Lies of P Critique - More Than Just Influence

Lies of P is a game that takes a lot of heavy influence from the Soulsborne series, a lot of ideas and mechanics are lifted from those games and implement into it, however the game also introduces a lot of new fresh ideas that make it stand out amongst other souls-likes, so many interesting things to the point Lies of P is able to stand on its own two feet and become more than just influence.
So lets look at it and dig into what makes it so special.

I’ve played many a souls and soulslike games, but I don’t think I’ve ever had such a tonal shift of not caring about an NPC to being completely engrossed in them like I have with Arlecchino. Like as soon as I entered that secret room I was not only captivated that he was an obvious Pluto reference, but his following lines of dialogue especially after finishing Viningi’s quest line is probably the most I’ve been just awestruck by an NPC in a game ever. Not to mention his Voice Acting is Kalé cut content level!

He doesn't die at the end tho.... He's just exhausted like Sofia noticed. Also Arleccino was insane because the rules of the covenant weren't instilled onto him. He was the first puppet and because of his rampage, the covenant was introduced to the rest of the puppets. Arleccino's human soul was just raw and honestly had a free will.

I never got into the first one but I would love to try it someday if I could find the time. I only got to play Nioh 2 during lockdown and had a blast with it.

​@@burdenofbest I haven't played Nioh 2 but I am currently running like 3 different playthroughs of Nioh for video purposes and its a major blast to play. Though I've heard Nioh 2 is just everything from Nioh 1 but better so there might not be much allure to play it outside seeing "where it started"

Andreas was the first boss I got stuck on. But I played on release when he had a lot more hp.

Yeah I heard that the game was a lot harder on release I never had the chance to play it then but I wish I could have seen how difficult was.

I’m gonna push back on BRB a little. The siblings only show up at certain hp%s, and Eldest is supposed to cycle his aggro so you don’t get completely mobbed all at once. Granted, their ai used to be a *lot* worse before patch 1.01, and summoning a specter would screw it up even more. It’s fine if you think the fight isn’t great, but the community consensus seems to be that it’s probably the best example of a gank fight a soulslike has had so far, and I think it would’ve been a good mention that so you could contrast your experience with it.

This game was the first in the genre that I had the chance to experience and it put a knife in my heart just like RDR2... This masterpiece became my favorite game of the souls genre and after this I played all FromSofts games and the only one that came somewhat close to Lies of P was Bloodborne. This was my first and I think the first game you play in this genre will be your favorite forever!

The first I ever played was Bloodborne and whilst I do have a special place in my heart for Dark Souls 1 I would say Bloodborne is my favourite in the genre.

Funnily enough I realized where the King of Puppets may have gotten his inspiration. The manga that got an anime adaption around the time I finished the game was, Pluto. There's a robot in this series with the same predicament and I was chilled by both of them because the question they propose about nature.

I could be wrong but I think the DLC will be set before the end of the game with the broken stargazer being the entrance point but who knows it could be anything. Super excited to see what they do with it.

"some just arent that powerful" it seems that someone hasent learned the 'true fulminous combo'. it can essentially take out any miniboss without them being able to do anything to stop you. also every single acid pool from the acid arm does damage simultaneously if the enemy is big enough to stand in them, no matter how many you lie down. even enemies that resist acid damage just get melted if they are big chonkers. insert generic 'puppet string final upgrade is good comment here', but even its ranged utility is especailly helpful when you dont want to waste throwables to avoid tricky platform fights even the mine arm can insta kill mini bosses if you pair it with the falcon eyes to lure them into the triple mine trap. even the legion arm of steel has a special mechanic that parries all attacks its fist comes into contact with and *doubles* its damage (its not good but damn its cool)

...uhh when KoR said humans and puppets are same, he meant it literally. Ergo is crystallized soul. Ever puppet that has ergo inside has a soul of human trapped inside them. Including our MC P and the King of puppets, Romeo. They hold the soul of Carlo and his friend when he was a human, Romeo inside them. It's quite unfortunate if you missed such a crucial detail.

