumulates and then conditioning it to keep it moisturized (just like skin) is critical, or it’ll crack. Also, semi-aniline leather scratches and scuffs like crazy so be very gentle getting in and out (like jeans and pants rubbing over the edge of the seat as you get in and out). It’s so high maintenance BUT so worth it if you don’t mind that. I was over it after our years with the XC90 LOL. Also, on the AWD note-it’s not annoying BUT if you’re on slick or loose pavement getting the AWD to engage is a little counter intuitive if you’ve driven a mechanical 4x4. Where in a mechanical 4x4 you ease up on the accelerator if you start to slip, you actually have to lean into the accelerator in the eAWD system to force slip to get the rear wheels to kick in. The trail/off road mode helps too if you’re going to be on a gravel road or something where you want it on constantly. www.chemicalguys.com/leather-cleaner-and-conditioner-complete-leather-care-kit/SPI_109_16.html?gtmListValue=Internal%20Search

It’s half the same-the 4-cylinder engine is shared with the Rav hybrid but the electric motors are larger than the Rav’s. It’s exactly the same powertrain as is in the new RX and Highlander hybrids. Cool video, Josh which one would You choose IF YOU Had the option? 2023 UX 250h or 2023 NX 350h? Boston MA.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Thanks! It would be the NX for sure. The UX is great but it has some limitations. The interior and cargo area is too cramped, especially for how much it costs. It’s based on the Toyota CHR as that was the only subcompact Toyota had at the time it was being developed, so it makes sense that it is the way it is. But I’m guessing/hoping that when they redesign it they base it on the new Corolla Cross instead (which like the UX is one class down from the Rav4 which the NX is based on) because the Corolla Cross is a fantastic size. Even the NX though wouldn’t be too big for Boston city streets and parking lots. It’s a really great size footprint wise. The other limitation on the UX is that the eAWD system only works up to 32 mph. Don’t know why, but it’s mostly for getting unstuck at lower speeds. 32 is what we do here in Texas on little side streets but any main road is way over 40 and IMO AWD on crossovers is most useful for maintaining solid traction and drive on slick roads at highway speeds. I’m imagining driving in winter weather up in the Northeast. Even on snow plowed and salted roads you want that all-wheel traction going around curves at higher speeds. The NX can run all four wheels at all speeds. You might also have a little more trouble with getting through snow buildup if that’s an issue where you drive because the UX is really a hatch back and it’s low to the ground where the NX is a proper crossover.

Hi Josh, I was checking to see if the NX350h is FWD bias; and when AWD is on, the power is 50/50 split on both axles? Thanks again. I placed an order for the 2024 model.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Hello! Yes, the car is FWD bias and AWD isn’t just on or off, it’s constantly modulating the power that’s being sent to each wheel as necessary to keep the car moving forward. It’s also not an even 50/50 split because power isn’t being shared across axels, the main engine and electric motor are sending power to the front wheels and then there’s an entirely separate rear electric motor sending power to the rear wheels. This isn’t like my 4Runner which has true, mechanical 4WD and can actually do off-roading and such, so keep that in mind. The CR-V hybrid has an actual mechanical linkage from the engine to the rear axle but the NX and Rav don’t. The eAWD is only for maintaining traction on the highway.

