Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman are both superb; that Alana never acted on screen before is astonishing- WHAT a multi-talented polymath! Cooper is a true chip off his mighty father's shoulder, a huge career ahead. I was born in 1973 when the events take place, so this film makes me wish I had been born in California and not crappy Croydon!

Mark sums up the “controversies” around this film so beautifully. They can’t be together but they sort of are. It’s messy and it’s not really ok, but it’s also not harmful to anyone and they’re both getting what they need amongst the unique chaos of their lives. The performances are so special. The needle drops are absolute all timers. It’s a complete triumph.

It's hard to fathom that neither lead had acted before in a film. (Alana was in many HAIM videos but Cooper Hoffman has no credits other than this film on IMDB. Both totally crushing it. My favourite PTA film, closely followed by Punch-drunk Love. It's funny, cringy, tense, weird, lovely, great music, beautifully shot and it's just lovely that Alana's whole family in Licorice Pizza is her actual family. Still can't believe how good Alana and Cooper are.

Saw it again tonight. Took my seventeen year old daughter to it. I thought she'd love it like I had. She didn't and I suspect I know why. She's begining to live out her golden moments while I can only look back on mine. The difference is that I know how precious and fleeting they are.

He makes corny advances towards the woman and we've lost count of how many times she's gently turned him down. If anyone was going to find it hilarious I thought I'd be her. They say Gen Z'ers are easily offended whereas Gen X'ers shrug and laugh at the absurd.

@@CorbCorbin There's many characteristics particularly when looking at different eras of Hollywood in retrospective. It's always harder to pinpoint the trends of a current era. PTA comes from the postmodern 90s Hollywood, though he's never fit into any specific mold really in my opinion.

I think the film is so subtle, moving, and beautiful. It’s like you’re naturally watching this friendship between the two characters grow and by the end it just kind of melts your heart. I think it could definitely win Best Picture

Saw this film last night, and have mixed feelings about it. Loved the nostalgic feel of it, how it looked, the use of music, and the performances from the leads (though I think Alana Haim definitely stood out higher than Cooper Hoffman here). However, unlike Kermode I didn't fully buy into the chemistry between the two, and so the meandering plot didn't really work for me in terms of building up the relationship between them, I viewed them purely as episodic scenes (though some, like Bradley Cooper's, were really fun). I was also a bit dissatisfied with the ending, I would have preferred it to be bit a more ambiguous. A fun film, but not up there with his best, for me.

It's kind of sad we are so ill-afforded opportunities to still see actual FILMs made by FILM-makers. On that score Licorice Pizza is, in of itself, already a minor miracle. Of course I will reserve all judgement until after I see it. But PTA's achilles heel, in my opinion, is his inability to reel himself in while telling a story. Boogie Nights is a great film and certainly plays it loose with its narrative structure. But there's still trajectory, a sense of purpose that keeps us moving with his characters. When PTA decides to amble he quickly lose headway and things can get frustratingly incoherent. Inherent Vice and the Phantom Thread are nice to look at and have great performances. But PTA's almost aggressive lack of urgency or purpose left me...indifferent. He's still probably the best director working and I hope Licorice Pizza is fantastic.

I dont understand why people like this movie so much. It is beautiful, charming, the whole atmosphere is great.. but. There is no real story, it starts off with them kind of together but not really, then one of them has a thing with someone else and the other ist Jealous, or they hit an external roadblock of some kind. Rinse and repeat until it is over. Nothing is learned, there is no overarching story other than will they or wont they. It gave me nothing. And the worst part is, i dont believe their age difference for a second. In fact in the beginning i thought she had lied about her age. He looks much older than 14 and she could easily be much younger than 25. I feel like people like it for the nostalgia of it all but thats simply not enough to make a good movie.

But it's that kinetic energy handeled by the more mature and considered Anderson. To me it's like a film the younger Anderson would concieve, but only the older Anderson could make. There's that theme of old and younger again.

