Still, I wouldn't get it for myself yet due to lack of games. Besides they're probably going to release updated version in a year or two. That's the thing about the Vive vs the Oculus. The Oculus says it's VR, and you do see it through your eyes and it shows a lot, but to me the Vive seems more VR cause you can move around, use the hand controls to interact with items and look around with the headset, it looks like it feels more realistic and interactive.

I surely can't afford to be an early-adopter, but a couple of the Google Cardboard experiences with a cheap box w/straps were enough to make me take a good long look at my credit card. Even with the poor mans cardboard experience, I was amazed how much you find yourself lost in the experience, that it becomes your world. Kind of like how you're really aware of the 3D in a 3D movie for a bit until you start to forget it's even there (thankfully).

Why haven't they simply implemented floor pads where you can press forward, backwards, left, or right with your foot to walk so that games could be more immersive? All of this "teleporting" seems redundant and is hardly different from what you can do on a Wii. I've seen the treadmills also for VR gaming but obviously find their production very impractical in terms of how expensive and large the final product will be.
@LGR8 жыл бұрын
Floor pads or any other movement with a controller like that are THE easiest way to get motion sickness. It's just an awful idea and doesn't work. I've heard better results with treadmills, but as you said it's hugely expensive and hugely.. huge.

Jacob Cummins This was exactly what I was referring to in the original post, I've seen them play Fallout 4 on that thing and it's amazing and I would get so much use out of it considering that I never fast travel in Bethesda games. I will definitely get an improved version of it (because one will inevitably come out) but my motive with the floor pads was to suggest a quick and simple solution.

+Lazy Game Reviews also because you're not physically moving you still get motion sick.
@LGR8 жыл бұрын
+Crunk Playa69 Well, motion sickness in real life doesn't work the same as it does in VR. In reality, your inner ear senses movement and tries to keep you from barfing. In VR, if you're not physically moving along with what your eyes are seeing, then it screws you up badly. I don't get motion sick in real life with rides or boats or car rides, but in VR I do in a heartbeat if the movement isn't done correctly.

So far I'm super impressed with this one, the Oculus is a bit more novel and experimental. They seemed to put a lot of effort into this model, adding modular parts is also a nice touch. I kind of wish there was more of a natural movement instead of the teleporting. I'm sure you can physically walk around, but sometimes space is more valuable than equipment.

One thing I didn't know (this may be different on the Vive vs. the Rift) is that your headset and your display need to be connected to the same graphics card, which if you're running an SLI/Crossfire setup means you don't get to use a single HDMI port on each card. I fixed that with a $15 DisplayPort to HDMI cable, but if your headset just showed up in the mail and you want to get it fired up it can be a real buzzkill.

Motion controls by themselves were only destined to be the fad that they were with the last-gen consoles but dual near-perfect 1:1 motion sticks combined with a VR headset has the potential to find them a practical long term home for specific genres. It almost seems perfect for god games like Populous or SimCity. Or a completely standalone game based on the Chao Garden from Sonic Adventure 2. Or a Godzilla game where you can destroy cities with the swing of your hand and fight the military and other kaiju. Hell, even games like Myst could find new life now in VR.

For glasses you can pop out the round knobs on the side and twist them to make more room for glasses. It's easy to miss.
@LGR8 жыл бұрын
Seems you've misunderstood my problem. Those knobs only adjust the distance/depth of the lenses, it does not make the actual physical headset any wider. My problem is the headset itself does not fit the _width_ of my glasses, it has nothing to do with depth.

I have a question though. What is up with the trackpads on the controller? What are they there for and how do they work? Don't they work like the steam controllers pads/regular touchpads? Because looking at them that's what they seem to be. But then why doesn't anyone think about using them to emulate the left stick of a controller? It works just fine on the steam controller and I constantly use them for such things. And I think it's a better and less unimmersive option than teleporting around most times (though the teleporting mechanic works really well in games like Budget Cuts, too.) Still it got me thinking if it even is the same kind of trackpad.
@LGR8 жыл бұрын
About the same as the Steam controller, yes. However, what you're talking about is the worst thing in VR. Moving without your body moving, or without some kind of a game of reference like a cockpit, results in instant motion sickness for most people. It throws your sense of balance off and makes everything nauseating.
@SimplyMavAgain8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the reply. Well I'm almost immune to motion sickness. So I hope that's gotta be an option for some games. Really looking forward to games like Elite Dangerous in VR though.

got to demo this at my brothers house on a recent vacation and it's awesome! That's hardly objective but it really is and you really can see how it's the future (as predicted in lawnmower man) so if you have the money, time and space it is so worth it otherwise wait. Personally I don't have the space to dedicate to this plus I want to see how the VR market develops but it was really fun and like I said it is worth it if you have all the necessary resources to dedicate to it. Also, like in lawnmower man I feel markedly smarter after using it along with homicidal tendencies!

I'm thinking about getting a VR headset for Christmas, but I'm not sure whether to get one on PC or on a console. If I get one on PC, I will have to buy a new computer for a hefty cost, and still will have to put in a lot of money for a headset. If I get it on console, there's a strong chance I'll only be able to get it on the Playstation 4 by the end of the year, as I don't think a VR or AR headset will arrive on Xbox One in time before the holidays. Also, I've been switching towards the Xbox One, because the Playstation 4 doesn't have enough memory and has no support for external hard drives, where as the Xbox one does support external hard drives and is currently releasing a 2TB slim console this August. Unless I can somehow get 2TB of disk space on a Playstation 4, I won't be able to switch back as finding a 2TB hard drive for the PS4 is not very likely where I'm from. Can anyone help me out with this?

Everybody's complaining about no games/shit games for VR... Meanwhile, in the real world store.steampowered.com/search/?sort_by=Reviews_DESC&vrsupport=101%2C102 If you cannot afford it or are not interested in it - don't buy it. The technology will get cheaper and more accessible as the user base grows. Those claiming there is no user base - look at popularity of Gear VR and PSVR, or at just how much money the porn industry is starting to make off this technology. Oh, it's only a gimmick you say? So were smartphones before Blackberry/Palm. Touchscreens before the iPhone. Electric cars before Tesla/Toyota/BYD. Action camera's before GoPro/Woodman Labs. Bluetooth until every major phone manufacturer adopted it. Even computers themselves were seen as a gimmick by most people in the early days due to their cost and size. War helped reinforce the importance of computers to those who could properly comprehend their significance. People who dismiss something as a gimmick without trying it, or just out of a desire to see it fail; are stupid.