i'm more baffled than i've ever been.... You didn't option the full panoramic roof you didn't option the Mark levinson audio....AND you say the MAIN reason you bought this was because you wanted a hybrid.... so...... why didn't you buy the 450 H+ instead? To me the 450 H+ is "Hybrid Nirvana"... (the only caveats being you can't get the mark lev audio or the full pano roof.) Any thoughts on Safe Exist Assist and those electronic door handles? Like or Dislike?
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Pano roof and ML just weren’t that important to me. Pano roof because nobody is ever in the back seat. There was one in Houston that was available that had it but I didn’t care for the color combo on it. As for the 450H+, we already have a Rav4 Prime (same drivetrain and faster to 60 plus more range) Didn’t feel like we needed another one. The 450 is also more than I think an NX is worth, especially when you can’t get any kind of tax credit on it in the US. We bought our Prime when there was both the $7,500 tax credit and the $2,500 state incentive and if those were still in place I absolutely would have gotten the 450h (the ones that have been available in my market are all F-Sport Handlings that were $65K MSRP or over $70K OTD and that is just way too much for the quality of the NX. If I’m spending that much I’m going to go and get an RX500H. I don’t mind the safe exit assist or the electronic door handles. I’ve gotten used to them, and I much prefer them electronic door handles that are motorized (Tesla, Land Rover, etc.) I think for people who frequently park on the street in a busy city center or on busy residential streets it might be really useful.
@pyrodon1910
@pyrodon1910 Жыл бұрын
@@joshjamescars I agree completely. The F-Sport/handling package makes the price of the 450 NX unreasonable plus in my humble opinion while the F sport grill isn't ugly I think the non F-sport grill (and overall style cues) compliment the car better so even if the F-Sport was cheaper I would pay extra to have it styled like yours.(although i prefer the triple beam headlights) I specifically asked about Safe Exist Assist and the door handles because they have gotten a lot of negative feedback from reviewers but again in my humble opinion the way those door handles work is how all door handles should have worked from day one. Why should I pull a lever toward me to exit the vehicle when the door opens away from me? That is just not ergonomically intelligent. I've also had numerous experiences with my current vehicle where my hands were full while attempting to enter the vehicle and I was forced to pull the door handles with just 1 finger and it is always a disastrous experience... from spilling drinks to dropping grocery bags or even glass bottles when my finger slipped off the handle during unsuccessful attempts, ...the horror stories go on. I thought people would have lost their minds with excitement when lexus released the NX with this feature and I was genuinely shocked to see how many negative reviews it got. Buying the NX is an open shut case for me ... (that door handle feature alone sold me on the car)... and EVERYTHING else I want out of a daily driver the NX "potentially" checks all of the boxes. My issue is that although I'm madly in love with the NX 450h+ because the plug in hybrid drivetrain is perfect for my use case, I refuse to buy an NX that doesn't have Mark Lev and although not a deal breaker like the mark lev option I REALLY REALLY want a full pano roof also.... and somehow SHOCKINGLY, despite being the most expensive version of the NX,Toyota simply does not offer any of those 2 options on the 450h+ currently.🙄
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
It is really surprising you can’t - I actually didn’t know you could get either ML or the pano roof on the NX until your comment LOL! And I agree with you on the F-Sport. For me personally I don’t want my compact luxury crossover to look like a race car and some of the F-Sport trims with the handling package make the ride more stiff and rigid which is a hard pass for me. I think most people are annoyed with the door handles because in the event your car battery or the key fob battery dies OR if there is any kind of issue with the system that causes it to stop working, only the driver’s door has a redundant physical release (they all do from the inside but only the driver door can be opened manually from the outside). It makes the every day safer but raises some concerns about emergency situations, I think. I totally agree also that the push to open is more intuitive from the inside too, and I actually really like that aspect of it. I think the ideal solution would be for them to build on the current setup but add a manual exterior release for all four doors that doesn’t require you to pry off a piece of the door handle to operate.

Hello! I actually just got back from a work trip where I had a Venza rental car and was drove it quite a bit for the three days I had it. My best friend has a Venza Limited also. I was actually thinking of a loaded Venza when I was first shopping because I wanted something more premium than a Rav but in the same size class with the hybrid power train. My two issues with the Venza are: 1. They’re not available at all. At least not brand new. And I wanted a fully loaded one and those just weren’t available at all new or used. 2. The Venza has gotten expensive. Especially for a loaded Limited with the stargaze roof and everything I was in the mid to high 40s. This NX was only about $8K more. For a Lexus that comes with the badge, and nicer interior and the Lexus dealer experience. Technology wise, the NX has a bigger center screen but otherwise they’re about equal on technology. The Venza gets a better digital gauge display, actually. I’ll also say, if you could do with the LE or XLE, I might go that way and save some money because the low trim Venza rental I had still had a lot of luxury touches (auto folding mirrors, sound deadening plastic shrouding around the windows, power steering column, power rear gate, and good sound even without JBL). And my best friend’s Venza Limited feels almost identical, badge aside, from my NX. Something else to know about the Venza. They just released the PHEV a few months back for other world markets. I don’t know if that will ever come stateside but if it does, you can bet it’ll be cheaper than the NX450H+ which is WAY too expensive in my book. Run flats are fine, not great but really not bad. I’m going to get some wear out of them since I “paid” for them with the car but they’ll be getting swapped out for Michelin Cross Climates as soon as they start to wear or before winter, whichever happens first.

