The yanks celebrate more than us. We're all not out drinking all day on Paddys day. Maybe the younger people but with me personally I'm 47 with three young kids. We normally go to a small parade in Templemore, Co. Tipperary and call out to see my Dad who's 80 this year and watch hurling on the TV. Quite and subdued here compared to green pints, green rivers. Sometimes I've worked on overtime on Paddys day. Americans love all that kind of Irish stereotyping, Leprechauns, grass in the middle of the roads, thatched houses, be gory be gosh, top of the morning to you, all that kinda stuff but to be honest we're a lot more sophisticated that all that and very educated. We have the same as you guys, modern citys, motorways, plasma tv, fibre broadband, cell phones, xboxes, nice cars, modern homes. We're not all mad into alcohol here.

We do celebrate it in Ireland, but depending on where Jimmy's parents went it might have been more low key that in an American city. I'm from a fairly small town. We have a small parade with a bit of music and dancing and the local schoolchildren and stuff like that, then people go drinking during the night.

Yes Liam, you did leave in the 80's! Saint Patrick's Day hasn't been anyway religious, across the board - I can't account for smaller towns or the Gaeltacht regions - for many years now. When Liam left Ireland was still governed by a largely Catholic dominated ethos. Today Saint Patrick's Day is all about the pageantry, the parades, and of course the drinking. Sad fact I know, but the stereotype predominantly fits the bill, we drink. And couple with the Cheltenham horse racing festival in the previous week, it's quite a hectic week. Not that I'm into horse racing myself but in fairness the pubs were packed all week up until Patrick's Day.

ciara murphy I wonder what would you think you that it isn't religous, I'm no expert but I can read and I know how look stuff up.. is it that you think being Irish makes you an expert on the subject or have you done some research or something... If so maybe you would explain why it is named for a Saint... I don't know, but this is from wikipedia, please correct the people who wrote it if you have some better information... Celebrations by region Ireland Saint Patrick's feast day, as a kind of national day, was already being celebrated by the Irish in Europe in the ninth and tenth centuries. In later times, he became more and more widely known as the patron of Ireland.[24] Saint Patrick's feast day was finally placed on the universal liturgical calendar in the Catholic Church due to the influence of Waterford-born Franciscan scholar Luke Wadding[25] in the early 1600s. Saint Patrick's Day thus became a holy day of obligation for Roman Catholics in Ireland. It is also a feast day in the Church of Ireland. The church calendar avoids the observance of saints' feasts during certain solemnities, moving the saint's day to a time outside those periods. St Patrick's Day is occasionally affected by this requirement, when 17 March falls during Holy Week. This happened in 1940, when Saint Patrick's Day was observed on 3 April to avoid it coinciding with Palm Sunday, and again in 2008, where it was officially observed on 14 March. St Patrick's Day will not fall within Holy Week again until 2160.[26][27] However, the secular celebration is always held on 17 March. In 1903, St Patrick's Day became an official public holiday in Ireland. This was thanks to the Bank Holiday (Ireland) Act 1903, an act of the United Kingdom Parliament introduced by Irish Member of Parliament James O'Mara.[28] O'Mara later introduced the law that required that pubs and bars be closed on 17 March after drinking got out of hand, a provision that was repealed in the 1970s. The first St Patrick's Day parade held in the Irish Free State was held in Dublin in 1931 and was reviewed by the then Minister of Defence Desmond Fitzgerald. In the mid-1990s the government of the Republic of Ireland began a campaign to use St Patrick's Day to showcase Ireland and its culture.[29] The government set up a group called St Patrick's Festival, with the aims: Traditional St Patrick's Day badges from the early 20th century, photographed at the Museum of Country Life in County Mayo To offer a national festival that ranks amongst all of the greatest celebration in the world To create energy and excitement throughout Ireland via innovation, creativity, grassroots involvement, and marketing activity To provide the opportunity and motivation for people of Irish descent (and those who sometimes wish they were Irish) to attend and join in the imaginative and expressive celebrations To project, internationally, an accurate image of Ireland as a creative, professional and sophisticated country with wide appeal.[30] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Patrick%27s_Day

1:00 I think we all just have different ideas of what "celebrating" means, clearly. It's a national holiday, people are given the day off work, there's parades in the cities and towns, the main parade in the capital is televised and people can watch it from home, some folks have family dinners.... Like what more were the Kimmel's expecting? People go to parades and the pub and would consider that having celebrated. What else is there?

But go to any city like Dublin (it's the best parade in the world in my opinion), Cork, Galway, Belfast etc... there's great parades and atmosphere. Then after the parades over most go into the Pubs and get drunk for the day 😉

Where were they in Ireland that there were no celebrations? There are parades all over the country, you'll rarely hear finer tin whistle playing. Kids passed out in pools of their own vomit, everywhere you look. An Garda Síochana looking the other way as 14-year olds purchase whichever naggin is the cheapest. The reason Paddy's Day seemed normal to them is because it is effectively the day where all of the Irish stereotypes come to life.

