“How do two brothers get into the nail care business?” This is the single most common question people ask us. There’s a long and rocky version but we’ll give you the short one. We have our fearless and unconventional mother, Young Salo, to thank. With a single-minded entrepreneurial spirit, she decided to start her own business at the age of 49. She had a passion for the nail industry and we did everything in our power to support her. In the end, this is a family business.
Greg, the older brother, became a licensed nail technician after switching gears from fire fighter’s training. He is energy personified and has a true passion for developing the best professional nail care products and education. Habib is the younger brother. He jumped in a few years later; taking a detour from medical school and a life in music. He brings his own creative mind for business, marketing and strategy. Unexpectedly, we are a perfect team.
Today, more than 20 years later, Young Nails Inc., is a professional nail care manufacturing company exporting to over 40 countries worldwide and distributing domestically to over 3000 stores. We’re respected for our next-level product innovation and education. Our mission is to bring you the best quality products and we’ll show you how to use them with incredible results. It’s really that simple.
Welcome to the Young Nails family!

Very true or they wouldn't make it so expensive for a barely there lisence. I feel it don't take much schooling for what they teach you that actually gives you the license to practice so why is that license so hard to obtain? Or are people creating actual nail schools that we can get licensed/certified?

Yes they teach you actual nail services of course they do they are required to, but you will not gain skill from going to school and you will not learn beyond the very basics. I feel like everyone wants to skate around this inconvenient fact, but if you are not licensed you have no business calling yourself a nail technician. Definitely channels like young nails and many others on KZbin are super essential to become skilled in all the best techniques so you can excel!

@@vcamie8755 No they don’t, they only teach absolute basics. They will teach you how to do a basic manicure, and about sanitization, but absolutely nothing about acrylic or gel, nothing about any type of enhancement. I’ve known 3 people who graduated from our local cosmetology school who told me this, I’ve called the few schools I can find and asked them directly. They teach a basic nail manicure and that’s it. I have no issue getting licensed-but this seems absurd to pay this much to learn nothing. We are talking around $20,000-not just a few grand. Not to mention all the precious time spent on hair and skin, all of which I have no interest in. If I find anything about I’ll update this post. Honestly I would love to just take classes from business like young nails, and get licensed that way but unfortunately I don’t think it works like that.

I was an avid nail client. Since quarantine, with the help of your videos I self taught myself acrylic. And what helped was that you sell to non licensed nail techs. I think you guys should really touch on/give a little more credit to nail enthusiasts because we self taught ourselves and seeked out the knowledge. I’m not saying licensed nail techs don’t, but the only reason I’m not licensed yet is money for school. I love your videos but I think there is a community you aren’t speaking to yet you sell products to them. I love you guys and your products this is just a little of my opinion.

I totally agree! I'm sure most are enthusiasts rather than licensed but those are the ones that started from nothing with nothing and now showing work like pros but unfortunately don't have a license. But the person that just got out of school that has a license don't know anything yet but they can at least take money for services. If you've been doing nails for a very long time and have a skill but no license then you can't get paid for what you do and some licensed nail techs don't like the self taught artist's calling themselves nail techs. Why they're sensitive about it I don't know. They should lift each other up! Make it cheaper to get that license since they do t teach you much and you'll still have a long ways to go before you get to where you're comfortable with a nice clientele.

@@melissavega6243 I completely agree. And until I am licensed I consider myself and enthusiast. I guess what bothers me is their lack of credit to a nail enthusiast. @@melissavega6243 I agree that school should be less expensive because it’s not fair. I was lucky enough to live in a city where they had numerous nail programs and I found the cheapest one. I learned very basic skills and still had to put in the same amount of effort as self taught techs learning nail skills from videos, classes, one-on-ones to better my craft. What I’m happy I learned about is about nail disorders, diseases, which products are safe to use and how to safely use them, disinfection, and the nail structure which is def a must to know regardless if you are licensed are not because you are working on the public, and your health and your clients health, is the upmost important thing. I don’t put down anyone but some nail techs may feel like it’s not fair that some people get to call themselves nail techs when they had to put in the money and time in securing the license. Then you have people who are doing amazing nails for $20-30 (that should be priced more) because they are unlicensed and now it’s not only a disservice to themselves but other techs because some individuals think they should get Instagram style nails for that price. Regardless if your licensed or not know your worth when it comes to doing nails

I'm in New Zealand. Legally at the moment you don't need either to practice. Watching this tho I would almost go so far as to say there's a third area. Licensed, certified and qualified. Alot will think certified is the same as qualified but within my studies and education to get my qualifications I learned sanitizing, cleanliness, anatomy and physiology and the basic principle into nails. When I did brand education (ie certification) I learned alot more on how a specific product worked, molded tips, chemical compound vs allergy reactions etc. Licensing almost seems a basic step compared to these. Licensing is almost like advertising responsibility as a professional

I’m so glad you guys brought this topic up. I live in MI and have been a licensed cosmetologist for 20 years. When I went to school we had to learn all the basics to pass state boards. For me I have tried to take advantage of all I learned in school with hair, nails, skin, ect so that I can make as much money as possible. Long story short, I got burned out and stopped doing it all together but still maintained my license. In the last 6 month or so I have been super interested in doing acrylic nails. What would you say to someone like me who has only dabbled with acrylic but wants to get more into it as a possible carrier? I have ordered powders, brushes the whole bit to practice as much as possible. Would you recommend I taking as many course’s and classes like the one YN’s offers when things open up since I already have a license or start over and go back to school?

