The scene with Anne is one of my favourites, because it completely encapsulates the message of the finale and the show as a whole. "What would you do if you found out that none of it matters? That its all controlled by powers greater than we can conceive, and they will never let it get better down here? What would you do?" "I'd get this truck packed before the new stuff gets here. Want to give me a hand?" "I do." If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.

Agree. It’s also one of the examples of how a Buffy/Angel really changed an ordinary person’s life. She didn’t become a witch or a demon hunter. Instead, she changed her normal life and helped others.

This is one of the best finales in tv history, in my opinion. Made even more remarkable by the fact that they had to come up with it so quickly. A lot of people didn't get the ending, thinking it left them with a cliffhanger. The point is that the fight never ends. There is no "winning" in this show.

Lot of great character moments in the episode, but I always really enjoyed Spike coming full circle with his performance. We've seen his journey as a fool for love throughout his entire life/unlife, with his worship of Cecily inspiring his words, affection for Drusilla inspiring much evil and attraction to Buffy inspiring much good. But he's finally grown in this final season to be someone doing the right thing and performing his poetry for their own sake, and not to impress a woman he's fallen for. After seven years of growth through two shows (and nearly 150 years in universe), he has gotten past being just love's bitch and become a champion in his own right.

I wonder if it was the poetry. The demon kept that aspect of him and in a way acted like a tiny kernel of a soul when he didn’t have one. That spark of humanity that eventually led him to fight to regain his soul as a poetic gesture for redemption.

A beautiful end that fits perfectly with the show's philosophy. Angel standing in the ally behind Hyperion, without Cordelia, Wesley, Fred or Doyle. The fighting will never end, but we fight anyway. Cause if nothing we do matter, then all that matters is what we do. Also, Angel ends with rain and darkness. Buffy ends with sunshine and positivity. he character development of Wesley is something else. A nervous, coward of a watcher that has "in fact faced two vampires before, under controlled circumstances of course", here he is 5 years later, willing to die for a higher cause.

Who'd have though when Wesley first came into Buffy that we would end up grieving his death so hard, or be cheering when Conner came onto our screens. Joss Whedon really did do show and season finale's better than anyone else. Probably two of the only shows I've seen where I didn't have any complaints about the endings.

The "Goodnight folks" still hits me. I absolutely loved Lorne and it still hurts since Andy Hallett is gone. Anyway...please pick up Angel: After the Fall then Angel Lorne: Music of the Spheres graphic novels since it was the sendoff for the character Lorne after Andy's passing. It was a pleasure watching your Buffyverse reactions. I'm hoping you will pick up Lost next.

Greatest last scene of a series ever. It's not a happy ending. It doesn't wrap things up in a nice neat ribbon. It's gritty and sort of bleak but it's so fitting to the show as a whole. We only got to spend a short 5 years in this world, a small glimpse of Angel's long ass life. The journey goes on and whatever happens afterwards is up to our own imagination. Whether they live or die isn't really the point, it's that they go on fighting

I fully admit I hated it at first because of the ending. It wasn’t until I rewatched the entire show again that I came to love it. The entire ending encapsulates the theme of the show perfectly: it’s about the good fight. Not the reward. They fight because it’s right. Loved that. And Wesley became my favorite character of the entire Buffyverse next to Buffy. What an amazing arc he had. Some of the best character development ever.

I think both series finished perfectly for the story they were telling. Buffy, every season ended with Buffy and the gang taking out the Big Bad, so the series ended with them taking out the Biggest Baddest. Angel, was about the need to fight even when there was no hope of winning, so we had the catharsis of them taking out the immediate Big Bads, but also the knowledge that the fight is still ongoing.
@davidmernick7360
@davidmernick7360 2 жыл бұрын
In all fairness, the Scoobies DON'T manage to take out the Biggest Baddest. They manage to stop The First's plan, but it's clear from the beginning that there's nothing they can actually do TO it (even though they hinted that The First's entire motivation for its apocalypse was to be able to gain a physical form).

I love the contrast between the two endings. Buffy is standing in the sunlight with a smile that gives hope. Angel ends in a dark alley at night, in the pouring rain, and it appears hopeless for them to win the battle. Buffy was about overcoming the odds, and Angel was about staying in the fight despite the sacrifices, and the idea that sometimes we can't win, but we shouldn't give up even if we realize it.

Amy Acker did a helluva job portraying Illyria's alien-ness and humanization over just, what, 5-6 episodes she was in? And it honestly made Wes' death even more painful that he was still, like, coaching her. Pointed out to her that she didn't come there out of boredom, she came because she was concerned for his safety. Almost made it worth it. Wes had turned into - far and away - the best character on the show over the past two seasons it was on. There's a reason, however annoying it is, that you ended up spoiled - it's because his death is the most emotionally resonant and memorable moment of the episode and really the season.

