i was able to get all the way up to right before minute 5:30 (when you got the "draw your pattern" prompt after the factory reset), however mine doesn't give me the option of drawing a pattern, it defaults to using the same google account previously used. How do I get past this?

Then repeat the steps. Don't lose hope. Again change the screen lock and hard reset the device. You'll surely get the verify pin/verify pattern screen.
