The Migrant Trap (2014): For African migrants Libya used to be a Mecca: a place to find work or get access to Europe. But now the workers who come here are trapped in the political, economic and social chaos engulfing the country.

"It will get worse because of the indifference and carelessness of the Libyan authorities, but also the lack of coordination with Europe", militia leader and immigration officer Abdul Raza tells us. He describes how no efforts are made on the Libyan side to stop the 15,000 migrants a year who attempt the crossing to Europe, which in 2013 resulted in 3,000 deaths. Tripoli has always been a centre for migrants and talk of reconstruction has brought a new wave. But these rumours are in stark contrast to the complete mayhem engulfing the country. "We have big problems. This morning we haven't eaten. Sometimes they hit us. When we are noisy they beat us", a young migrant being kept in Libya's notorious Abu Salim prison tells us. He has been brought here along with hundreds of others and will be kept here for an indefinite amount of time waiting to be deported. "It is for them the most important thing to go to Europe, Lampedusa. They would rather die than stay here in Libya", says a Roman Catholic Nun attempting to offer aid to the increasingly desperate immigrants swelling Libya's cities.

One of the worst points of human nature is thinking the Grass is Greener... There's people in the uk that pay Millions of Pounds to be left alone with a few cattle on a farm, All they want is to get out of the rat race. Yet African people see big houses and big cars and imagine everyone must be sooo happy.

yes sure, but another point of human nature is the failure to understand the conditions these people live in, which is your case; if you live in some of these african countries, when you and your family are facing starvation, specially when there are small children, then you will risk anything to feed them, this has nothing to do with "grass being greener", it's a life and death situation, you just don't get it.

@@nomerompanlaspelotas5812 , Rubbish, tribes have survived for thousands of years and are proud of there heritage, the San people still run after there pray and the Massai still jump. The reason poverty is rife is simply because of African greed and corruption and as an Englishman we have had a past exactly the same, but we changed it, not by running away but fighting for what is right....

@@jezlanejl that has nothing to do with my comment, you stated a point of human nature is thinking the grass is greener, that applies for somebody that moves from, say, France to England or to Italy, but for people in africa almost anywhere outside of Africa is better, and while you touch upon this, you guys complain about invasion when you spent thousands of years not fighting for what is right but by invading and looting other countries, so enjoy it, it takes a little bit of time to get used to them, it was like this in the beginning for France and Italy now french and italian women fuck africans like they are going out of fashion, as soon as they see those 12 inches you can kiss goodbye to the english culture and they are gonna keep coming as climate change makes africa inhabitable.

Thats true but poverty is not a reason to illegally gate crash another nation. Thank God for Libya and Morocco for being firm with them. This will end ugly in a few years or even a decades time when sophisticated European powers will have to use the military to protect their borders. Shame if we have to shoot them like they had to do on the Texan border to illegals but they dont seem to get the point that invading anothers nation is not right. They are NOT refugees.

I know the treatment is not good but the migrants have the cheek to enter another country illegally where they have no idea what its like taking away from the locals who have little already and then they have the cheek to complain about how they are treated and the food not being up to the kind they are used to or would expect to have. This is a foreign country they eat different things to where you come from but even though you are illegal you expect that they will change and look after you differently than they are doing how you expect. That is the same we hear in Europe when according to them they are not being given enough or given living accommodation like they expected in Europe.