The incredible sadness all Buffyverse fans feel when reaching the end of Angel is palpable. The main reason being that these two shows were some of the best TV Drama ever shown, and many find it hard to find anything that compares. It is the endless re-watches that keeps most Buffyverse fans going. This is a spectacular ending from a brilliant S5 unmatched by anything in The Buffyverse. This last episode had everything, the absolute brilliance of Angel taking revenge on Marcus Hamilton 'you know the one word you shouldn't have mentioned there', the fantastic slaying by Gunn with an axe of the evil Senator, Lorne shooting Lindsey, a shocking scene as Lorne was such a gentle character, and the most heart breaking scene ever when Illyria says to Wesley ' would you like me to lie to you now ' and changes back into Fred, cementing the tragedy that is Wesley's life, but at that point he is at peace, knowing that Fred loved him so much. Then we have the fantastic punch from Illyria smashing the head of Cyvus Vail, giving us all great revenge. The ending in the Alleyway in the rain (this show loves alleyways in the rain) the four that are left know they are vastly outnumbered but will go down fighting to the last. David Boreanaz on being interviewed said they didn't survive, James Marsters said they did. Who really knows, but this was the greatest all all episodes in The Buffyverse. A fitting ending to two great shows, but don't you just wish at the end that Buffy and the rest of the Scoobies appeared with and army of Slayers for that ultimate final battle!

That Doyle clip at the end captured the emotion perfectly that you clearly had. It also encapsulated clearly the feeling I had when I watched this final episode. It was perfect ending for the Buffyverse and especially for Angel, the more mature show where evil cannot be defeated but where you perhaps can stop the machine for a short while.

"The road to redemption is a rocky path..." that continues on, for our remaining heroes, in a rainy back alley of the Hyperion hotel in L.A because "If there is no great glorious end to all this, if nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do. I adore this finale. Illyria and wesley scene is quite beautiful. The way she learned to care about him reminds me a bit of Anya learningto be human, but in a more extreme way. The Anne scene. And that ending that the fight simply never ends. The fight for redemption is daily and not about the reward, so the shanshu prophecy is thrown away too. This show has its highs and lows, but that finale is just powerful. Its not a message of empowerment and hope as buffy, but it is a call for action even in hopeless situations.

I’ve already said so much about this episode in the past that I might have exhausted all of my main points aside from the fact that it is my favorite series finale of all time. But you know how much I’ve been here and how much I almost always have to say. So I'm here to talk about alleys. Angel, Faith, Darla. City Of, all the way to Not Fade Away. Alleys are important. Death. Sacrifice. Redemption. New Life. Each of these presented, as many things in the Buffyverse, as direct choices. We learned horrors in these alleys. Angel died in an alley. Darla sacrificed herself for her son in an alley. But most important of all to our journey in Los Angeles, Angel was introduced in an alley. Twice. We discovered things in alleyways. Faith was saved in an alley, Connor was saved in an alley. The absurdist mission statement of Angel the series was reinforced in that last shot in the alley. We all know the words. They’re practically etched into every corner of this comment section at this point. Death. Sacrifice. Redemption. Birth. Alleys in the Buffyverse are transitions between chapters. The end, and the beginning. Death, and life. To Shanshu, indeed. 😌 Thank you for the the part you played in keeping this fandom going. I know we Buffyverse fans aren’t always the greatest to deal with, and we certainly don’t make things easy, but I know many of us are still infinitely appreciative every time people give these shows a chance. Anywho, welcome to the Post-Buffyverse withdrawal. There is no exit. ✨

It is extra bitter that part of Illyria's lie is that Wesley will go to where Fred is, and they can be together, because Illyria ate Fred's soul, so that can never happen, and Wesley knows it. I do really like now Illyria's grief did not switch off the moment Wesley died. It was real, and the rage in her face as she transitions back to blue during that final punch was amazing.

Although that is basically what we are left with, Fred's soul is gone forever, it was intended to reveal that Fred's soul still existed inside Illyria. You are what you eat, so Frellyria lives. :) Her face may have been a lie at the end there, but her words weren't. My biggest regret about the lack of a season 6 is not being able to see what Acker and Whedon would have done with the character. And if it hasn't been said yet, Amy Acker everyone.

All these years later, I finally love this finale the way I should. I was wrecked by Wesley's death, and I adored Illyria, so I really mourned the loss of another season of the two of them and what they'd rumoredly planned to do with Fred's potential return. But it was a lovely bittersweet ending with all of them going out and fighting one last time, and I felt it did justice to the themes of the series.

