My very first listen of this, a suprise, I wrote my thought it is clearly a Masterpiece. Freddies treble voice rides magnificent to bring melodic harmony of the strings accompanied by the distinctive voices of Libera. A wonderful arrangement, written with melodic thought.

Thank you so much William for this reaction. Your reactions are always so great. A lot of knowledge and emotions. Unfortunately, there are only a few reactions to the songs of the fantastic LIBERA choir. Now, christmas is coming. What do you think about reacting to LIBERA's stunning version of 'Carol of the bells' ? Over 26 million views ! Unbelievable harmonies ! And, as you know, there is an interesting story behind this traditional song too. Greetings from Switzerland. Chris.

@@BangkokVoiceCoach Sorry to be a nuisance, but I couldn’t sign off without drawing your attention to this gem: “Voca Me” (kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6SvqZeZp61lers) has been performed at most Libera concerts across the generations. This particular performance was recorded live for PBS at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC, Aug 2014. The descant is performed by a fan favourite from a generation ago and his name is *Thomas Delgado-Little*. If you get hooked on watching Libera videos, like I did, he will stick out like a sore thumb in that gen (2012-2015) mostly because of his range. I think he still holds the record for the highest note sung at a Libera concert.

Thank you so much, William, for putting into words so succinctly the feelings I have when listening to this beautiful music. I am not sure whether anyone has commented previously, but Freddie Mushrafi and Malakai Bayoh are in the same school choir, Cardinal Vaughan Schola Cantorum, videos of which are on YT. You may also notice that a number of other members of Libera are also in that choir, although not Luca Brugnoli, who was the top boy choirester in the BBC's choirester of the year in 2022. As an aside, Libera is much loved by Alad Jones, with whom Malakai has performed a duet, as they sung at his wedding.

I did wonder why Malakai himself had not joined Libera, but it’s likely because he already sings in his local church choir. Libera is a huge commitment, takes up a lot of the boys’ spare time what with coaching, learning and recording new songs for albums and performances, perfecting established songs, rehearsals for concerts, music videos and tours abroad (Libera went to Korea, the USA and Japan in 2023 - their first trips abroad since before the pandemic). A small group of 10 went out to Japan in June before the full choir’s visit in October (that small group included Freddie, Freddie’s younger brother Thomas, Luca and Daniel White). Somehow around a third of the boys in Libera are also in their school choir (CVSC), including some recent alumni who aged out of Libera over the last couple of years. What with school, church and solo career Malakai would’ve needed to clone himself to have been in Libera too.

I had some great fortune to attend a performance by Libera (pronounced with the short vowel sound of I not leebera or Liberia) What I can tell you is that any recording is essentially some electromagnetism, a bit of copper some iron and plastic etc. and pales in comparison to when Freddy and the rest kick it off live. There were a lot of empty seats available at the Bel Air Church on 08/03/023 so I would like to encourage everyone to network more and access schedules on Libera of the US online. Thanks!

While I appreciate the more historical/scholarly/technical aspect of the piece, I feel no performance can be judged upon it's writing only but the (interpretation of the) performance itself. I don't think enough people understand how difficult it is to get near "perfection" or "intent" of the composer or elevate it's expectations, but this performance -imho- is getting really (and I mean really!) near!!! (regarding my own interpretation) and this could not have been possible without a conductor having some idea of what to achieve. This is a product of multiple talents, truly. Each and every generation, between and beyond, should try collectively attempt to preserve or rediscover this music. One of the most precious inherences of humanity.

The piece is unusual in that it is not what people think it is. I recently saw a television programme in which the eminent scholar David Owen Norris said he thought Mozart had borrowed from Albinoni’s Adagio! Completely impossible as it hadn’t been written for another 200 years!! I adore this performance, the arrangement is immensely clever and the boys are wonderful. But it’s not really baroque music - and I think people should know that.

