LGBTQ+ Sci Fi Models Workshop

In February 2023 we created characters based on descriptions from LGBTQ+ Science Fiction. Liverpool University's Sci Fi Archive is the largest in Europe! (over 35,000 Books). Anyone can arrange to go and visit the archive at the Sydney Jones Library!
Using wooden mannequins that are often used as a drawing tool for art students Louise Waller and our workshop attendees brought to life characters from LGBTQ+ Science Fiction using a range of fabric, decorative materials and glue.
This is a short video that will hopefully inspire to create your own characters at home! Don't forget to tag us on social media and show us what you have made by using the hashtag #VGMatHome.
Some inspiration that people used during the event or was discussed around our workshop table is as follows:
Frankenstein - In general sci-fi is thought to start with Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, as it deals with the creation of a human & can be read as a body transformation story.
Our Lady of the Flowers by Jean Genet - Genet influenced the likes of David Bowie (androgyne).
Desire in The Sandman comics by Neil Gaiman is portrayed as androgenous or non-binary.
The original She-Ra cartoon and Sailor Moon have had a big influence on the look of queer sci-fi.
Kieron Gillian also introduced the first gay character in the Star Wars universe (Doctor Aphra)

Extension activity
Louise suggested people visit Tate Liverpool to see the Turner prize as Sin Wai Kin is a non binary artist who was nominated for the Turner Prize 2022 whose work is heavily influenced by Sci Fi and Speculative Fiction.