It just goes to prove how much foreigners think they know about Americans. I'm not even Irish and even I know about the Irish famine and the IRA. I lived in Dublin for two years and I lived in Dublin when they were taping the movie " Hunger" in Northern Ireland. I even dated an Irish guy for 3.5 years. You know nothing about what Americans know or don't know about the Irish people b/c if you did you would know there is a huge Irish population in Northeastern America. I know I'm a year late commenting but it had to be said.

I lived in Ireland for a few years and was in Dublin in 2000 on St Patrick's day. There was a huge parade made up mostly of North American high school bands. To the protestants in the North the holiday doesn't even exist.

Up here we burn saint Paddy flags. Mainly because it fucking annoys us so much. The funny thing is that it's the Americans who annoy me the most about it not the Irish. The Americans have to find a way to make everything they do annoying.

_"Up here we burn saint Paddy flags"_ You are either incredibly thick or 12 years old because there is no "saint paddy flags". Infact the only flag with "St. Patrick" in it is the St. Patricks satire which represents (Northern) Ireland in the Union Flag. So you just admitted to burning the union flag despite being a unionist. Is that how stupid you foreign inbreds really are?

@@JM-ss6uy I was in Bangor for it 1999. We asked a few people about it and they had no idea it was that day. Went to a couple pubs and it was like any other night. Maybe just didn't go to the right place. Definitely wasn't a parade.

@@BigSirZebras I keep writing a reply but because it has links to news articles youtube keep removing them so I'll write this again without the links... Thats because Bangor is a small town. If you hadve been in Belfast (only a 25 minute train ride from Bangor) you wouldve been treated to not one but two different parades/street parties, if you google the BBC news report from 1999 about 2 rival organisers putting on 2 different St Patricks Day events, you will see for yourself. There is a parade/street party in Belfast City Centre every year, with the exception of the last 2 years with the pandemic, though its back big time this year. And in fact if you google whats planned for this year, you will see there are tons of St Patrick's festivities planned all over Northern Ireland.

lmn1000ify I was just saying. No I don't hate the Irish, I hate the people claiming to be Irish in Northern Ireland yes but not the real Irish no. I know the red hand is from the O'Neill dynasty, my Great-Great-Grandfather had the surname O'Neill & was apparently related to the O'Neill dynasty according to my uncle.

lmn1000ify I was referring to the Irish tricolour(yes I know the Orange represents Protestantism) I was hating the Irish, I was hating the pretenders here. I wasn't a planter. That's like the Americans claiming to be European, they were once but they're not now. There aren't many Protestants who identify as Irish(8% of Protestants do) It is fairly interesting yes, I have family off Irish & British heritage but I settle for being British as the word British represents the English,Scottish,Welsh & Irish in my opinion anyway whereas I'm not just Irish. That would be hardcore Loyalists that you're talking about yet at the same time hardcore Republicans are just as stupid.
@romulusaugustus7344
@romulusaugustus7344 9 жыл бұрын
lmn1000ify I agree but the difference is that your community didn't get sieged by people shoving the Irish flag down your throat(the British government were pricks before & I apologise for that but that had nothing to do with the civilians) Would you hate a community if they bombed,attacked,harassed & terrorised you when they were fighting for was nothing to do with you? Some Protestants identify as Northern Irish & British yes. Very few identify as British & Irish though. No Loyalists aren't idiots, I never said that. Please do not get the term Loyalist confused with the UDA/UVF, please remember that a lot of Loyalists didn't support them. You are believing what the media made the word Loyalist to mean, a Loyalist is someone who is loyal to the crown & country/union. Loyalists aren't idiots & I will not talk to you again unless you admit & understand why what you said was wrong & not true at all. The IRA are idiots yes as are UDA/UVF, all UDA/UVF members are Loyalists but not all Loyalists are UDA/UVF members. I would say the same about Republicans however apart from the IRA they don't really exist & all identify as Nationalists nowadays.

I'm irish, born and bred. I live Dublin. Yes each big town and city has parades so to say we don't celebrate St Patrick's day isn't quite correct but it's a total cliché. The Irish are not all leprechauns and shamrocks. How we are perceived does male me cringe slightly. Being realistic most Irish pepole spend St Patricks day in the pub!

Parade and/or pub. That IS celebrating. I'm genuinely confused as to what the Kimmel's were expecting... To be fair, the corporation even do a full on multi-day festival in Dublin city centre for St Paddy's Day now, so I'm even more confused as to their criticism.

BULLLLSHIIIIIIT. This is the biggest celebration in the country, and the streets are stuffed with people. All towns, even the tiny ones have parades going on (I come from a town of 11,000 people, I'd know). The Ireland they were talking about there is not the same one I come from.

It's not seen as a particularly religious day... And I don't know where in Ireland his mam was, cause it's celebrated EVERYWHERE in Ireland! Every little town, village and City will have bunting and flags everywhere and a parade (it may well be a parade of tractors but still it's a parade!) also, the best part is that it's a day off work for most people!