Here are a few of my thoughts about the finale in case anyone is interested: - Wesley had the best character development and story arc in the entirety of the Buffyverse. I might be being biased because he's my top favorite, but just look at how he started out and how far he's come just to get that ending... he really had a complete one, didn't he? - Everything you said about Lorne's ending is in agreement. You said everything I was thinking perfectly. I couldn't have said it any better myself. - The fact that nearly all the humans did not survive in Angel says a lot... - I gotta say that I prefer Not Fade Away to Chosen because it's truly satisfying, and the deaths in Angel hit me a lot more. I know I'm in the minority, but I prefer the show Angel more, even though I love Buffy as well. - And finally, notice how Buffy ended in sunshine while Angel ended in rain. It's so interesting to see that contrast between light and dark :) - Oh yeah and one more thing, thank you for all your lovely reactions. It's been so great and I cannot wait to see what else you've got going for your channel ❤❤

Thank you for taking us on the journey with you 🥲 29:49 Yes, exactly. Redemption and helping the helpless is not something you just achieve and get to be done with; it's a never-ending effort, so the "cliffhanger" ending is much better for this show than if they had beaten the bad guys (Sr. Partners) with any kind of finality. In fact, you said something very similar yourself after 5x16: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnTEapSMfqaBmaM "With Angel, the battle never ends; there's always going to be another fight." 53:01 Lorne's ending is the one part of this finale that I don't like. It probably was the best way to surprise Lindsey, but I just feel so awful for Lorne. After Fred, he's the sweetest member of the whole team, and he did not deserve to get so emotionally broken.

I'm not sure if you got it, but it wasn't just "some poetry" from Spike, it was very specifically *the* poem we saw him writing for Cecily. It's also a call back to Dru - the poem finishes with the word "effulgent", which everyone at the party made fun of, but it's the word Dru said to him when he met her, which enraptured him in that moment. This time he got cheers for the poem, not ridicule.

I loved the finale. My only quibble is I wish Lorne had a happier ending. Killing Lindsey, for any reason, was really against his nature. You could tell he was just heartbroken and done with everything. Losing Fred just broke his spirit. I wish he could’ve found peace in the end. I know he sort of did in the comic continuation, but I wish we could’ve gotten another live action season to see it. It’s also funny, I’m following along with Dakara on her channel and she’s up to season 3 of Buffy, so it’s jarring to see that uptight, sort of douchey version of Wes and then come back here and see the hero Wes with all he’s been through.

Buffy and Angel are two of my favorite shows ever (along with AoS) but they are not easy to watch at times. The episodes make us laugh, smile, cry, angry, and question our sanity at certain moments. Not everyone would willingly sign up to watch this series on camera, but you did. And I (along with many others) are so glad that you did. Your reactions and reviews to the shows that you watch are always so authentic, thoughtful, and genuine. In fact, I became so upset with the final season of another show that you react to (The 100) that I simply relied on your reactions and reviews to keep up with the series. You are one of my favorite reactors on KZbin and you helped keep my spark for the Buffyverse alive after finishing the series myself a few years ago for the first time. I don't comment as much as I should, but I just wanted to thank you for taking us on this journey with you. React to Passion of the Nerd's episodes....that now you don't have to worry about spoilers. Thank you Liam. Ian at POTN said he started his review channel because Buffy got him through some tough times I'm glad Buffy and Angel helped you you deserve it.

Not a bad idea, obviously not full episodes but what hit him the hardest. There are a lot of people out there that are doing Buffy reviews. Years of material if you put all the good ones together.

My favorite series finale. Tragic, beautiful and inspiring

So glad you loved it. I’ve always thought it was the perfect finale. I see this episode on a ton of lists of shows that ended unresolved or on a cliffhanger, but I never saw it that way. Angel learned early on about the whole apocalypse/hell is already here on earth every day. The finale follows that. The fight never ends and our heroes will keep fighting.

So proud of you dude. You’ve come so far. And don’t worry, your journey isn’t over yet! Looking forward to reactions to comics/Buffy commentaries and extra features/interviews etc. Not many reactors do that stuff so it’ll be a great niche for you!

While Buffy is a story of heroes defeating the big bad year after year in different ways together, Angel is different as the real struggle is with the characters, their morals and their redemptions. All the characters in Angel struggle with that line between good and evil and that struggle never goes away until you die. So it is fitting that these characters end the series going out fighting that battle regardless of the outcome because that was never the point of them fighting. Buffy fights to end the fights but Angel fights for redemption which is never ending.

