If you have had diabetes during your pregnancy, whether you started the pregnancy with diabetes or became diabetic during the pregnancy, there’s a good chance that you will have to deal with diabetes in the future.
Up to 60 to 70% of women with diabetes in pregnancy go on to become diabetic, or they stay diabetic.
After you have your baby, one of the first things you’re going to notice is that your glucoses come down immediately. Maybe not entirely down to normal, but you’re going to notice a change almost immediately after the baby is born. Different providers manage diabetes in different ways after delivery.
Usually, we want to keep checking your glucose fasting two hours after your meals for at least a few days to see where these are going to settle out.
Many times your glucoses will come to normal right away. And if that’s the case, you can breathe a little sigh of relief. Have a little pie or whatever it is that you’ve been craving during the pregnancy.
After this, make up your mind to get back to work because you may not be done yet.
Watch this week's episode and leave me a comment below if you have any questions about gestational diabetes or how to manage your diet after gestational diabetes.

As I watch this i’m whipping tears away. I likely developed type 2 postpartum. I lost a lot of weight before I got pregnant and exercised a lot but got really sick when pregnant and stopped moving as much and ate a lot of carbs in my first trimester. My parents are both type 2 diabetics so I knew I may develop it later in life but I never expected I would have it as a 27 year old mom. I know having bad genes is not my fault but I feel so ashamed.

Thank you so much for making this video. I had GD with both of my pregnancies. I’m one year postpartum and my fasting levels are still high. This video has provided me the education and encouragement I needed to schedule an appt with my PCP and get my glucose metabolism in check.

Hi Dr.Tracy I’m pregnant with GD. I wondering if after I give birth and no more breastfeed. Can I do IF 16/8 ? Is it going to be safe for me?

Hey dr tracy, I am 6 months postpartum; I've been checking my blood sugar every once in a while at home to check my blood sugar. It has been on the edge from time to time. I woke up with a 125mg on a 10 hour fasting morning :( I was shocked... am I still diabetic because of my pregnancy? I regulated my blood sugar with diet and I was ok thankfully, but what about now?

Mariam, remember that more than half of people with gestational diabetes become diabetic or stay diabetic after pregnancy. Continue to eat well, stay active, and give yourself some grace - everyone has an elevated glucose now and then. If you weren't retested for diabetes after your pregnancy, be sure and do this. And get a yearly A1c test, which will let you know if you are becoming pre-diabetic or diabetic.

Why would a t2d or woman with gestational diabetes be put in insulin if they already have too much?
@DrTracyPapa
@DrTracyPapa 3 жыл бұрын
Sometimes more insulin is needed in pregnancy to move glucose from the blood into the cells. Lowering mom's blood glucose helps lower the baby's blood glucose. Ultimately, though, Type 2 diabetes can't be reversed with insulin. After the baby comes, we focus on diet management, healthy activity, and optimizing weight.
