It’s such a shame that it seems like the Chinese gymnasts never hit when it counts. There are so many beam finals where the Chinese should’ve been at the top of the podium, but they’re just plagued with inconsistency. They truly are the most beautiful- when they hit.

Exactly. Zhang Nan could have won at least a bronze in Athens 2004, and gold in Worlds '05 & '06. Li Shanshan in Worlds 2007 and Beijing 2008. And Shang Chunsong could have dominated beam international competitions from 2013 to 2016.

Pressure. Most of the elite and even national level athletes start training before even entering preschool. Their whole life is about gymnastics and about training as hard as you can to climb to the top. For every Cheng Fei, He Kexin and so there's thousands of chinese girls that train for years but just don't even make it to national level, but they used years of their lives to train for it. If your only purpose in life is gymnastics, just imagine the pressure when you are one of the selected few in a big international tournament. You know all your previous collegues from your local and national gyms that trained with you but didn't make it because you happened to be the best. And then you have to deliver. Fml I can't even imagine being in their shoes.
