My problem with the game is that you need to know the unexplained mechanics to race decently, while a game like Crash Team Racing requires you to know nothing to race normally. It's not that it was bad, it just had to rework a control scheme to match human movements. I actually had that game, and it's biggest failure was that it was a Kinect game. It was still fun. It just made it hard to control and due to that they had to change certain mechanics to work with that curve. Full body control is not conducive to racing mechanics sadly. And it's two player was super easy to futz with. Put your hand in front of the other person and their racer screws up so bad. They should have just made it a controller game and fixed the issues with the past two games.

Keep everything like the first one but... Add the level up function from gravity, but instead they unlock the gravity drift (in midair only) and the type ability insteads increases speed while using the ability allowing all racers to be able to use their type ability innately, also it still allows your gear to change shape like in zero gravity...being able to unlock the gravity drift ability allows for more reward mid race to unlock new shortcuts.. I think this would be the best way to make a new sonic riders game keeping the best of each one along with all characters gears and maps while also adding in more maps and maybe more characters.

The point on automation is really insightful! I could definitely see a different movement mode being needed to grind on rails (like the balancing thing when grinding in THPS), and having a more difficult maneuver to pull off would make sense for the reward of a shortcut rail. Unfortunate they didn't go with something like that. My coworker Justin (our level designer) keeps trying to push this idea of "no passivity" with the systems of our games. One of his biggest examples is ladders: you essentially just hold forward when climbing up one, and he tries to avoid them altogether, instead providing stairs and ramps up to places. Basically (like you said), anything that abridges the moment to moment gameplay should be avoided (unless, like, the game's ABOUT automation, like Factorio).
@DanieleMulas-up7np5 жыл бұрын
I found it beyond laughable, as it goes on to praise Colors, a game that PREDICATES on automation and passivity, whether it's just watching the game play itself or using the (pace-breaking, pointless, uninteresting) Wisps to perform a useless and annoying minigame to get an S-Rank or complete fetch quests. Double standards FTW

I never owned this game so I can’t say anything about the gameplay but I know for a fact this is one of my favorite stories in the franchise. It has some fun humor while feeling natural to the characters something that is hard for this series to get right. Characterization is on point (I like how Knuckles is the first to call Eggman out on his BS some nice subtle development). All of the character motives seem fitting, and it adheres to continuity (It was smart for Sonic to bring up "The Eggmanland Project" to make sure we remember it when Unleashed released later that year.) But the main things I love are its mystery and world-building. The only game-long mysteries done in this series is Chaos' motive and origin in SA1 (which most will have pieced together by Knuckles story), Gemerl’s origins in Sonic Battle, and Shadow's past in his game (which was handled... poorly). While here the purpose of "The Ark of the Cosmos" and "The lightless black" are constantly questioned throughout the story with subtle hints (especially in the song "Un-Gravitify") before the big reveal before the climax. I know some people are bothered by changing the Babaoniyans from Genie descendants to Alien descendants but I'm fine with it for three reasons 1. I saw the ending of the Babalon Story in Zero Gravity before the original 2. The Babalon Guardian fight in the first game showed the genie guardian as a result of technology, not magic. Plus you could easily marry the origins. If there's a Planet of Black Starfish I could buy there is a planet of Genies. 3. Plus it gives the explanation as to why people in Sonic's universe would wish on Stars which is great additional lore and world-building

Its clear that you are super passionate about racing games and what makes them technical and involved. However, while I hear you, I never felt as much of a dead set poor implementation that you are describing. Even in the original, I thought that the speed/power/flight was meant to be a character specific shortcut that took less time, so the sequel felt even more so that it was crucial to hit them. It took skill pull of these shortcuts anyway whether jumping at the right time or putting in correct inputs. Additionally, the sequel's ability to feel like you are maintaining speed was exhilarating. (it could be b/c we played the original on a PC that was slower than molasses) The air mechanic was interesting, but once you got a hang of the game, it never felt like it was a threat. But when it did run out, it took a ton of fun out of the game. While someone would say, "get gud," that mentality isn't fun. I THOROUGHLY enjoyed both games and like them both equally and differently. So while I can tell your passion based on how in-depth you go, I don't feel the same, likely because I'm less of a racing buff. It was easier and more fun to boot up the wii and grab a controller and devote skill to turning and shortcuts than to struggle with a PC and air management. ( I also used a wiimote, which made the game feel more movement and skill heavy too)

There is one thing to say about the crimson tower thing. The grind speed actually slows down to 130 instead of the usual 150-160 (can’t remember it rn) and if you pull a better jump before that grind you get to the top level. The top level has a shorter distance till the turn and to add on to that, if you perform a little hop, gravity turn through the middle, your time will be much faster than the grind. I will admit the Gravity Dive sections are basically automated but this game does have deeper mechanics. Saying it’s simple is a total misunderstanding of the game which is basically what people also do with the original Riders. Edit: The story bots are laughably easy but once you unlock more boards, the bots have access to them and they get much more difficult. That’s how I was able to find the ‘shortcut’ above.