It almost felt like PTAnderson is making a Richard Linklater movie, in the sense that its a feel good movie, and even though nothing goes wrong in a movie like Dazed and Confused by Linklater, and nothing goes horribly wrong here either, but in every scene there is this ominous feeling that something CAN go really sideways. Its surprisingly intense for a feelgood movie, which makes it really special.

I love PTA but was very disappointed with this movie. Maybe I'll have to see it again because I remember not liking the master too much the first time I saw it but now love it after seeing it several times. I just kept waiting for something to happen in LP. 3/4 of the way through I remember thinking to myself whats the point of all this. Water beds, now pinball machines, jon peters is here and gone, a mayor pops up. Maybe a second viewing knowing now its sort of episodic with its structure, I can enjoy its charm that every critic has seemed to have felt. It feels like everyone took a drug and are feeling the wonderful effects but mine was a dud.

After a second viewing I enjoyed it more but still lower tier in PTAs filmography. The acting from the two new leads is tremendous, visually its beautiful. I don't know how PTA does it. He's one of the only directors I can think of where he's 70s period pieces actually look like they could be filmed in the 70s. Especially during the first waterbed scene. The cameos are all great and probably the best scenes in the movie. I don't like the last 20 mins of the movie. It drags for me and the ending is awful.

I love this film, it's my pick for best of the year, and I see AFI thinks so too. Mark's review right on about the tone and the amazing lead characters. So, I may be biased because I've hung out with the Haim sisters, and I'm a huge PTA fan. I've seen the film twice and loved it more the 2nd time. There's not a dull moment. There are "controversies", but nothing big really. The age difference - they're not dating, there's no consummations; they're friends who date other people. Insulting Asians - Jerry (played by John Michael Higgins) makes a fool of himself, not Asians. My Japanese friend could not stop laughing. I understand the concern about violence towards Asians, but let's not get over-sensitive about accents, considering all the other nationalities which are imitated. One reviewer said there are no good males in the film? Huh!? There are idiotic people, but no bad people in the entire film. There were times that I was nervous for Alana's situations, but Sean Penn as Holden was a perfect gentleman, and the Mayor (Benny Safdie) candidate's dinner invitation wasn't about making romantic overtures. I am very happy to see Alana and her sisters cross into filmmaking.

Great film. A wild ride. Totally and utterly unpredictable, as is their relationship. The whole cast are stellar, even John C Reilly in his tiny cameo as Herman Munster! Its so great to see Sean Penn on screen again. A beautifully atmospheric tribute to two people who don't quite fit in but are all the better for it. Sorry but PTA has never ever produced anything other than fascinating.

Just as a movie in its structure etc. I think the more art-house film-minded seem to find sub-textual meaning that they see as very deeply moving, while on a surface-level to others, it is boring, disordered or pointless. Both are probably right, given the perspective they’re viewing it from.

It’s a masterpiece. I’m obsessed with “Licorice Pizza”. Paul Thomas Anderson is a truly brilliant screenwriter and director. I cannot stop thinking about this film. National Board of Review got it right, voting it as best picture and Anderson as best director. I know it’s not going to win best picture at the Oscars because the voting membership isn’t smart enough to recognize such unadulterated brilliance. I know I’m being effusively over the top in my praise and the only other best picture nominee I’ve seen is “West Side Story” and I don’t care. This may wind up being my favorite movie of all time in the history of cinema.

Saw Licorice Pizza which I enjoyed but anyone know why William Holden charecter was called Jack Holden in the movie? He even talks about The Bridges at Toko-Ri which William Holden starred in real life with Grace Kelly. Other living real people like Jon Peters are portrayed.

