There is a research station, a small building in Antarctica. Compared to Mars, the South Pole is a tropical paradise. You can breath the air, water is plentiful, you won't be fried by radiation, and if there is a problem, help is not far away. Despite this, residents at the station must be rotated out every few months as severe psychological problems soon arise. Living on Mars would be a miserable experience.
@Daniela-pr7rz
@Daniela-pr7rz Ай бұрын
Why compare it to Antarctica and not with people living in space? we already have people living in space and the limiting factor on why they cannot stay more than a few months is lack of gravity and that is not the issue on Mars. Also, you compare Mars with today's Earth's worst pace, but in the event of nuclear winter, all planet could be inhabitable on surface and living underground here might be worse than living on Mars on the surface in some domes, of course. Also, we're lucky to have Mars as a next door planet, because if Jupiter or Saturn would be next, those are not "very hard", but impossible to colonize. Anyway, we should absolutely give it a try as being confined to eating, pooping and replicating without advancing has 100% chance of extinction on long term.
@Gabriel-br4qe
@Gabriel-br4qe Ай бұрын
@@Daniela-pr7rz Jupiter and Saturn have plenty of moons that could be just as colonizable as Mars tho. The problem is that with current technology the trip to the outer planets is still too long. As of your nuclear winter point, even in the worst case scenario it would not render our entire planet uninhabitable, but it could make life miserable for most people. Now what you need to understand about living in a lifeless planet like Mars is that the domes and living conditions would be super cramped and stressful, even privacy is a luxury and even the oxygen you breathe is accounted for. Going "out on a walk" to clear your head is not a possibility either unless you're in a spacesuit. And you can't just go back to Earth either, since the trip home is 7 months long at best. I absolutely want humanity to thrive and reach for the planets and the stars, but we have to be realistic and cautious about it. It's not just a matter of giving it a try, but improving our society and tech to the point that colonizing the solar system will feel like a cakewalk.
@abstuli
@abstuli Ай бұрын
@@Gabriel-br4qe These moons are even cooler than Mars. Several of Jupiter's moons are located in Jupiter's radiation belts and have such high radiation that humans will only survive minutes before they will die.
@Gabriel-br4qe
@Gabriel-br4qe Ай бұрын
@@abstuli It's true, however there are also some of these moons that could be reasonable candidates. Jupiter's moon Ganymede for example has a natural magnetosphere, the best radiation shielding that a space body can provide. But the trip to Jupiter is 3.5 years at the very least with current technology. Good enough for unmanned missions but terrible for crewed ones.

No one born in the next 100 years who doesn't become a super top expert in something related to working in space or a colonisation program will have to worry about ever setting foot on Mars. Ordinary people won't be going there for centuries, if ever. Of the experts who *do* go some day, many of them will be driven mad by life on a totally inhospitable world. Constant worry about radiation, temperature, the integrity of shelter, the availability of food and water plus the insane winds and sand storms, the differences in day length and gravity, the confinement to small spaces with other people, the near-impossibility of real-time communication with Earth and the inability to leave at will is going to annihilate even the toughest professionals. Hell - working in Antarctica for a year is enough to send a lot of people off the deep end. Mars will be like that dialled up well past 11.

There is one particular problem not mentioned here, that we can't even solve on Earth, psychological distress. There is a reason why the longest stay on the ISS is less than one year, and it isn't just the bone density degradation, Scientists are effectively worked to exhaustion every day, to keep them from thinking too much about where they are, and how precarious their survival is. We have a base in the Antarctic, which has a breathable atmosphere, gravity, water, rescue solutions just a few hours away, but the scientists have to be rotated out every few months because of severe psychological distress. When the resupply and shift change flights are delayed due to bad weather, there is an emergency stash of alcohol at the base, and the scientists are advised to get blind drunk, every day, until relief arrives.

There is actually nothing sinister behind it. Scientists often exaggerate possibilities to receive more funding. This is very normal and even a good thing because it accelerates the process of achieving their goals. Imagine if someone told you that something would take hundreds of years to accomplish-would you be interested in funding or even researching it to make it happen? Probably not, because you would never see it with your own eyes. However, it is still better to be optimistic about these things. Elon Musk is passionate about his work, and as a result, he is going to live a life full of passion, which is certainly a life worth living. ----- Without optimism in the human's body we would never be as far as we are today

I'm really glad you made this video. Elon isn't the designer of most of his companies, he's just a slightly Autistic capitalist building 💰 from his tribes of real creators. His change politically and his statements since 2014 tainted my opinion enough to realize he's not that learnedly smart or people smart, instead more like a salesman trying to pitch things to fool his fanbase rather than to really advance humanity. (Gwen Shotwell is the real reason SpaceX has become the top launch provider and trusted by the US government and military.) A few O'Neal cylinders rather a million walking dead on poisonous Martian soil by 2029 would better serve to save humanity from his greatest hits list, and Starship could be a very big part: First by making a moon base to both exploit resources and learn how to better survive in space, then helping gather asteroids for O'Neal cylinder resources and building them in less time (2060 to 2100) than terraforming Mars (starting 2035 to 3200}, and for less 💰. All this from research and IMHO.

