Can you talk about the album Above, by Mad Season? It's an excellent album and no one seems to really talk too much about it. It has Layne Staley from AIC on vocals and includes Mark Lanegan on a few tracks. It also includes Mike Mccready from Pearl Jam on guitar, Barrett Martin on drums, and John Baker Saunders on bass.

John Dywer is going to go down in the history book. I can't remember the exact comparison, but I remember Ty Segall saying that in "years to come John Dywer will be as legendary..." and I totally agree. His work ethic, his live energy and his guitar playing is seriously influential. He truly is a titan of 21st century rock and roll.

I would not be surprised in the slightest. He really is a visionary musician but seems like the kind of dude you could have a drink with and not be "starry" at all. I mean, he could be the most massive arsehole and his legacy would be assured...let's be honest, he's not the most original or dazzling lyricist but part of me thinks he's more into using words as sound and not really for their meanings but his music speaks for itself.

Anyway, yeah he seems to take the Kevin Sheilds approach where he creates a wall of atmosphere more reliant on the music and energy rather the lyrics ideas. Although the lyrics to I come from the mountain are pretty damn catchy!

I saw them almost ten years ago for free, didn't know them yet, and before the show started a boomer told me "I saw Motorhead, I saw The Rolling Stones, I saw every big band. Get ready, this is the most rock'n'roll show you'll ever see". Having seen around a hundred shows, mostly punk and metal, at that time I thought "OK grandad, enjoy you rock'n'roll show"... And then they starting playing. And to this day I still haven't seen anything more rock'n'roll. It's pure energy, it melts your face off from start to finish, and the crowd instantly goes insane. One of my best shows ever. Never miss them if they're coming near you.

Dwyer and the Osees are an absolute monster of a band, I love how he just presents what he wants to do every time, avoiding criticism of his work by turning off comments on all their videos. It’s just a mix of punk, thrash, prof, metal, psych rock it’s great. Protean threat was my favorite album but like face stabber, orc, smote reverser, mutilator defeated at last and the new a foul form are all good they’re all different

Hey mate. I just wanted to talk a bit more on the connection between king gizz and ohsees. Back when gizz were just starting up, ohsees were a pretty big influence in the underground scene around where we are from. The influence definitely bled over into gizzards early work. Even onstage persona was a thing from ohsees. Later though they developed a style all their own, but did end up working with the band.

Man, I scored, the cheapest, *cleanest* copy of Limited Edition a few weeks back, record and the sleeve are both NM, plays beautifully. I just love "Gomorrah", "T.V. Spot", "Empress And The Ukraine King" and "Mother Upduff" and the "E.F.S" tracks on there are really cool. For an album consisting of, basically, "bits 'n bobs" it hangs together really well

Stars as a crazy drum/keys-that-may-or-may-not-be-flutes, treated viola (?) and eventually bass and what sounds like "found sound"...then goes really quiet with just a slow guitar motif and bass motif? Hahah I just described most of the album! I got it on now to make sure! What you been thinking to the Mute/Spoon coloured vinyl remasters? I was really pleased with the gold Future Days and pink vinyl Delay, they sound so good, and the fact that Irmin Schmidt is involved in the remastering, well, you know you're getting fidelity as close as they can make it in terms of verisimilitude...fantastic sounding records. Particularly pleased with the bass attack and lack of "drop off" on those remasters, from the green vinyl Ege Bamyasi to the orange Tago-Mago...they've supplanted my earlier reissues of said albums. Just so fucking good.

@@tylerhowie1304 Honestly not really, I've always wanted to make one because I've been a fan of Osees for almost 3 years now and have heard all their records a few times over. That's part of the reason why they're so cool to check out: their discography is so expansive and layered that you can't just do a surface level look at it, like Lie did here. You really gotta make an almost hour long video, and even then that's not FULLY in depth.

I think most osees stuff is in D standard (apart from maybe smote reverser) with the low string dropped occasionally for songs, this'd make the dream much easier to play than how you did it since you can just move the major chord shape on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th strings about instead of having to change shape

John Dwyer used to listen to metal, he used to like metal. Sure, he liked The Misfits and Black Flag and other hardcore bands, but... to say that metal wasn't cool is disingenuous. I know, I was there. We were listening to Metallica, Flotsam and Jetsam, Voivod, Metal Church.... Danzig (where do you think he got the haircut?). I introduced him to The Can, so you got that right...he was and is a big fan. But he also listened to a lot of Pink Floyd and the early Floyd sound is instantly recognizable in a lot of his songs, especially Syd Barrett era Floyd. An influence many probably don't know about is Thin White Rope, they were in heavy rotation in those late 80's, early 90's days; along with a great deal of Skinny Puppy. John has had a lot of influences, and if you listen... you can hear them. Tell me if you can hear Blue Oyster Cult? :)

So who commits the notes to the staff? Many modern musicians don't take the time or simply don't know how to write their compositions onto sheet music in the language of music theory. So who or what puts the notes of those riffs to the musical staff? Is it a person or is it software? If so, what software program is it?

