Life after my viral ballet video got me a scholarship - BBC Africa

Eleven-year-old Anthony Mmesoma Madu, Nigeria’s viral ballet dancer, has received multiple scholarships from around the world to pursue his passion.
One of those scholarships came from the prestigious Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at American Ballet Theatre in the USA.
As Anthony prepares to embark on a journey of a lifetime in 2021, he describes how things have changed for him.

I just wanted to clear this up for anyone confused in the comments. What most dancers do who are from other countries or who don't live in the state is stay in dorms. Most of the major ballet schools have dorms, and it's quite a common thing to live in them (I've stayed in them for SI's but not year-rounds). I've heard from all of my friends that have been to ABT JKO that the dorms are actually really good and they have full live-in resident managers (However, I heard that you must be 15 to live in the specific dorms for JKO, I think for younger students the school arranges trusted host families). According to the ballet students I've met from other countries, it is a crazy experience to move away from home, but it's worth it because the training they're getting. This is not to say that dancers won't miss their family or anything like that, but they are in a pretty safe environment and normally develop really close connections with the people they're training with. I hope this helps for anyone confused about the living situation!

I agree but his visa catagory is probably a student visa or an extraordinary talent visa it is to study or use his talent. So I think it wouldn't qualify to extend to his parents. Because of his age he wouldn't be left alone he will dorm and have a caretaker like a house mother who is available 24/7 and will also have his own stipend. Most house moms are usually experienced and educated handling children and a child's adjustment to a new place. I used to work with teens that would go to boarding school and they were actually taken cared of. I am sure like all kids he will first miss home and not like the food but then they make friends. But not every situation is perfect. Boarding school is not really normal in the U.S. but around the world schools are usually located in metropolitan areas so sending a child away to school at around his age is normal in various places around the world. I pray 🙏 for him and his family to get the blessings they deserve!

I hug my phone as a parent would hug a child and I of my self was in theaters my advice as a mother to you is that God always hand pick his best eaven when we don't know he is working it out for the good in our life go with God grace and blessings your family will be all well he will take care of you and all of them. I know your new friend will work hard to get into the dance studio be kind to all of them that is showing God loves. I live in New York and will make an extra effort to see you and if I can help in any way I will and if I can huge you I will I have two daughters and three granddaughter we will hope to see you on one of the famous theaters poforming some time soon hopefully Alvin Hayley dance studio will be able to feature you in one of their products. There is SUCH a large African population in the city. If he goes to fashion district on 7th ave, it’s near his school. He can overhear people speaking his language, and see men working and taking care of families... not dumb rich people, just regular guys with (mostly) delivery jobs, or kitchens, some standing in Times Square trying to sell bus tours lol. It sounds funny, but there is comfort in knowing people like you are only a block away. If you have to run for your life, you know where to run. That’s helpful in a big city. It can make all the difference, even to an adult but especially a child.
