Leonid Kharitonov & the Alexandrov Red Army Choir - "The Cliff on the Volga River" ("Utyos", with English Subtitles)
The concert in Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, 1965.
This song is about the fate of the 17th century Russian rebel, Stepan Razin. The lyrics were written in 1864 by novelist A.Navrotsky who was also a member of Narodnaya Volya (Russian: Народная Воля), a secret revolutionary organization perhaps best known for assassinating Tsar Alexander II on March 13, 1881. The song was an anthem for revolutionaries of the late 19th and early 20th century in Russia.

этот первый состав хора, который впервые спел "Вставай, страна огромная" - они были еще совсем молодыми , когда пели эту песню,прошли с Красной Армией до Берлина, пели в Берлине , а потом записали "Вставай, страна огромная" как фондовое, образцовое исполнение. Знаю об этом от своего деда-ветерана ВОВ-хор Александрова приезжал в Уральский военный округ с концертами. Это я к тому, что по иному тогдашний состав хор Александрова народные песни петь не мог. Сейчас так не споют - кишка тонка

There are many parts of the song where Leonid actually overpowers the orchestra and even at the end he even almost overpowers the choir as well! I don’t know any of today’s operatic singers that can even come close to Leonid’s power. May one of the best operatic Bass singer rest in peace

Unfortunately, you have omitted Ukraine which was attacked first in Crimea in 2014, then from several directions in 2022, and is being constantly hit by rockets by the army of one of the countries you mentioned. From February 2022 to June 2023, the UN has recorded in Ukraine over 25,000 civilian casualties including 1,624 children, 532 of whom died, with 1,092 injured. This is why I no longer enjoy any of the songs performed by singers wearing the Russian uniform.

A song about the leader of the peasant uprising Stepan Razin: Peasant War of 1667-1671 In the battle of Simbirsk on October 1 (11), 1670, Stepan Razin was seriously wounded and three days later, after another unsuccessful assault on the Simbirsk Kremlin, together with a group of Cossacks loyal to him returned to the Don. After recovering from his injury, Razin began to gather an army for a new campaign. However, the top of the Don Cossacks and the well-to-do (well-to-do) Cossacks, fearing on the one hand the increased influence of Razin, and on the other - the consequences for the Don Cossacks as a result of the defeat of the uprising, gathered a detachment led by the ataman of the Don army Kornil Yakovlev, on April 14 (24), 1671 attacked Razin's headquarters in Kagalnitsky town. В плане культуры должна быть национальная идея государства: добро, дружба народов, справедливость, и т.д. И это должно быть повсеместно там, где работает государство народ своими населением. При этом не борясь с другими альтернативами. Сейчас же мы видим засилие «эстрады» и прочей безвкусицы, но «государственная» национальная культура практически отсутствует, а она должна главенствовать. Поэтому творится полная анархия. Я не за цензуру, но я за то, чтобы в первую очередь была идейная государственная культура. Этим и должно заниматься министерство культуры...

Песня про Степана Разина и величину его деяйний в истории, про человека который здесь у нас первым понял что всякий там царь и прочая нечисть ничем не лучше простого человека. Он такой величины стал человеком что с ним только волга и говорит. Ну я как-то так песню эту понимаю, может и не правильно. Но песня советская, русскими или не русскими тут и не пахнет. Гордиться своей нацией это гордиться вещами отношения к которым ты не имеешь, это глупо и вредно для личности.

I came across Mr Kharitonov several years ago and was astonished by his voice. This song, The Cliff, is, I believe, one of the greatest recordings ever made. Not only is his voice supreme but the choir are as good as it is possible to get. This was live which again staggers me. The other thing that makes it impossible to look away when watching this video is Mr Kharitonovs ability to act. The emotion shines through the performance. He is like Carras is to Opera. I will never tire of listening to and watching this performance. The greatest.

I will never forget the day I got a message of thanks from Mr. Kharitonov, for my support. Or the, chance I had to thank him. I will also never forget the day he passed away, and his wonderful son accepted my words of condolence. Regardless of where you were, what side of the ocean you happened to be on Mr. Kharitonov was a pure, powerful voice of the 20th century. Never should we forget him. Rest in glory, rest in power, sir.

I wont lie, I shed tears each time I listen to this. This song as well as "song of the Volga boatmen" is certainly the best he did with the Red Army Choir for me. I am still saddened by his passing, he is truly missed but has left us with many things to enjoy! Thank you to his son who continues to make sure his work and contribution to music is always remembered! Thank you!

We will never ever have a voice like his again. May he rest in glory, and respect. Thank you Mr. Kharitonov for allowing a Russian kid in the US the ability to feel love and pride in Russia during the cold war. That probably sounds weird to some, but it makes sense to me.

I am so glad this video survived and has so much popularity, I found it through my reccomended videos and it has been my favorite song for the 3 years I have known it. The historical concert when Brezhnev wept while Leonid Kharitonov performed "The Cliff" was in Kremlin Hall of Congresses in Moscow on 22d of April, 1965, dedicated to the 95th anniversary of Lenin. You're able to hear this song on the artist's official web site on the "Music" page there. The address is shown in my channel Profile box. The performance of the Cliff song on the above video took place in Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow a week later after that day.
