I was 11 when this came out. It is the first game I remember buying on launch day, not because I was looking forward to it, but because I happened to be in the store and happened to have a bit of money in my pocket. Instead of the usual candy, I would sometimes save up my weekly allowance to buy a game. It took me 3 years to defeat the game and I loved every moment of it. Where did that patience go? I can't just sit down and do the same thing over and over again, like I could back then. I had the patience of a saint, now I have the patience of a primed grenade...

My brother and I played the crap out of this as kids, and one of our favorite pastimes was getting a group of Modokon, slapping one, and watching the resulting slap-war. Which.. usually killed a few of them. I didn't realize how much I missed this game. I think it was one of the few harder games that actually kept our attention span.

Tobi Foxworth You were lost, and now you are found.... go forth my child, play this damn game.. cry, die, and die again; for you have a righteous calling, to GET THE GOOD ENDING!!! And in betweens time (between rage quits) you should play Psychonauts if you haven't already, much easier and the humor in both games are kind of sort of similar in a distant weird way.

Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exodus are some of my favorite games of all time. And Abe's Exodus improved upon somethings, like allowing you to save without checkpoints (but if you forgot to save you'd want to smash your head against the wall). I'd always take on the challenge of finding and saving every last sweet, hidden Mudoken. The puzzle aspect was awesome. I've been dying for a new Oddworld with new puzzles to solve. I'd even love to try new and tasty, but I don't have any playstation console. If I even had the original playstation, I'd be playing Oddysee and Exodus. I'm so glad you reviewed this, I'd actually been curious about your opinion on these since they are as I said, 2 of my favorite.

I remember buying this gem for my play station in a used ps game store. It's demo was on the demo disc for ps. I immediately fell in love with Abe's Oddworld. First I got the bad ending, then I saved enough mudokons for the good ending. It was back then with that torturing checkpoint save system a real PAIN. Friends came together and watched me playing it. It was the predecessor of online playthroughs. But I did it. I saved all of them. And it was a huge achivement for a 13 years old kid. The game's athmosphere is incredible. I still love this game today. It is a part of my childhood and me. I loved how it isn't about mindlessly killing enemies but it is about save others and planning carefully every step. My big brother called this game: "that stupid whistl game." He didn't understood what I loved in it.

This was one of my favorite games as a kid, my dad would get so aggravated at it, he would leave the room and I would pick up the controller and attempt to try. It was the first time I ever saw a game that felt so incredibly otherworldly and artistic. I never found it that hard, but probably because I had grown so accustomed to it. One of my favorite parts were when he rediscovered himself after he escaped the factory.

I remember reading a walkthrough of this in Gamepro back in the 90s, and thinking "What a quirky game!" Glad I'd never tried to play it, because of the frustrating gameplay LGR has showcased, I'd have absolutely hated it. In fact, I would today, because I don't go "tearing my nonexistent hair out hard" games. Still, props for those who do, and gave this beautiful looking game a chance.

I miss when real artists made games. Not AAA money-hungry studios. Ars Technica did an interview with the creator of Oddworld, he was a real artist and in it for the passion, not the money. I also replayed it recently and did not find the game anywhere near as difficult as LGR says. I saved all 99 without too much trouble. Challenging at times but not enough to be frustrating.

I could never get on with the PC versions though so I gave them to LaserFrog :D

New n Tasty is certainly an updated version, and will hopefully bring a new generation in on this awesome franchise, but the gritty corridors of the factory, dusty plains of the deserts, all those awesomely detailed screens of digital art are lost, and replaced with really forgettable screens! I'll take this childhood nostalgia over fully 3D abe any day!

I seriously would recommend the remake to anybody who is deciding to play this. The remake fixes a lot of problems, and rids of the frustration factor. It also enchants the environment and atmosphere. The remake does a lot of great things like removing the square based movement (making platforming a whole less aggregating). It removes the grid based map system (if I remember correctly) making exploring more smooth. And, well, it's just the same but better.

Outside of some of the more devilish secrets most of the normal path in this and Exoddus are more methodically enjoyable rather than annoying (as I am that type of slow paced person). But I do recall some of Paranomia Temple being particularly gruelling when I played through it again, and the screen with the swinging boulders and bats which you needed to backtrack through a couple of times was maybe the nastiest single screen of all considering you had to do all 2-3 passes without dying.

Abe's Oddysee is better player with a controler than with a keyboard, however there's an odd issue, pun intended, about using my Logic3 PS2 to PS3/PC adapter. Mapping all buttons is nice an easy and it makes it more comfortable selecting the actions, my problem has to do with the fact of the game recognizing the left analog stick and not the D-Pad, and in a game like Oddworld, doing some platform with an analog stick is a complete pain. I'm not sure if it's the Steam version which has the control input file broken or something, but I haven't found any solution online. And it's because of that that I haven't finished this gorgeous-looking game.