@@BangkokVoiceCoach I have a question that I think you can answer. It's something I have only noticed now which I think would only emphasize the talent Freddie portrayed at this performance. So when he sings, he's showing a lot of conentration, focus, facial expressions that accompanies that, but the detail I would like to point out is his skill of breathing techniques? His nostrels are really actively widening and closing (responding) as he sings, wether voluntarily or involuntarily... I think it's a result of some form of breathing technique training, because I don't think I would do that when singing. (I'm thinking Didgeridoo type of techniques here) I'd be happy to "read" your thoughts on this? What can you tell/teach us?

What has impressed me over the years I have listened to this choir since 2008, is the ability these soloists of Libera have been taught for breath and vibrato control is amazing! I did manage to travel to hear them one time live and was so put off by the venue they were in, it just was horrible acoustics and didn’t do them justice at all! It seemed like a cheap repurposed theater which was small and I was beyond disappointed. The boys performed very well but the venue just didn’t provide the “support” for such professional performers. It was near Chicago, but I was not impressed!

There is standard choral arrangement, and then there is Libre choral arrangement. I do not have the vocabulary needed to describe the difference, but I know it when I hear it. Libre is amazing no mater what they sing, and they can do a standard choral arrangement just as beautifully as they do a Libre arrangement. William, you obviously have the musical vocabulary necessary to explain what makes the Libre sound, as opposed to standard chorus. Would you be so kind as to try explaining this in terms that an appreciative, but untrained listener can understand? By the way, I think that Freddie is one chorister who may be able to keep up with Malakai.

I am in the same position as yourself in needing a professional to explain why Libera are a cut above other choirs in their arrangements. Of course, Freddie is in the same school choir as Malakai, as I have commented below, although Malakai seems to be favoured for solos in their public performances.

I think Malakai has a voice of remarkable beauty and has very effortless and pure high notes. Freddie’s voice is a little less round at the top and a bit thinner overall. The full top notes make Malakai stand out. It’s terrific that the choir has such magnificent talent and draws from so many cultures.

Libera (not Libre, as you wrote) were set up by Robert Prizeman and still have an association St Philip’s Church, Norbury, South London. Their arrangements style was created by Robert, who is now deceased, and it’s success is that it is not too formal and classical. It is a softer, crossover style with elements of pop harmonies that help it reach a wider audience.

@@BangkokVoiceCoachFreddie hasn’t had as many opportunities in either of his choirs to show his range. Libera have mostly used him as a second treble, and I think it’s the same story for CV Schola Cantorum where he sings alongside Malakai. It’s the reason Libera fans who were lucky enough to hear Freddie perform this piece at Libera’s Christmas concert back in December were so blown away by his voice. We came to the conclusion that he joined Libera at a time when there were already a few well established soloists, and by the time most of them aged out, he was already 13 years old. However, Libera were in Korea a couple of months ago and fans were once again amazed by Freddie’s live performance, because although he began singing in lower registers than normal, he still effortlessly soared up into the God notes like a first treble. He joins the likes of Libera alumni Ben Crawley, Dominik Clarke and the glorious descant specialist Thomas Delgado-Little in the “Sticking Out Like a Sore Thumb” ranks.😉😊

Why the name LIBERA? It's an ancient pagan name. In this circumstances turns blasphemous.

I don’t have an opinion on that.

Understandable; do to the fact that the Catholic Church is overwhelming with factuals against the scriptures. ( Idolatry, repetitions in prayers, obscurantism etc.)

The word means Free in Latin. It’s based on the fact that this choral group doesn’t limit itself to a particular sound like many boys choirs. Robert Prizeman always experimented with different types of music genres and sounds and did a lot of fusion. You should also be aware that although Libera perform many religious pieces, they are not quintessentially a religious group. The original choir was made up of boys from the St Philip’s Baptist Church in Norbury, South London. In the 1990’s they became “Angel Voices”, and that’s when their sound broadened out. They became Libera in the late nineties and although many of the boys now come from Catholic backgrounds, Libera are non denominational, and are mainly described as a choral group rather than a choir.

@@MercurialRed9 Christianity was established by Jesus Christ; the Catholic Church was created by the Romans. In their mythology LIBER and LIBERA was a god of INCEST and FERTILITY. Can be a " coincidence " I'm a former Catholic by the facts founded in the Bible. I love Libera's performances specially for Christmas celebration. God Bless.