The two of these work well together in the industry,is my undying belief. 😂😂😂 On a more serious note, I agree that most schools in the US teach the bare minimum (enough to pass state boards) and that it is up to the tech to continue their education, which will be a lifelong commitment. So grateful to the YN team for providing opportunities for this ongoing education at very reasonable prices!

I'm going to check out a Nail Tech school tomorrow. 😊😊😊 It costs $4000 for a 300-hour course in the Tampa Bay area. I'm so excited and thankful I found your channel. I'm in my 50s but very hip and fun so this should be a new exciting journey for me. Thank you for all your wonderful videos! I'm too young to stay retired. On to my next career!!! 😂😊

Great video! Initially I was looking for one that breaks down the differences between nail manicurist vs advanced manicurist. Unfamiliar with other states requirements here in Ohio prospects need 200 hours for the nail manicurist program whereas the advanced manicurist program requirement is an additional 100 hours. It's my understanding that the 200 hour course permits technicians to work ONLY in the salons while the advance manicurist allows the tech to become an instructor, manager, etc. Can you post another video to cover the differences? I'm also curious to know if an advanced manicurist course is really needed when a nail tech already has an associate or bachelor's degrees in business management.

There are many great nail techs that are not licensed or certified that have a great understanding with the preparements, safety and cleaniness. The internet has many great videos and websites that provides many information and contents. In fact, their are many techs that do and are better than license tech.

What about companies like jamberry or color street nail wraps . And as someone who has thought about selling the wraps because I love wraps especially the color Street gel wraps . I was wondering will I get in trouble for selling them because they do explain how to put them on ? But I do mine and she does hers . So no one is doing anyone’s but their own .

I’m outside the US and I don’t *need* to be licensed OR certified 😳 Other provinces require certification, but not mine. If I’m running a business I have to pass a health unit inspection, that’s it. Which is kind of crazy when you think about it but that’s what it is. That said, I want certification. I want to make myself more marketable. On that note, are there any plans for an OWC in Ontario, Canada when travelling is a thing again? Lol

I'm not sure about outside of California. But in California it doesn't matter if the client is paying or not. You may not perform services on a human in a salon period. I actually know people who had to pay fines because they were practicing when state board walked in. Client even had a drivers license explaining that the person doing services was just making him look good for a party, no money was going to be exchanged. State board said if said services were done from home it would have been a different story. *bam* $1,000 fine plus... Short story. Dont practice in public unless you're licensed.

Hello 👋🏼 Canadian here. Just updating you. In British Columbia you don’t need a license but you must be a fully trained nail tech or apprenticeship under a licensed nail tech. In the rest of Canada you must be fully trained AND be fully licensed to provide services. I’m finishing up my Full License Nail Tech course but I must be able to pass our province’s cosmetology associations test in order to be able to apply for your license to be able to accept money for our services. Just clearing this up.

The problem I am having is that where we live both cosmetology schools do not offer the manicurist program. TDLR wants you to choose one of their listed schools in Texas which are way out of our area so they don't make it easy for you to get a license in that field. It should be offered at every cosmetology school.

I am sorry to say - Not all of that information is true. In Canada, we have both, Certified and Licensed. In Alberta, Nail Techs are Certified. There are 2 types of Certification: Government Certified or Beauty Supply - Nail manufacture Certified. Government means you went to a school that their academic program was approved by the government, the government feels after this schooling you can work in that profession. Certification that way allows you to walk into any beauty supply company and buy nail products, any brand. Beauty Supply or Nail Manufacture means you learned right from the nail brand. These can be anything from a 2 day class to 6, 8, or 12 week classes, where you met with an instructor who uses that product, and the supplier deem good enough to teach, once a week for your course duration. This kind can only buy from that suppler, another brand and company does not have to recognize their training. Some salons may hire you, but usually ones in small town as they know there is no local schooling. In larger cites, usually only non standard salons as they don't care about standards, at all. For both kinds of Certification there is No board exams, and No fees associated with your certification, not at grad, and not yearly. Not ever... Now, In Nova Scotia Nail Techs are Licensed. They had to go to a school where the Government approved their program. At programs end, you take final exams, if you pass you get your License. There are fees for the exam, and the License. You will also pay a yearly fee to keep active in the industry, you must also take 1 course per year to continue your education. This can be a Nail course or a Business course that is applicable to your industry. Each Province in Canada is different, and what is allowed in one province does not carry over to another, so being certified in Alberta, does not allow you to practice in Nova Scotia. If you want to practice in Nova Scotia, you will need to show all your education, work experience, and have recommendation that validate you. They may grandfather you in, allowing you to just pays the required fees and start working. Or they may feel you do not have enough education and or experience and you must go to one of their schools, and restart. I hope that all made sense, and clears it up - for Canadians anyway
