In 2012, my kids introduced me to Lianne La Havas' debut album, Is Your Love Big Enough? One play and I was hooked; I've been a fan ever since. Her music works for any activity, any emotion.
The first time I saw La Havas live, I was unprepared for the experience: Her music touched my heart in a way I'd never experienced before. I cried through the entire performance. Her music was that powerful, with lyrics woven together with beautiful harmonies; it pulled emotions out of me I didn't even know existed.
La Havas is soulful yet playful, raw and vulnerable in a commanding kind of way, and her new second album, Blood, is as amazing as the first. In this Tiny Desk performance, she plays two new songs - "What You Don't Do" and "Unstoppable" - as well as "Forget," from her first album. She and her talented collaborators, James Wyatt on piano and Frida Mariama Touray on backing vocals, rehearsed this special arrangement during the sound check just moments before the performance. It's wonderfully intimate, with just guitar accompanied by vocals that embellish without getting in the way. If you're like me, you will never get enough.
Blood is available now.

I don't know how they do it, but NPR music transcends the billboard charts. Lianne La Havas's tiny desk has more views than Taylor Swift's and Billie Eilish's COMBINED. That is incredible. NPR is a space where the most talented artists get the recognition they deserve. Always.

One of the many, many things that amaze me about Lianna is her per-fect pronunciation of every word she sings. You can hear every consonant, every syllable and she uses the accents in her words to add a new layer of rhythm to her songs. It makes me appreciate language even more and it's a rare sound to hear in music these days.

Fun fact: She actually has to keep her eyes closed as much as she does, as not to unintentionally mesmerize people around her with her smile, let alone her singing. Currently, both the UN and NATO recognizes the action, of her making direct eye contact, while smiling a WMD, weapon of mass distraction. Stating, that be she allowed to, on camera maintain eye contact while smiling, AND singing, for more than a couple of seconds, people watching said clip, will be unable to get any work done for at least an hour, locked into a semi vegetative state, with the risk of dehydration, as they watch her again, and again unless someone forcefully removes the victim from the source.

Tiny Desk is where sub-par vocalists can't hide. Too intimate, too raw, too in your face. It is however just another venue for someone Lianne. Few vocalists can hit a note and be 100% in tune the second the note is released and maintain the pitch throughout, with or without the help of a vibrato. Most vocalists who have this kind of control and accuracy often developed the ability from playing and mastering an instrument in addition to their voice. Leanne is clearly no exception. She is truly Exceptional!

I feel this way about almost all the Tiny Desk concerts. I fall in love with the raw artist then go listen to the album and am disappointed in the over-production of almost every one of them. The latest one was Andrew Bird. His performance is AWESOME but in his album his vocals get washed out by the music too easily. I think the pendulum has swung to far in favor of electronic manipulation so it is now on the back-swing to raw live music. I can only hope :-D

Jordon Brewer i think im not appreciating josh enough. i know nothing about sound mixing and mastering but any of tiny desk concert’s audience can tell that their sound quality is impeccable, whatever set up they use and sound editing they do enhances the musician’s voice, enabling us to hear it crisp and clear, and amplifies the characteristics in each voice so we can hear every twist and turn and projection. it’s indispensable for a musical experience. top notch
