I believe that I referred to Minsk as being in Russia. It is the capital of Belarus though during the setting of this book was in the Soviet Union.

I laughed when Dorothy dies. I laughed when media's said Oz and magical trajectories. I laughed when media's said Oswald brings the girl . Oswald rabbit.. Harvey rabbit.. Harvey Oswald rabbit... What you said about chance as opposed to fate reminded me a lot of Michael Hanake’s film 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance.

This is one gem of a review! You haven't mentioned 11.22.63 by Stephen King, though. Was it on purpose, and if it was, why?

Thanks for the kind words, Francesco. I’ve never gotten around to reading that one from King, though I watched the miniseries with my wife. Did you enjoy the book? Cheers, Jack

@@ramblingraconteur1616 I did, and it was a remarkable read-the first novel I read in years, as I devote much of my reading time to non-fiction. The book is a bit of a masterpiece, although it comes with two flaws, in my opinion: 1) it assumes that there was only one shooter, Lee Harvey Oswald, when we know from records that others were likely involved (see Oliver Stone's JFK and the book it is based on, written by Jim Garrison, the at the time New Orleans attorney who brought to court a man accused of conspiracy to kill the president); 2) there's a section where Lee's life in Dallas is described, before the assassination, which I could have happily done without, as it slows the rhythm down too much. I hope I haven't spoiled it for you! Keep up the extraordinary work you are doing with this channel.

You didn’t like like Delillo’s _Underworld_? I haven’t read _Libra_.
@ramblingraconteur16164 жыл бұрын
Bookish Maybe it’s because I ran track instead of playing baseball? I think DeLillo is more interested in ideas/themes/images than in characters, to a point that some of his books almost feel like they’re about another species. Sometimes it works, but it also feels empty or artificial. I trust that I’ll reread Underworld one year, and maybe my opinion will change. Maybe my contrast would be William Gaddis, whose books are barely comprehensible but have a deeply human heart and humor at their core.
@BookishTexan4 жыл бұрын
@@ramblingraconteur1616 I have to admit that the description of the World Series game definitely hooked me. I've never read Gaddis. I've always been to intimidated by the length of his books and their famous difficulty.

Thanks! Did you mention somewhere that you’re from Cornwall? If I recalled that correctly, are there any really good books set there that you recommend? Best, Jack

@@ramblingraconteur1616 ah ha now you've got me because my own reading is rather narrow, mainly confined to Classics and text books related to my studies... I do belong to a writers' group wherein there would be more widely read people who could recommend. Also, most significantly, the Cornish Gorsedh of Cornish Bards, plus the Cornish Studies Library are associated with excellent works of Cornish literature and historical too. Apart from that, one excellent novelist I can think of is Patrick Gale, who is worth a Google. I myself am just a local, self published children's book author of 'Shanti The Wandering Dog of Sennen and the Land's End' which is loved by tourists, a cosy Cornish coastal story (but no masterpiece). Also, to really get an feel of the West Cornish atmosphere try Dennis Val Baker, possibly Derek Tangye, and of course living close by is John le Carre ...off the top of my head that's all I can think of at the moment. I'm not Cornish myself (except by marriage). Apologies for such a long reply; I can type and talk till the cows come home! ☀️📖

Of course I forgot Daphne Du Maurier's 'Jamaica Inn' for atmosphere 📖

John Malcovitch made a Stage Play from this book Dramatic Literature (Plays) still my favorite Reading material because besides some stage|acting directions it is all DIALOGUE doing away with unnecessary description which is the weakness of any novel!!!!!

The first 50 pages of Underworld feel that way for me. His characters can sometimes feel absolutely inhuman in a way that doesn't quite work and becomes arch and formal. Have you tried Running Dog? Cheers, Jack

Everyone who reads it must Converse Thanks, Noah. I find DeLillo very hit or miss. Sometimes his “characters” just don’t feel remotely like humans. He usually has an interesting idea, but it doesn’t always cohere. Hope you’re well!