Hi Liam. Congratulations on making it to the end of this Big Chapter of your life as a reactor. Little background here: I found your channel during the early days of the pandemic. I was in college in my mid 40's, exhausted from working 3 jobs, having done 5 years of school already and was on my very last legs. Then COVID hit. I was going to be graduating in a major global crisis. I had been away from my loved ones in a dry, desiccated husk of a city called Los Angeles for YEARS and was just at the end of my rope. I found you and a few other reactors, and quickly realized how much you were nourishing me with your insightful deep dives on each episode. I wasn't in a position to become a patron for almost another year; I ended up living with others, struggling to stay afloat for 14 months. As my new business flourished, I added you to my Patreon as soon as I could. I'm a proud Cinnamon Roll pin owner, and have been thrilled to see the other shows you are adding (some are my cup of tea, some are not--nbd). I moved to St. Louis for a lower cost of living, and have been so glad to go on this trip with you. I laugh and cry with you. I shake my fist at spoilers along with you. I grieved losses with you. In short, I'm a big fan. :D Thank you for keeping up the dogged and consistently great dedication and work. I will be here til the episodes run dry. :D My only comment on this episode in particular is that now that Angel has finished, I look back and can't picture the Buffy arch without the Angel arch. It's a mark of the excellence of both shows that I see them as two threads on the same quilt.

It's been such a great journey. I found your channel by accident right at the start of quarantine in early 2020 when you happened to have recently posted your reaction to "Once More with Feeling". I had never really watched a reactor to TV and movies before that. I love your sense of humor and your in-depth analysis of themes and characters, bringing up many things I'd never thought of before. I'll still be around for OUAT and ATLA. Thanks for putting up with the trolls all these years. Edit: that clip right at the end was cruel, and yet so appropriate. :(

I always felt like Lorne would try and skip out of this dimension altogether and go find somewhere else to be.. That's why he said 'don't come looking for me, because you won't find me,' I don't think he is in our dimension any more... He started fresh in a whole new plane.

The doctors 'where I stand' speech has made me revisit this ending and see it in a new light. For Angel, like the Doctor, "Winning? Is that what you think it's about? I'm not trying to win. I'm not doing this because I want to beat someone, or because I hate someone, or because, because I want to blame someone. It's not because it's fun and God knows it's not because it's easy. It's not even because it works, because it hardly ever does. I do what I do, because it's right! Because it's decent! And above all, it's kind. It's just that. Just kind. If I run away today, good people will die. If I stand and fight, some of them might live. Maybe not many, maybe not for long. Hey, you know, maybe there's no point in any of this at all, but it's the best I can do, so I'm going to do it. And I will stand here doing it till it kills me" Angel has always been about just because you cant win doesn't mean you don't fight. The concept of the senior partners not going away fits in to it

I loved the finale. Think its one of the best ends of any TV show. Tied up everything in a very satisfying way. Slightly bummed because this was my favorite season of the show. It really graduated into its own thing and not just a Buffy spin off.

It was great to share those years with you Liam. I wasn't there from the beginning, but you definitely were one of the first reactors I started to follow, after discovering Shannan's reaction to Chosen and binge-watching her whole Buffy adventure. Alas, there isn't much shows I know and like enough to seek reaction to them, so it may be goodbye. Though, if you ever react to Tru Calling, Veronica Mars or Quantum Leap, I'd be more than happy to join you again.

Thanks for the journey! The amount of thoughtful, hard work that you put into your reactions, and especially your season reviews is very much appreciated. I really enjoyed getting to relive Buffy and Angel through your eyes so thanks for that opportunity. Suggestions for new series I'd love to see you react to that I would follow: Lost, BattleStar Galactica (new one) and this last one I know is bit different, but is really phenomenal TV and easily holds it's ground against other show's you've reacted to is Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

Thank you for such a great journey, It has been a great couple of years watching your reactions I can't believe it is all over.very rarely do I think a tv show gets a finale right, Angel is one show I think does as tragic as it was I think it was a fitting end for both Angel as a character and the show itself. you know Lorne killing Lindsey shocked me more than Wesley's death did I just didnt see it coming it is the only element of this finale that still gets me thinking years later I havent made up my mind if it was good or not

Thank you so much for your Buffyverse reactions throughout the years! Your mileage may vary with the comics, and some of the storylines there are quite out there, but both the Buffy and Angel comics are still worth checking out in my opinion. Also if you want to see more stuff from Amy Acker, be sure to check out the CBS show Person of Interest, which in my opinion is the best role if her career. Though she doesn’t appear until later it is absolutely worth checking out, and reminds me thematically of Angel if it was sci-fi and set in modern-day New York. It was done by the creator of Westworld Jonathan Nolan, and is in my opinion the superior and more consistent show. Quality-wise it reminds me of Angel and Agents of SHIELD, all shows that start slow and with a case of the week format, which gradually improve as they become more serialised and are aided by a strong cast of characters both main and recurring who you grow to root for.
