Please watch the video with a better take on these lifts in addition to watching this video!
Originally installed in 1983, these lifts were given a facelift by Hitachi in 2008 following the refurbishment of the shopping mall, just to make them match the new modern look of the mall. The lobbies and fixtures of the shopping mall floors (Floors B2-1, 1-3, M3 4-5, and 5M) were upgraded, the cab was refurbished, and a new chime on the floors of the shopping malls were installed (However, the old bell was still in use even after the first modernisation, meaning that the were original bell and the new chime were played when the lift arrived at the designated floor provided it was on a floor of the shopping wing, but in this video filmed, the bell of this lift has probably broke). However, as the rest of the components were not replaced, including the relay controller and the motor, these lifts still had their original character, thus they were really shaky. The reason why the hotel floors (floors 6 and 7) did not have their lobbies upgraded, is because the hotel wing was not refurbished. So at the same time, the original fixtures were retained. The rest of the lifts here were not modernised, with the exception of a service lift at the back of the building. Then in 2016, a modernisation project for the lifts was started by the management of the building to improve the safety of the lifts. All the lifts have been modernised or either in the process of modernisation as of now, with the exception the service lift mentioned earlier (probably because the modernisation itself in 2008 was very extensive) and the additional service lift installation done in the 2000s by Kone. The modernisation was very extensive, with each lift taking about 2.5 months to complete with Schindler modernising the lifts in the hotel (Novotel Hotel Clarke Quay) and shopping wing, and the Otis Elevator Company modernising the 4 lifts in the serviced apartments wing (Somerset Liang Court). During the modernisation for these set of lifts, they replaced the controller, the fixtures of all floors, the motor, the counterweight, the ropes, guide rails, door mechanism, lift car top, lift chime etc. The result is a much safer and less shaky lift. However, as the fixtures and lobbies of these lifts are in good condition having been upgraded in 2008, they were not refurbished. As many components of the original lifts were replaced during the 2 modernisations, the current lifts probably only have less than half of the original components left from 1983. The original lobbies on the hotel wing floors are one of the original features/ components that leave the obvious mark of the original manufacturer. In a nutshell, the first modernisation was only for aesthatic purposes, focusing on improving the looks of the lift and the second modernisation was focused at improving the safety of the lifts within the building. The lift filmed in this video was filmed before the second modernisation by Schindler, and it has already been modernised.
