I just chose the V30 over the Pixel 3 and I do not regret that decision one bit. LG makes great products and their use cases really lean towards content creators in a way that is unmatched across the industry. I use the HiFi recording to record music at my church at point blank range and the audio is not blown out and muffled. Wide angle is still a beast. The manual mode is one of the most feature rich without being too difficult to use and the battery life is wonderful. But the lack of advertising and previously poorly timed launches really put them behind. And the cameras while great are not the best in auto mode so yes they're behind in some areas but I haven't left LG since the V series came out and I've had the V10, V20, and now V30. Also I applaud you for being one of the few tech reviewers who doesn't automatically fall into the "it's not that good if it isn't popular" camp.

LG v40s have been selling at Best Buy for $700 dollars (USD) unlocked since last Monday 12/17. I purchased my LG v40 last Monday from them and this review played a major role in my decision. My previous phones was a Samsung note 8 and a s7-edge. Wife has nothing but bad luck with Samsung phones failing shortly after warranty expires and Samsung has done nothing to compensate or help out. Both her S7-edge and S8+ failed prematurely, only a few months after warranty and they wanted over $500 to repair her S8+ (motherboard failure). I gave her my note 8 and have been extremely happy with my v40 since. Btw, I've also subscribed because I appreciate your honesty and telling it how it is. Keep up the good work.

Without any adjustments I get decent photos and videos, I admit those are seldom amazing looking - but they are never bad. And I've almost never made any adjustments - and I love the video and sound. I always use an Otter Box cases so I have escaped the fingerprint and grip issues. (I've also had every one of the phones drop and hit the cement or floor inside those cases, with no ill effect).

The biggest thing that no one talks about, and seems small, but is a huge deal is, the HAPTIC FEEDBACK. Completely agree, the tactile feel and feedback on LG phones is second to none. Incredible video and very on point as usual Ben. As V30 owner, I agree with you on everything. They're massively underrated and I'd say they've been they dark horse on the smartphone race over the last 2 years (speaking about the V family). In my opinion they are the most well rounded phones in the market, not the best but more of a jack of all trades that reach where others don't. The design is superb, flush and clean, so is the quality of the phone itself. Coming from a Nexus 6, I had never used any other UI but stock Android, but the one on the LG felt really user-friendly and very easy to learn and get used to. I bought a refurbished V30 for work and in 2 weeks I decided it would be my daily driver. For my work (real estate) a wide-angle lens was perfect, having better results than other camera phones and even than real digital cameras, DSLR, and so, without the need of carrying around a camera or needing a professional photographer. To me this phone is almost perfect except for 2 things, one as you said it's the battery. When I bought it, I could get 6 hours of screen-on-time and still have 10 or 15% left of battery, which was a lot more than the 3:30-4 hours that I could get on my Nexus if lucky. Now the battery has lost it a bit and 4 or 4:30 hours is more likely. I think that there's only one flaw, which is a 3400 mAh battery.

I think that LG is in general a very underrated brand when it comes to smartphones, but as a big LG fan, and smartphone photography fan, the Huawei P20 Pro and the Note 9 have the best cameras this year. However price wise, LG is definitely a great phone. Just like Samsung they drop their prices quickly. But Samsung is still relatively expensive where I live compared to LG, especially since Samsung started to push the OLED screens and curved screens more. They don't drop their prices as fast as they used to. PS: Double tapping the screen is one of my favourite features on LG phones. I wished that it was an industry standard.

Thanks for the review. I think the V40 is a very good phone from everything I've seen but LG needs to go further with their flagship. As you mentioned, the battery isn't bad but they should have put in a bigger battery given the physical size of the phone. The cameras are very good but they still have work to do to compete with the likes of Apple, Huawei and the Google Pixel. What I really don't get is why this phone didn't come out of the box with Android Pie. As an existing LG G6 owner, I know that LG does not have a good track record for updating their phones - it took them way too long to update the G6 to Android Oreo. So when do they plan on updating Android on their V40? My guess is as good as anyone's which would be sometime next week to possibly next summer. I'm giving the V40 serious consideration for my upgrade but it's not worth the $949 that is being asked for it unlocked here in the US (I have prepaid service as carrier contracts have gotten way too expensive). So I'll have to wait for it to drop to around $700. There's a lot to like about this phone.....headphone jack with quad DAC, expandable memory, great screen, newest Snapdragon processor, 6gb of ram......but $949 is too much.

This is a great review man, I liked the intro! Note, the app tray (7:20) is button press AND swipe up. I've had the V40 for 24 hours. My only complaints so far are how small the notifications & time are in the notification bar. I'd like to see them be about 40% bigger (then they would match the size on my previous phone, the Samsung S6) Also, the notch is only hidden in native LG apps, so I had to download Nacho Notch to hide the notch in all apps, but it drains the battery unfortunately, not sure how much. Like you mentioned, the double tap feature is awesome! One more thing, yes, better battery life would be nice, but then it would be a bulkier phone (like the Note 9, yikes). I like the light, sleek design. It's already been a little challenging switching to a phone this big, mainly the way it feels in my pocket. Any bigger would be too much. I own LG G6 and really like the phone , infact this was a phone with which my screen time almost doubled. LG has fixed the selfie cam , sound and display with 2018 editions. I shot a small segment of a concert toggling between the two lenses and it came out great , with the third optical zoom lens the guitar solo could have been captured better. So i believe when one talks about the video quality and flexibility. The manual mode on camera is great. Add to everything the ip68 ratings that LG offers even on budget phone like Q series. The only thing that would keep me buying V40 is the low light camera quality for still photography and lack of quick software updates ( i dont have issue with the UI). LG cameras are not as sharp and refined as Samsung or Apple. I think LG is still one more iteration away from creating the perfect content creators phone. Awaiting G8 or V50....

