Very interesting video! It seems strange that Gaddafi did as much for the people as he did but then descended gradually and further into megalomania and interfering in other countries. Absolute power corrupts absolutely? If he had just called free elections after helping his people achieve some stability he might be still alive and living comfortably. (I mean, if they mess it up its down to them, right?) I heard rumours his last words were "what did I ever do to you?" And he was stabbed up the rectum with a bayonet. Now that is a slow VERY painful end only fit for the evilist of men and he certainly does not fit that category. But these are rumours. Thanks for doing the research on this subject, it is not very known about by my age group.

Later evidence including information from an lranian defector pointed to it being personally ordered by Ayatollah Khomeini in retaliation for the US terr0rist shoot down of an lranian Airbus passenger jet. However, the US was at the time negotiating for the release of hostages in Lebanon including Terry Waithe and did not want to scuttle a deal by accusing the lranians.

Really thought that a person who is so well educated in other “grey areas” would be a little less bias, and media capitulated as you were in this video. I am a Libyan, lived in Libya, both during and after the 2011. Let me give you some real news, Libya across all aspects, from educational literacy, to women’s rights, to medical healthcare, to infrastructure (hell be even built the worlds largest irrigation system), to GDP, to the general standard of living rose exponentially. It is true, Libya does have large oil reserves but there is so much more to it. Name and case Nigeria and Venezuela. Food, farming, education, housing and pretty much everything was insanely subsidised. This video lacks the critical argumentation that your viewers so often ponder over. Have another go. Dig a little deeper, not everything is what it may seem on today’s highly skewed media surface. He was a better leader than any western country has today, for he was for his people, a true socialist. Yes, some of his acts were bizarre, but under his rule people were happier. Way happier. Now wages are non existent, people and oil are smuggled out of the country on a daily basis, the largest slave market in the world exists here and elections are far from fair. People are starved of everyday necessities. There are fuel shortages, power cuts on a daily basis and unemployment is the highest it has been since the 1970s. Gaddafi refused the petrodollar, wanted to unite African and Arab nations. What gives the west the moral high ground to dictate how a country is? Are they really that apathetic about humanitarianism? I have a million words to write but this is not the place, nor am I competent enough to truly explain; for history is a far better teller than I.

Having sailed beneath one of his "Line of Death" campaigns, pirate is the better description for the lands of Northern Africa in general. Specifically the Barbary region still attempts to retain the literal piracy by changing their international boundaries beyond what the ENTIRE WORLD regards as "International" waters. Seizing ships and selling into slavery their crews. It in itself is a large part of their culture in this region, and still one aspect of their past that they still cannot resolve and move past and through. How many more carrier fleets will it take to destroy the proxy war equip from Russia and CCP to prove its point again.? I am sure that it wil evolve even further now, time will tell if they can mature above their previous levels of "Barbarism."

That seemed to be kind of the point though, that Libya under al-Gaddafi did and experienced some amazing things, but also some horrifying things. But how do you properly weigh one against the other? How do you praise someone for their great works, knowing the committed atrocities? How do you denounce someone for their atrocities knowing they did great works? Does one diminish the other? I think most err on the side of caution, and while acknowledging the good, focus on the bad as something of a moral standard. Though this does end up leading to apparent bias and risks missing the full picture. Yet if one were to focus too much on the more positive aspects, they would inevitably be demonized and accused of glorifying someone who also committed atrocities, or, by extension, supporting those atrocities. I think this channel definitely took the approach they likely seemed to be safest while still giving as much information as they could with as little bias as they could muster, while likely knowing it would come off as biased and present a somewhat incomplete picture. I will say that I highly doubt they think the west has any sort of moral high ground in this or any conversation. Simon, especially, since he's from the UK and lord knows what they've done to basically half the world. Nor would I ever claim the west has any moral high ground myself, as an American. My country lives and breathes committing war crimes while denouncing others for theirs. It's just really fucking hard to present topics like this without missing the mark at least a little bit for some people.

As a Libyan... i can say that what many people simply do not know about the Libyan situation, and is probably one of the main if not the main reason behind why the country is still in chaos today more than a decade after the revolution, is that in 2011 few months after the revolution started in February, Ghaddafi's regime made a "last ditch effort" in the form of 3 things: -they opened up many prisons and released the prisoners (many were dangerous criminals & terrorists) into the population. -The usage of media and propaganda to fuel tribalism and hatred between different regions & cities within of the country. -they started distributing firearms and weapons to civilians en masse, this alone has lead to an astronomical increase in the amount of firearm related crimes and robberies, considering that before 2011 the population of libya was mostly gun-free.

A good overview and perhaps an appetiser for some deeper dives? I served, lived and worked in Libya from 2009 through to 2012 and saw first hand Ghaddafi’s insane regime and how much he was feared and hated. I was in the middle of the chaos of the 17 Feb uprising and what followed. Perhaps some more in-depth looks in to the Barbary Wars? The Italian Colonisation? Lockerbie (and the Iranian/Palestinian hypothesis) and the current failed state/civil war will all make good topics? Thanks again Simon

Unfortunately there are several examples of nations that were only held together by an iron fist (Yugoslavia and Iraq for example) that explode when control is taken away too fast. Gradual release of power is the best way. But too often this leads to attempts at a power grab by the new "leaders" who either don't really know how to run a nation, or end up trying to settle old scores.

lt was personally ordered by Ayatollah Khomeini in retaliation for the US shooting down an lranian Airbus passenger jet. The US was negotiating with lran backed groups for the release of hostages including Terry Waithe held in Lebanon and didn't want to scuttle the deal by accusing lran. A Scot appointed case review committee decided that the case was seriously flawed and evidence insufficient, even some of the victims' families believe it wasn't the Libyans.