It’s so luxurious, so refined, so quiet and if you’d consider a non-hybrid, the V6 is also absolutely phenomenal. The hybrid is too, of course. But the V6 is gone after this generation. Otherwise the NX is terrific and I think a much better use of your money than the Venza. Either one will last a few hundred thousand miles, though!

@@joshjamescars Many people have noted the engine in the Venza, like the Rav4, gets pretty loud at higher revs or quick acceleration off the line or passing on the highway for example. Did you notice a difference between the Venza and your NX is this regard? The Lexus has much more sound treatment baked in and presumably that is one reason it is much quiter overall including less engine noise. What are your thoughts and/or experience Venza vs NX?
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
@@rockinggator969 A few different answers here… The NX is loud at high revs but this is one of the downsides of Toyota’s hybrid system in general. Whether Venza, Sienna, Highlander, RX, ES, etc., it’s a tiny little 4-cylinder in there working really hard to move a big vehicle around. That’s why they’re so efficient. It’s a trade off. So unfortunately, it’s never going to be as smooth and refined as a V6 which has a smoother, quieter, and more even tone curve thats more pleasant to listen to and easier to tune out. A V6 is never working nearly as hard as the tiny little 4-cylinder has to. The Venza actually has very similar manners to the NX, though, and has more sound insulation than the Rav. The 22 Venza I had for a week in Phoenix had the same plastic shrouding around the windows and rubber gaskets in the door line as the NX and I found them to be very similar in terms of overall refinement. The Venza is made in Japan and there is a difference there in build quality and overall refinement I can attest to having two Japan made Toyotas and the NX being made in Canada. With that said, we test drove the brand new 2023 CR-V hybrid and that was FAR more refined than even the NX because unlike in Toyota’s hybrid system (parallel hybrid) the CR-V’s is mostly a serial hybrid where the engine isn’t always directly in the driveline like it is in Toyota’s. So, what that means is the CR-V uses the engine as a generator to power the electric motor but the electric motor is what’s moving the wheels and thus in the driveline. So you’re not getting all the vibration and harshness from the gas engine coming through the pedals and steering column most of the time. That’s where a lot of the actual NVH comes from in Toyota hybrids. It’s really astounding how good the CR-V is. If NVH is your biggest concern, I say CR-V all the way. The CR-V also has advanced active noise cancellation and the Sport Touring trim has resonance reducing wheels that use foam resonators fixed to the inside of the wheel cavity cancel out the noise from poor pavement. You give up some efficiency but that’s again, the trade off with Toyota’s hybrid system. Now, if I were to buy a Venza it would have to be a fully loaded Limited because I need a moonroof and the big screen. At that point, you’re around $47-$48K for a Venza. That’s just too close to what I paid for my NX ($53), so for me that counts out the Venza full stop. However, if you were to get a base LE venza or XLE (neither of which get a moonroof) then I would absolutely go that way.

Hi Josh, I've driven an NX 350 and feel the car is a bit bumpy since it's smaller than the Rx350. Did this car feel smooth for a long trip as compare to the smooth feel of the Rx 350? Thanks
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
It really depends which one you’ve driven and are interested in. The F-Sport and F-Sport handling of both the NX and RX are quite rigid. Bigger wheels and lower profile tires will make the ride more bumpy on either car and that’s where everyone is going. The run flats that Lexus puts on the NX stock also are terrible so a lot can/could be fixed with better tires. The new RX has moved away from the super smooth 3.5 V6 too in favor of the turbo which is a total dealbreaker for me. The size of this car for me isn’t an issue on longer trips but for 8+ hours I’m taking my 4Runner. Also because most NXs don’t come with a spare tire anymore.

Excellent review, I'm waiting for mine. How do you feel the cabin in comparison to the RAV4 Prime? Are pretty much the same in space?
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
The NX is considerably smaller inside, especially the rear seat and cargo area. It feels like it’s almost a full class down from the Rav. The Rav is so boxy and upright (it’s 3 inches taller than the NX) and so the windows are much bigger and more square so it makes the inside feel more airy and its taller exterior means a bigger feeling interior even though they’re about the same in footprint. The NX is more coupe-like and has a lower, sportier stance; you really see the difference inside. The NX won’t do much for hauling anything substantial around. For us that’s okay because the 4Runner is basically a box on wheels. But if interior space is a concern, I’d go and see one in person to make sure it’s going to work for you.
