Apart from really tiny seeds like bedding begonias, I now sow in what was the compost used in my previous year's potato tubs. This is 50/50 home made & cheapest commercial, sieved & some vermiculite added. It outperforms anything else I've ever used & I use the same with added blood, fish & bonemeal for pricking out & growing on.

That's right so many people waste money buying new compost each year and it's not actually that good now, no life in it which is what all growing mediums need. Cheers.

Great video. I always save my seed as it seems the seed is custom made to suit my soil and climate. It always does much better than bought i seed- saves a lots of money too. Wishing you a happy Christmas and a wonderful new Yer. Happy growing 🙂

Rotting beans, do I know that problem! One thing I’ll say about saving field beans for seeds is that they germinate well for a good few years, just plunge them into the soil - provided they don’t get dug up and eaten. Had a look at the wood chip in my paths today and was disappointed, there’s not a lot of material worth having in them. I’ll have a look around the communal chip heap another day, that must have some decent stuff under it if I can expose it. Another interesting video 👍

@@paul_herts sadly this year field bean seed stored in the previous shed was eaten by rats overnight they chewed through the container to get them. New shed now rodent proof. 👍

@ 😱the little sods! Mine is always in the bottom of the bucket (which is stacked in another bucket) in the shed but I’ve only ever had mice nosing around in there, touch wood

@@paul_herts Hate Rats Paul, there are just so many this year I think down to the neglected plots, people plant crops and just leave them to rot? course the rats thrive on them and breed like crazy because the plots are not disturbed. Cheers.

@ our site had more activity last year but it was mostly slugs 😂 People planting stuff and losing it overnight - someone apparently bought 200 quid’s worth and lost the lot! Extreme beginner I guess??

@@paul_herts yes got some of them too Paul, they use slug pellets like they are sowing grass seed, all that does is bring mice in as they thrive on them. Slugs were bad this year I never lost much to them bar a couple of rows of carrots one end of that bed. They were coming in off the field. The nematode solution I make kicked in by June so i had hardly any to deal with. Pretty much still clear of them at the moment. Cheers.

Great information, you have just confirmed what I have done in the last few weeks,I did a side by side sowing of onions same seeds same pack, sowed at the same time,I have access to an abundance of leaf mould and the seeds in the leaf mould were first to germinate,I currently have 4 potatoe buckets full of sieved leaf mould and will probably sow all my plants/ flowers in this medium,ps the mould comes from a woodland setting but it’s not the woodland soil,it’s from leaves mowed from lawns over many years, best wishes and happy growing🌹🌹

@@TOSHROSEWELL hi there and thanks, it's not the quality or price of the compost it's the life in it that is important. If growing spuds in the leaf mould I would also add compost though leaf mould will be a bit lacking in nutrients for the bacteria to feed the spuds. Cheers.