LG needs to invest more. Bigger battery, push updates faster or show support to older phones example Aplle software update support their older phone

No they don't. They need to keep cutting corners to keep their prices down.

great info, i'm really excited for the UK release. listening critically using headphones ... sounds like mildly aggressive noise reduction has been applied to your intro recorded with the lav mic .... did the phone do this or was it applied later in editing? ✌️

I would love to check out the V40 for myself, but LG decided not to sell it on Canada. And the cost of importing it from the US would make it more expensive than buying a Samsung Note 9 from my local Best Buy.

holy shit. I have an LG g6 (thinking about upgrading to the V40) and I didn't know about the knock code until now. I thought it was some gimmick so never looked into it but it is really cool and i'm gonna use it for my lock screen from now on!

Great Video, I agree on the battery life. I have the V40 Upgraded from the V20. I love all the features that the V40 offers, You've taught me a few things that I didn't know about some of the features.

Ever since my LG G3 I've been an LG fan currently using a V30+ as my daily and loving it .. I've had a Note and S and iPhone but I always come back to LG, my first Android was an LG Ally.. although I love my Essential ph1 and I'd buy a Pixel if I could afford one.. I always end up with an LG for some reason??

Awesome video!!! If I buy in Hong Kong, are there available unlocked V40s already that I can use outside your country?

I have been using an LG v40, LG v20 and Pixel 3xl. I use the v40 most, v20 second and Pixel last for so many reasons. Mainly the UI that LG uses. I miss the volume buttons on the back like the LG V10. Knock on rules. The v40s weight is the lowest of all three, and has the same battery life as the Pixel 3 xl. Even though the battery is smaller.

I, for one, was deeply saddened why I found out this week that they are getting out of the phone business. I literally shed a tear. When I find a good phone, I also buy backups for that device. It all started for me when Sprint gave me an Optimus G for extending my contract with them for 2 years. I hadn't planned to change companies, anyway, so I got the phone. Then I bought a second one, then 3 more on E-bay. I also used 7 Optimus G pro's, Optimus G pro2 (which was never released in the U.S.) Also 3 V10's, 2 G3's, 5 V20's, a V35thinQ, and most recently a V40thinQ. I even bought an LG FX, which runs on Firefox OS. I also have many other phones by Samsung, Nokia, Sony, UmiDigi, Hauwei, Blackphone2, Motorola, 2 LeEco Max 2. See why it's so bittersweet for me to see LG stop making phones. I was in the process of getting an LG Velvet. But I really have my eye on a Motorola Edge + Great review as usual, Ben. Good Morning from Texas.

I had an LG G Flex 2 that took beautiful 4k in 2015. I bought a Samsung A-71 a few days ago thinking the video would be as good or better but it sucks bad - horrible overhsharpening in video and stills. I'm going to get one of these too since they are 300 new with warranty.

ben's gadget reviews - did you say you did or did not have to use an outside app to make the videos? I listened twice and it sounded like there was an app but was expensive. If you did an app, which one did you use? I also am looking for a phone upgrade that still retains the headphone jack. Does this phone still have the headphone jack? Thank you.

If you turn on Data Saver AND BATTERY SAVER on the LG V40 then that will greatly help you extend battery life and get thru a full day. The battery lasts pretty long to only be 3300 ma/h. The V series phones are their flagship model and should have at least come with 3800 to 4000 m a/h hrs battery.
@bensgadgetreviews6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. But I worry about what that would do to my notifications. But I’ll give it a try. Thank you.

In spite of the bootloop issue on my G4, i still bought a G5. I truly loved the wide angle but the battery was a downer and the screen on that unit was dim. I skipped the G6 and bought a HTC U11+. I'm considering the V40 mainly because of the wide-angle but really I'm not very impressed with the imaging algorithm of LG phones. If Xiaomi offers wide-angle next year then LG is out of my list.

I brilliantly detailed and informative presentation. I've been drawn to this unit since it debuted, and changing handsets isn't something that I can take lightly in this part of the globe. I live in India, and LG hasn't released it in this country yet, so I'll have to see how much it costs here. I just have a couple of queries: 1. How would you reckon this display quality compared to Note 9? 2. Is the audio quality through headphone really audiophile-grade? Comparable to a dedicated Sony or Fiio personal MP3 player? Thanks in advance for your answer.
@bensgadgetreviews6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Diganta. I would say the Note 9 still has a better panel in that it gets brighter so better for outdoor use. Otherwise LG's panel is near flawless. 2: the V40 has a quad DAC so the audio output should be excellent. I must admit I'm not an audiophile so I can't quite say for sure. But I've seen other audiophiles praise LG's DAC before. . Sorry I cant fully answer all your questions. Ben
