What age the ones called that have more than one kind of mapping like the two new 360 and Dreeme that don't hit anyting? I think I've fallen in love with that technofu and have my mind set on it but wondering what all is available that doesn't hit anything like those that I may not have seen or deleted and didn't realize it did that.

So the robots that don't hit any objects usually are the Shark AI, 360 S10, DreameTech L10 Pro, Ecovacs T8/N8 that uses either the AIVI technology or True Depth technology. Lastly the Roborock S6 MaxV is a one that can avoid hitting objects.

That's a really good video. I went straight from my first random-bounce Roomba in 2009 to a camera-nav i7+ this year with nothing in between so I didn't even know that gyro-nav was a thing. Given how cheap those sensors are now that they are being manufactured by the billions for smart phones (maybe not literally billions but it can't be far off) I wonder whether something like the i7 and/or s9 also have a gyro & accelerometer as a cross check. With Shark doing its camera-nav self-emptying-bin IQ model for $450 I wonder how iRobot will respond. Obviously the court action is iRobot's first response but I wonder how it might affect the Roomba product roadmap and/or pricing going forward. Personally I want the best robot I can get so I'd rather iRobot responded by stepping things up a gear on the spec to further justify the price premium rather than dropping prices to try and compete. I'd love to see an s10 with upward-looking-camera plus LIDAR so that it can cross-check room layouts that it gets from the cameras with what it sees from laser-mapping the walls and generally make it more precise, better with objects, happier in the dark etc. If Shark can do a camera-based robot for the price it does and Roborock can do a LIDAR-based robot for the price it does then iRobot really should be able to do a robot that includes both at the s9 price point. If done properly that would be one heck of a robot!

Yeah it will be interesting to see iRobot next Robot, maybe called the s10??? Anyways for this type of environment I think having a dual Camera looking up at the Ceiling and a Lidar system is the way to go. The robot could verify that it in the correct room by looking at the ceiling which doesn’t change and use the Lidar system for accurate navigation. Yes most modern robot vacuums have a Gryo, 3 Axis Accelerometer, and Wheel Encoders to track distance traveled. Thanks For Watching!!!

The s9 already has an added forward-facing static LIDAR array to help it more accurately map the area immediately in front of it, so I wouldn't be surprised if iRobot is able to bring the accuracy of its maps up to LIDAR levels by combining the information from its two systems, just with software updates alone. I like their idea of a supplementary static LIDAR because it maintains the durability advantage that static camera-based systems have while at the same time taking advantage of LIDAR accuracy.

HAst - good point. Thanks. I did know about that forward sensor but am still a bit suspicious of it right now with the stories I hear of s9 running full speed into obstacles. Better I think with later firmware but fully fixed? Not sure but you’re right that if/when it’s working reliably with the firmware the ability for sensor integration is significant. Following on my comment about how cheap gyros & accelerometers have got I wonder what the cost of that fixed forward LIDAR is. Replacing other IR bumper sensors with similar fixed LIDAR would give it plus/minus 45-ish degree off-axis views and maybe allow a future model to do stuff like wall following better with minimal case changes and without going to the complexity of a Roborock/Neato top-spinning sensor so perhaps for relatively modest incremental cost.

Personally I would prefer the lidar system because of the fact that it gives you so such accurate maps but one of the things that I know of that confuses both lidar and camera systems is floor-to-ceiling mirrors. When I first moved into this houseI had the Roomba clean the room that had the floor-to-ceiling mirrors and the Roomba kept cleaning over and over and over again as if it kept thinking it was cleaning another roomthe rubber I guess for got kind of confused by the floor to ceiling mirrors cuz I did think that it was seeing into another room and it was wondering why I couldn't get in there but it was able to move on and finish cleaning and then go back to its dock unlike the Roomba.I said before the lighter because of the no-go lines in zones cuz I hated buying the virtual walls for the Roomba because each virtual wall for the Roomba is like $60 and the no-go lines/zones in the roborock app are free.

Andrew Eslick Nice explanation, I agree that using the Roomba lighthouse can get expensive and take AA batteries. I have a similar issue with the floor to ceiling glass sliding door. On the Roborock it extends that area on the map even though the robot can never get to that area. The Roomba is not affected by it. I personally find the no go zones on the Roborock better, more accurate and I can add multiple ones in a given area without having the robot get confused.

@@RobotMasters I do have the issues with the river rock extending the map when it sees the mirrors but at least it is able to realize that it can't go to that area and move on and it won't continue to clean forever until the battery dies. when I put a bed in front of the floor to ceiling mirrors it didn't get as confused but it's still kind of got hung up. The roborock will realize that it can't get to that area and continue on.

Love the video. Not the sound. My Roborock v1 has lidar and it still works great. The down fall is I have a Chinese version and it no longer works on new app. I have to use old app and can't change Chinese language however, this vac has been through hell, including dog poop and getting completely washed in water. Gyro sucks. I have i3.

Lidar is typically better overall in terms of performance and navigation. At one point durability was an issue with Lidar systems, but have not been an issue with my personal experience.