Not a bad video, it's a shame it sounds like you didn't engage with some of the systems that are really good and helpful. For instance, the Legion Arms are great for experimentation and are actually really strong. The landmine one is phenomenal for staggering enemies, especially when surrounded. Even the basic, non upgradable punching arm is a quick way to stagger enemies when their health turns white. Items are also very powerful and useful, particularly for getting status effects to proc much quicker than with weapon attacks, and their range is ridiculous! To each their own for boss fights, i guess but watching your King's Flame Fuoco footage it is clear you never learned the fight. His worst attack, the arena wide ground flame, is easily avoided just by standing behind a pipe. The Black Rabbit Brotherhood gave me fits too but now that i took the time to learn the big bro's block timings it is one of my favorites and i love that if you break his weapon in round one, it stays broken(and therefore weaker) in round 2 as well. Lies of P easily has the best character upgrade system in a Soulslike and the weapons are all so varied but also viable. It's not just strength or dex builds either because even if you primarily level Advance, there are multiple great weapons that you can use to punish elemental weaknesses more than physical damage.

Interesting seeing your boss rankings. I mostly agreed but had totally different experiences on some bosses. Like Nameless Puppet not being that hard? I struggled for probably at least a couple hours on him, he is about as hard as Laxasia IMO. And I know I'm in the minority, but I don't get the hype around Victor. He is a pretty cool chad boss visually, but I just could not gel with his moveset and he has a pretty annoying boss runback. The green monster boss was really annoying too if only because if you mess up once or twice you basically are guaranteed to get decay status which is a BS status IMO. Health damage is whatever, but rapidly reducing weapon durability is just annoying. I feel like Neowiz should have done either health or durability, but both is just not a fun mechanic. Overall, I really liked this game and it's insane that this is their first major release (I know they have some other smaller rhythm games etc but this clearly had a lot of time and budget) I can't wait for the DLC, and whatever game they make next. Lies of P could use some polish, but in my eyes this could be their version of Demon's Souls. Yeah there are some rough bits, but you can clearly see the immense talent and creativity in the game.

I like that our boss ranks are different and that people had a different experience with the game, Nameless was pretty tough for me but it didn’t take me as long to beat him as some other fights I also forgot to rank him he’s A tier. And yeah I also can’t wait for the DLC and what the studio does next.

Boss design is at Sekiro level though, so it's odd referring to DeS relative to LoP as a start up, because LoP is already sorta capped on boss design within this realm of combat mechanics. Though I suppose they can work on level design and other such aspects.

@@burdenofbest you know. I just got done beating bloodborne, again. And I think it was just the richness of the world and mythos of that game just resonates so hard, that the Pinocchio world they had going felt very contrived to me. It was cool sure. And I do appreciate LOP, it was more about the world to me that I felt uninspired by. And I didn’t find the gameplay to be that much more compelling than the amazing games that already existed…ie: sekiro, bloodborne, souls/elden ring. But again. I think it’s good. And for people who maybe have never played a fromsoft game, or maybe just one from soft game, I’m sure it’s freaking amazing. Because it’s so damn similar to it. I just think it’s a commendably sufficient, game that learned from masterpieces. It’s an opinion, not an in depth analysis of the game, I don’t want to get cooked up by LOP fans lol Side note; I’m seeing people bring up Nioh as a souls like a lot. And I know it falls in the category. It’s just too different and loot based ( freaking incredible and fun…) to be compared to the types of game LOP was going for.

Your opinion is completely valid on Lies of P and I can understand the criticism, and for Nioh I class it as a souls like but again you are right with its loot system being completely different and even the gameplay loop but I myself would class it as a souls like just because of the vibe and it borrows a lot of mechanics from the souls series that are intrinsic to those games. The funny part is how big a kick in the balls some players got with Nameless Puppet because of that. I wondered why so many people seemed to resent that boss, especially after dealing with Laxasia. And then I noticed in my own game in later NG+ cycles that the birdbath wasn't there before the boss room and I laughed a bit. Why the devs would do that to more casual players is kinda weird to me. Unless they wanted to send a message, since you can indeed give up and relinquish the heart. So this kind of "try again in NG+ lol" is cheeky af to tell someone who only did what the devs allowed them to do. I wonder what their approach will be in the DLC.
