The bit about the coach comparing plumbers and athletes remind me of what Harry Redknapp (soccer manager) once said: "I signed a player once," he said, before adding: "Top player. Fantastic player. "We'd done the deal, then he wanted a goal bonus. He was a striker. I said: 'What do you think we're paying you 50 grand a week for, to miss them?'"
@ericwilliams18455 жыл бұрын
Babcock brought something here that turned the tides quicker than we thought it would, turning a bottom of the NHL team into a playoff team in one year. That next step though has eluded this group and him. Time perhaps for a change.

I know lots of people who do their jobs well everyday, not because they like their bosses, but because if they don't they will be FIRED. However, in the wonderful world of sport we have this thing called a contract, which guarantees players get paid x amount regardless of how well they play. Don't know any plumbers who get hired, and are given a 6 year contract that guarantees they get paid x amount no matter how well they do whatever it is that plumbers are paid to do. They don't even get a one year contract. They get a pay check every two weeks, IF they've done the work - and not before they've done the work (no signing bonus for plumbers). I likewise know many people who go to work everyday, not because they have a boss they like, a boss who cheers them on or whatever, but because they have something called PRIDE. Even if they hate their boss, even if they don't have a boss, i.e. they work for themselves, they take pride in doing the best they can do each day. But then they don't get paid a minimum of $700,00 or a maximum of $14M - maybe those numbers relegate pride in a job well done to a place of irrelevance.

Chuck Noll was asked why he didn’t give pregame speeches His response “If I have to motivate you before a game you don’t belong here” One thing I think Steve overlooks is how people react once they have all the money they want. Generally people have a tendency to take it easy once finances are set and good. Nashville has that problem now, it’s why they are so erratic. Tampa has it too. Complacency sets in. I think Toronto has it now too. You need your players to be happy and hungry.

If you want to keep blaming Babcock for listless performances, I offer this: Watching him coach the Red Wings, they had bad starts for a while, maybe even over a season or two. But, they eventually figured it out. Why? With guys like Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Lidstrom the dressing room, the rest of the team fell in line. Who is the Leafs' leadership core? There's your issue.

I'm not on the fire Babcock wagon, but this team hasn't been able to defend since the lockout...the 2004 lockout. No matter what players/coaches. I watch other teams play and I just marvel at how they play, whether they are shittier or better. They just have better positioning in their own zone. Maybe the Penguins model of firing your coach and the interim boosting a slumping star studded team will work...maybe it won't, but if they keep this up...you have to sadly.
@babayaga53925 жыл бұрын
Boston doesn't do well at making opposing players invisible. They know that if you press and play rough on Marner and Matthews, even a little bit, they won't put up a fight. You can even add Nylander to that list. This is why the Leafs have not been able to beat the Bruins in the playoffs.

Players should all get paid the same amount as a base salary, and then get extra pay for all the goal and assists ( or saves for a goalie ) that they score. That would really motivate players to perform better. But if you pay them a huge amount of money before the hockey season, then that just kills all motivation. They just feel obligated to play hard and to score because of the amount of money they've been given. Doubt that would ever happen though...

Literally your last video, you provided some nuanced reasons why Babcock isn't going anywhere, anytime soon. But one game later, he's lost the team? And comparing this to the last days of Randy?!?
