Even though the english lyrics shown here in the video somewhat represent what is being said, the official translation by Keith Bosley shows the lyrical beauty of Finlandia pretty well. It always brings tears to my eyes when the singing starts. Finland, behold, thy daylight now is dawning, the threat of night has now been driven away. The skylark calls across the light of morning, the blue of heaven lets it have its way, and now the day the powers of night is scorning: thy daylight dawns, O Finland of ours! Finland, arise, and raise towards the highest thy head now crowned with mighty memory. Finland, arise, for to the world thou criest that thou hast thrown off thy slavery, beneath oppression´s yoke thou never liest. Thy morning´s come, O Finland of ours!

the lyrics were written over 40 years afterwards, during which time Finland had had it's first parliamentary elections under russian rule, then gained independence, fought civil war, experienced other political turmoil and gradual stabilization and democratic development, and then winter war started and the lyrics were written at the end of that war. they're good lyrics and do reflect the spirit of the music and its original intent but often people misunderstand the historical context. reminds me of the star-spangled banner, which was written in 1814 (during the war of 1812); people generally think the lyrics refer to the war of independence (and the surely can, and practically do but not originally) but they were written about a certain battle in the war of 1812.

I'm African-American and, to my knowledge, not Finnish at all. We American Christians know this tune as the hymn "Be Still, My Soul"; the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, whose album my mother owned, also sang this tune as "On Great Lone Hills". We chose "Be Still, My Soul" as a hymn for Mom's funeral in 2006. Later during the service, the pianist, an Afr-Am man, let loose with a fuller treatment of "Finlandia", and I started weeping. Guess what? I'm listening to this video now--and I'm weeping again! I heard or read a story, decades ago, that during the Russian occupation, Finns would go to a concert, attended by Russian guards, and would leave at the concert's "end". When the Russians were gone, the Finns would sneak back to the concert hall to listen to "Finlandia", a censored work at the time!

The usual idiocy: NO - FINNISH MUSIC DOES NOT NEED TO BE PERFORMED BY FINNS TO BE PLAYED CORRECTLY!!! MUSIC TRANSCENDS NATIONALITY
@mikeprevost86506 жыл бұрын
He may be referring to the vocals on the Hymni---which aren't part of Sibelius' original composition. Chorales from other countries never get the pronunciation exactly correct.

Elizabeth Sherpa the BBC Symphony also has a fine version of Finlandia, that they did as a tribute to Finland's independence centennial. But, they do have a Finnish conductor, Sakari Oramo. 😉

Myra Borisute - It’s true that some music is that well done that it transcends nationality and becomes something everyone can relate to but this piece belongs to the Finnish people as a symbol of our struggle. Everytime you perform it you are honouring Finland and the Finnish people

@robertnotssje This song was takes a finnish mentality, (finnish person) to play it correctly. This was composed by a finnish writer, for finnish people and was ment to describe what it feels to be finnish. No matter what your liberal opinion might be, but you, or anyone, who hasnt atleast lived in Finland, doesnt know the culture and history, has no fucking clue what this song means. When I listen this song, I feel proud, mix of happiness and sadness, patriotism, I might shred a tear. When you listen at this song, you might get shivers and think that its a masterpiece. Its more than that. Its Finland's national epic. Please stop.

playing this was literally the best as a violinist. even tho it was an arrangement and a youth orchestra without a bassoon, one oboe, one clarinet, only two horns, 3 percussionists, and one bass, it still sounded really epic thanks to our amazing conductor. we didn't have a choir, but i really wish they recorded it bc it was really epic

Hi Peter, many years ago I served in the Dutch Merchant Navy, went ashore at a certain port in Finland and at a dance met and fell in love with a beautiful Finnish lady, I will stop at that point, as what I have written is part of a book I am attempting to write about my time as marine engineer officer.

Finlandia is a deep piece of music, also broad and high. It talks about our noble aspirations, the ideal homeland of our dreams, where life will reveal its true meaning. The winds, chords, percussions, all imitate sounds of nature in a sublime way, and the choir brings everything to a climax.

By far the greatest and most inspired performance of finlandia I have ever heard!!! So true to the Finnish soul , while yet transending all ethnic and nationalistic boundaries and speaking to the hopes and aspirations of all men who desire freedom!!! The interactive placement of the chorus with the audience was a stroke of genius !!! Which even yielded more power to this epic performance!!! Take note ! This is how you break in a new music Hall !!!

Oi, Suomi, katso, sinun päiväs' koittaa, Yön uhka karkoitettu on jo pois, Ja aamun kiuru kirkkaudessa soittaa, Kuin itse taivahan kansi sois'.

Wonderful and evocative piece of music, perfectly capturing triumph over centuries of struggle.

Remember this piece and others were to commemorate the extraordinary heroism of Finland’s defiance and defence of their homelands against overwhelming odds fitting therefore this should set them apart from other nations, the music is awe inspiring.

The description of the video says that the orchestra playing is the Radio-Symphony-Orchestra-of-the- Bavarian Broadcasting ....?!🤔 What is true now ? 🤔 Jukka-Pekka Saraste often conducts this orchestra in Munich. Maybe he had invented them to Helsinki for this occassion ?! 🤔 Maybe someone knows for sure ?!