Absolutely! I spent a lot of 2019 in the theater seeing great films like Joker, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Irishman and even a horrible one like Rambo: Last Blood. I didn't go to the movies for a while due to Covid and not seeing anything that interested me enough to go see. However, Licorice Pizza was the one that got me in the theater again and I loved it! I also saw one of my absolute all-time favorites last night, The Godfather. It is back in theaters for the 50 year anniversary. That was a nice treat and a special night.

Just got back from the film and loved it!! But shouldn’t shake past the age difference…couldn’t stop thinking about how people would be up in arms of the genders were reversed. It’s a film about the romantic relationship between a 15 year old boy and a 25 year old woman. I do not know why they had to do that to serve the plot. He could of turned 18 as the film progressed or something. Surprised PTA got away with it

IDK. For me, it wasn’t an issue because the movie made it clear that they’re not an aspirational or even a functional romantic pairing. The chaos of their lives draw them to each other in their own points of view and we’re left with an open ended moment of bliss with the very real possibility that it’s a toxic house of cards that’ll topple at any moment (which is also how Phantom Thread ended)

Just got out of the BFI, I really didn’t like it. If you changed it to be a young woman pursuing an older man perhaps the critics opinions would change. Perhaps it just felt too drawn out or the the unnecessary Japanese restaurant scenes but this movie just didn’t sit right with me. Also what was the point of Bradley Coopers character? Was it just to get another big name on the bill?

I think if you're already a big Anderson fan, then this movie will probably click with you. The story and ambitiousness of the film reminds me of the young and cocky director of Magnolia, but the film itself is made by the more mature and considered Anderson. How nice to see so much of his Dad in the face and manerisms of Cooper Hoffman. The old man would have been very proud.

I think you have to watch a lot of PTA movies twice to get the full appreciation because the first time is kind of overwhelming but the second time you can appreciate the big picture a lot more. Inherent Vice was kind of similar. PTA always manages to get the most amazing performances out of his actors and he's worked with so many great actors to start with.

It was a real palette cleanser to me after the action and superhero films of late. Heartwarming, non-offensive and just well....nice. Also the controversy around the age difference is ridiculous. People making a mountain out of a molehill.

I really like Alana Haim look. She is like that ugly hot chick that everyone looks past. And the dude is the typical chubby white kid that everyone wouldn’t mind rooting for. The fact that it’s a romantic flick turns me off. The reverse of this would be American Beauty. But in American Beauty it’s a fantasy and in this their romance turns into reality. I hate movies predicated on the relationship of two people to make the film. It seems like a coming of age love story of a boy and a grown woman. I really can’t get my head past that. & she’s hanging out with 15 years olds trying to find her youth and way? The saving grace for this film is 70’s nostalgia and average looking actors.

Just saw this film tonight. Loved it but have always held PTA in high esteem. Glad Mark liked it or I might have fallen out with him over it. Give me this kind of film over the tedious formulaic 007 franchise or boring Marvel blockbusters Hollywood keeps on churning out.

. . . And just how b-o-r-i-n-g to a point of tedium was that umpteenth 'Bond' ; my guest fell asleep and upon awaken after 20 minutes , asked " Have I missed much?.." " Not one iota of interest " said I . Overblown - both actuarilly and figuratively, in every sense . As for that other continuum tosh being pedalled by 'Hollywood ' ... what is it up to now ?.. 'Star Wars 8 or 9 ?.. never bothered with the kiddie fodder that was the original. A couple of decades or more ago , I could be a 30 films a year that were worth watching out of Hollywood. It is a mere 5 or 6 a year - at most , from La - La Land this past decade or so .

Horrible film that has nothing interesting to say. Hoffman doesn't have his father's acting ability and was totally unbelievable as someone who supposedly has charm but just comes across as dull and obnoxious. Forgettable scenes go nowhere and the point it is trying to makes gets hammered home repeatedly. The overall premise and the scene with the Chinese women were just odd and yet those who complain about similar scenes in films from the 60s and 70s now think this is acceptable and comedy gold. Love PTA films but this is his worst by a long way.