I've played this game for years. While I fully acknowledge that it's completely gutted from the first game, I've always just loved how broken gravity control is. There is more intricacy to it than you think, but not in an intended way. Apart from the numerous ways you can use it to clip through parts of tracks, there are many ways you can use it on regular track elements to improve time without exploiting glitches or holes in the track borders. Here's a few examples. The first flight route on Botanical Garden, gravity diving through it instead of flying is considerably faster, even more so if you start it frame perfectly on the boost pads from the wall ride route. The parts of Crimson Crater and security corridor where the track turns 90 degrees upward, and you jump off a ramp to boost pads at the bottom, it's slightly faster to use gravity control at the peak of your jump and shoot into the track from there with an upward angle. Mobius strip has an oddity to it where because the track forces you to dive at certain points, you can skip the stall period by being in flight when it starts. When you cancel flight you will instantly get a huge boost. On 90s Boulevard, right from the start, where the game gives you 2 routes to take, the fastest route is to go right, dive up to the top level, use control to turn straight into the ramp, and then cancel the jump at the peak with gravity control to shoot into the face of the track. Those were just a few that I could think of off the of my head, but the gravity mechanics honestly invalidate many of the skill shortcuts. Grinding in particular. I've always held the opinion that grinding straight up sucks in this game. The amount of lead it gives is usually so small, that gravity can beat it out easily. Even flying, there's only 2 or 3 routes that I consider worthwhile. Also, I've always hated the way they balanced the gear attributes. There's only about 10 good gear in the game if you ask me, and the best is easily the Angel/Devil by a huge margin. That gear having literally instant acceleration is stupidly overpowered. Also, the way the ramps work is stupid. I've never understood why on every track getting an X rank on the first jump is super easy, but any other jump, even the same ramp but on a different lap, almost never gives an X rank, even when I know I'm jumping in the right spot. I really would like to see a sequel, but I want the mechanics to work more like the first game.

To be fair though, while the type shortcuts may be slower, they also grant GP, whereas use of the Gravity abilities takes it away.

I loved sonic riders as a kid and didn’t know about to much of what you talked about in the first video (just enough to get me through the game) and I remember it being a blast. I’d get confused and angered when my character would jump off the board but it was never a long term issue. Enjoyable for me as a kid and has cool mechanics/ challenges for those that want more of a challenge (could’ve been conveyed better but you wanted a challenge right ;). Think this is the key balance that needs to be found with most games and that allot of “passionate” people in the community seem to forget about. Cool set of videos!

I swear I played this game when I was like 8ish and I figured out the mechanics easily enough, if anyone had significant trouble doing the same I fear for them

I just realised something that I think would've made the game better. Online races were always something everyone would've liked to see but I think it would've made the game a lot better gameplay wise too. One of the issues of the choices in this game is that you pretty much have all the rings for yourself because you are simply better than CPUs at the game. It means get a good head start, take the first shortcut and then you got nothing to worry about anymore. You take the best route and win. Say there were more players at your skill level, players that knew the best routes, how to grab rings, etc. The risk of not getting your gear upgrade before the next shortcut would exponentially increase because there's no guarantee you'd get ahead of the other player and grab the rings before them. Getting item boxes and the GP gauge would also be more valuable due to the ability to overtake using the gravity dive and get rings in the next segment sooner than someone else. That would encourage high risk high reward strategies like hitting the hidden 100 GP/rings boxes or taking suboptimal routes to get access to more resources than the players using the optimal ones. Obviously there'd be a balancing issue due to the first player having all the access to the resources with too few opportunities to overtake them, but that's nothing a little itembox RNG tuning couldn't fix. A lot of the automated sequences are annoying because there's nothing to do, but there's only nothing to do because there's noone to challenge you to do something.

being a young teen at the time me and my brother actually loved free riders. kinesthetic wasn't perfect but free riders worked for us and i beat it.. I think some people just didn't have the space or energy to do something so active. or patience in some cases

I loved Sonic Riders! Well the first one. The second one I played when I was 17, and SUCKED at it. I just couldn't get used to the gravity mechanic and kept trying to play it like the first one.

I remember when I bought the sonic riders zero gravity excited because it was the sequel and I had played too many hours for the first game. My disappointment was immense and my day was ruined when I realized that the stunts in the air were automatic and you could not perform them yourself.

Dude I love this games soundtrack too, it was one of the main reasons why I kept playing it, but yeah I do wish they up the difficulty with the mechanics and the A.I.

I genuinely loved this game as a kid. My friend having the original sonic riders, I got my hands on a PS2 copy, and played the hell out of it.

I have to say at least the story does a good job contenuing and building off the world that was already built on. Corny? Yea but I mean that was the reason I played this game a lot growing up.

I think this game did much better at the getting comfortable first situation, but I am personally glad there is less depth in this game. I would say this game is also much more visually appealing than Riders. The boulevard tracks are especially appealing and are on par with how much I love the Sega crossover stages in Riders. I think Zero Gravity is also enjoyable in it's own way. I love using some of the extra boards like Angel/Devil and Big Bang. I love how the game makes accessibility much more available to every character. Like every character can now choose from almost every board. However I think the game has some extremely bad flaws. Like the default controls. The horizontal wii remote is GARBAGE at controlling. I remember having so much difficulty getting out of the gate in the first story mode level that ALL of the CPUs completed the race BEFORE I got out of the gate. The vertical wii remote isn't too much better either. You have to point at the screen where to go. The main issue is when the pointer is out of range from the sensor bar and you lose control. Also the attack item shortcuts in this game are actually underpowered. They are often slower than just skipping them and going normally. They do make it easy to access top speed but SUCK at turning. They also only appear for the players in the back, so unless you have big bang, you never get them in first. Also the robot characters are terrible. Boring, generic, and even unfun to play as. Since they are wheel types, they can't access gravity drift and I think burn GP twice as fast in gravity dive. They have to do a jump and manually drift at corners. But the drift itself is bad. If you do it right, you pause for a second and then get a burst of speed. Do it okay, and you get a smaller burst of speed. Fail, and then you are stuck at no speed and cant efficiently accelerate.

Yeah, Sonic Riders was basically my favorite racing game while Zero Gravity was just terrible. I still 100% the game, but it wasn't nearly as fun as the original. Not to mention the game kinda forced you into taking very specific paths as there was very few ways to go faster other than cheese the game. Music was still incredible though.