The problem is his Kool Aid needs rational thought to dilute it, and he is smart enough to spin things to seem like being on the edge of possible (like the rescue sub for the boys in the cave) to well-soaked sci-fi acolytes. It wasn't until I began deep research for a sci-fi novel series that I realized what he was doing. So, multiply time lines by a minimum of 1.5 , normally 2.25, costs by 1.5, and tech development by as much as 5 because he tries to be Tony Stark spread far too thinly over massively hyped projects. His Tesla people he has treated like indentured servants, the staff that made guardrails for Twitter like excess overhead, Boring company a rich-people express lane demo, and PayPal another stolen PR hype that he was barely a part of. His NDAs are vicious, he's used women (Grimes, even some employees) as incubators for his legacy (except for Amber Herd, who refused and broke up, breaking his heart.) SpaceX only survived and prospered because he HAD to hire and pass control to Gwen, Bill Gerstenmaier, and Tom Mueller to make it and understand how to sell it to NASA and the Pentagon. After his betrayal of Ukraine by switching off Starlink just before they could drone strike the Black Sea Fleet and piers he cost literally thousands of Ukrainian lives, military and civilians, by letting the missile ships escape to later attack far inland. That to me was his final flaw ... He fears Putin's propaganda so badly he runs away, thinks he's saving humanity when he is enabling a force that will kill millions of not stopped. That's what summed him up in a nutshell... A fearful opportunist who the Pentagon should force to agree to work with national security or be excluded from contracts until he does.

Test: Build a self-sustaining city deep in Antarctica. Prove it's possible there. Work out the tech and techniques there. If you can't do that in Antarctica you sure as hell can't do it on Mars. Even exploring Mars with humans, much less building a self-sustaining base, if possible will almost certainly be accomplished by the Chinese. Such an endeavor requires societal, civilizational level resources, commitment and collective cooperation. Resources and cultural values the Chinese have, and that we in the West unfortunately do not. Our resources are hoarded by wealthy douchebags (like Musk) and far too many worship the supposed (though never proven) creativity of libertarian techbros (like Musk, again). Yet they somehow always end up sucking up public resources and contracts (despite their libertarianism and supposed rugged individualism) while very often failing to even meet the terms of the contract. For example, Musk having taken public dollars to send an orbiter around the Moon and back. A project that is years behind schedule and he that he is not even remotely close to producing the rocket and capsule tech (so still unproven he can even do it) for necessary. The "Dear Moon" trip was supposed to happen in 2025 iirc, yet Musk can't even get his Starship rocket to a successful Earth orbit without losing control and blowing up with ZERO payload. Musk is a fraud. Maybe the biggest fraud in human history. And a very likely a literal criminal fraud in regards to his promises regarding Tesla cars/trucks and FSD. A subject for another rant... ;)

There already is a base in Antarctica, it is manned throughout the year, but the scientists have to be rotated out every few months otherwise they develop severe psychological problems. Elon Musk didn't lie about living on Mars.....A million people on Mars by 2050 is a projected goal. Elon has achieved a vast number of his projected goals in each of his company's, from tesla to SpaceX, Star link, Neuro Link, Boring company and many more.

It's a video made by a youtuber. Don't take it seriously. The scientist who made world's most successful rocket doesn't know about the radiation and problems that have to tackle before going to Mars. Obviously they do and they do far more than any youtuber

@tinkumonikalita7459 The Van Allen belt is apparently a doosy. It boggles the mind that NASA has lost ALL of the research data, blueprints, technical orders, materials list, and composites required in order to get Buz and Niel through the V.A. radiation belt to get to the moon.....

So if you take water off earth for every launch, won’t that mean each trip irrevocably removes water from our planet till we lose too much? It’ll take time, but I don’t think that’s a good idea if it’s true.

Actually, it is a good idea to use nukes. 1) there’s nothing on marsh to damage. The nukes (several) wouldn’t be set off above the atmosphere so they act like many tiny suns and melt the ice. 2) if you don’t include the yellow cake then a nuke is just a big boom, no fallout. But the heat from the blasts would melt the ice at the poles. The actual concern is that it wouldn’t produce enough gas to thicken the atmosphere. So either more nukes would be needed or terraform another planet.

The most hostile environment to humans on Earth is far more hospitable than the most hospitable location on Mars. Heres an idea, why dont we just let Elon go by himself first to check it out. It would be a lot cheaper and he can surely bump that timeline up. Lets saaay...a population of one on Mars by 2026(?)