HOLY SHIT YOU DID ONE OF MY FAVOURITE BANDS!!! Are you digging the Live At The Chapel SF 10/02 RSD release?! I am! Coachwhips' Bangers Vs. Fuckers LP was my second favourite LP of 2004 too, they made The White Stripes sound like The Carpenters (hey don't get me wrong, I love The Carpenters!) ! And I'm crazy for Damaged Bug's Bunker Funk album, it's like a scuzz-punk version of a Can record, glad you mentioned the masters of kosmiche musik (I don't say "krautrock" 'cause it was coined by British journalists and seems jingoistic at best and racist at the worst--that's just my opinion don't all pile on--I know lots of other people who feel that way too)! I really dig the OCS psych-folk stuff, and I've been caning the hell out of Brigid Dawson And The Mother's Network Ballet Of Apes LP. It's like an alternate-universe torch-song avant-jazz record and is just lovely. Another big influence on JPD was the UK's Medway Garage Scene--look up all those Billy Childish garage/psychobilly/punk rock bands like Thee Headcoats, Thee Milkshakes, Thee Mighty Caesars etc. etc. Most fans agree that's where he got the idea of usin the "Thee" prefix which coincides with the bands most popular releases and Dwyer is/was big into the UK independent punk/post-punk scene. Hehe you're definitely way more knowledgable in their discography and facts than me. I guess that's what happens when your band becomes your favorite band. You just get obsessed with checking out all the side projects and little known facts. Kosmiche musik? That's interesting that you choose to use that label. But yea i guess that's the german and original way of labeling krautrock. And i'm yet to check out more of their folky stuff. I did check out their DVD Hounds of Foggy Notion. @@LieLikesMusic Thanks for the reply, Lie! Tbh I've only *really* been into Osees since the sub announced Castle Face were putting out The Fall Live In St. Helens 1981 LP. So that was probably just under a year ago. So I'm checking out the sub, and I keep thinking: "John Dwyer, John Dwyer, where do I know that name from?!!?" I searched Discogs and, as mentioned, realised he'd been behind my second-favourite LP of 2004, Bangers Vs. Fuckers, and this was like the HEIGHT of the "garage rock/blues-rock" revival with all those one-hit wonders and then the longer-lasting bands whose music evolved; like White Stripes, Black Keys, The Strokes etc. And that little CD-R was like 18 minutes long, just fast, scuzzed-out garage punk (no bass, just guitar, drums and a little keyboard and JPD shouting "YEAH!!" and "OH BABY!!!" and variations thereof). Tl;dr--Bangers Vs. Fuckers is a PROPER FACE-MELTER. Anyway I started asking for recs (everyone on their sub is lovely), started buying the records and checking out live performances on YT and I was hooked! I have The Hounds Of Foggy Notion LP, I'd really like to check out the DVD. That's a great record. But yeah, they've released so many bangers, JPD is a machine, and I feel like most of my fave bands have used a double drum line-up at some point so that always gets props from me! That OCS record, Memory Of A Cut Off Head, even has cello, viola and "proper" string/brass arrangements, really beautiful vocals from Brigid...it feels like a late summer afternoon lazing in bed with your girlfriend or boyfriend, and that special quality of light is catching the dust motes hanging in the air...that's the vibe I get off of that LP! Sorry for the blogpost, just wanna say quickly that the reason I don't use the term "Krautrock" anymore (apart from what I listed before) is 'cause I'm British myself...and it's not, fucking, I dunno, 1943 anymore!!! LOve him or hate him Stuart Maconie (Brit DJ/broadcaster/writer/musicologist who had a GREAT show on BBC6 Music playing HYPER obscure music, like old Argentine psych or Polynesian prog-rock; it was SO good) bought up the problematic nature of the term as far back as like 15 years ago, being a big big fan of the genre himself...and I know for a fact that some of the bands called "Krautrock" HATED the term vociferously! Anyhow blogpost over, sorry! Thanks again for the reply, love your content and your playing, you nailed the Oh Sees tunes mate :) Have to give Mutilator, Floating Coffin and Orc a listen today! Crazy how little research went into this video. Theyve been experimenting with two drummers for over a decade now. Also the tunings they use are much much weirder than he gives them credit for (almost none are drop tunings) and if you watch live videos you'll see hes pretty much completely wrong, the dream especially has some very prominent drone strings he's overlooked. Also no mention at all of the folk era? Even tho he showed multiple clips from it
