To be fair, the Princess suspension really soaked up the bumps. Didn't handle badly for a big car of its time either.

All the other cars go off road at the end too thus showing that it was the driver's presence of mind not the car itself that gave him the advantage.

As proven by James May, this car is one of the most reliable British Leyland cars made. Also, it looks amazing, I wish I could get one here in the states.

True enough, however the original drawings seldom made it to the production models, due to the interference of bean counters. So what were initially, exciting cutting edge designs, often turned out to become lumbering loppy dogs, manufactured with sub standard materials. We should have been better, MUCH better!

Ah yes, the famous Austin Princess off-roader. Actually though a friend's dad had one as a company car and we were pretty jealous at the time.

Leyland (Morris) Marina, everybody's favorite company car. Usually company cars are bare-bones versions of four-door sedans because of lower costs. Especially company cars that are issued to public sector employees for business purposes only, through their fleet management departments (with fleet management policy manuals, paperwork and audits to go along with them).
@garydunn303710 жыл бұрын
We used to sell these back in the 1970's and although we never had any complaints about reliability and so on. I just did not like the styling, it may have been called a Princess, but it certainly wasn't beautiful. Back then, not many BL and Austin/Morris cars were very good in the styling department. Come to think of it, the cars from Ford and Vauxhall were not much better.

Someone in our village got one through work, I’m sure it was maroon or dark green. It drew a crowd, it just looked so different back then. Few jokes about it being a wedge or a tyre chock for Concorde, lol

They came good later on but early Princesses had bad issues with driveshafts and gearboxes and the workforce was often on strike. I doubt many middle management Germans traded in their Audi 100s, Opel Rekords and BMW 5 series for a Princess.

Ah the pungent aroma of vinyl seats on a hot summer day, with no air con to cool your temper in the many traffic jams that we would invariably encounter on our journey to our holiday destination. I remember dad having to cover the seats with blankets, to stop yourself getting third degree burns from the almost melting seats. Ah yes, the charm of 70's motoring!
