Life after sepsis: Health consequences among survivors of severe sepsis

Each year millions of patients worldwide suffer from an episode of severe sepsis. With advances in early detection and antibiotic therapy, the majority of these patients are released from the hospital and appear to be healthy. However, it has been suspected that many are discharged with a new, poorly understood array of long-term cognitive and functional impairments. This video defines sepsis, outlines the current evidence for long-term impairment and discusses the implications of these findings.

I'll reply re my case back in 2016 was caused from legioaires body breaking down i ended up in icu following with a heart attack 2 days later and a stroke 2 days after that as a result from dealing with compost as i'm a landscaper was a heavy drinker and smoker putting me more at risk i now no lomger smoke and have given up alcohol after 2 attempts thinking after 3 1/2 years of no drinking i'll just use for special occasions which then i i was drinking every night i then sarted having seiqures ..... i now no longer drink alcohol after now having 3 serious caesars where i have no control the third one a result from stress ? from employing guys on meth which was a nightmare ..... In August 2020 my husband and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary. We went out to eat but on the way home I began getting sick. I was up all night, vomiting and severe diarrhea. In the morning I told my husband to call an ambulance. When I got to the ER my blood pressure was 48 and I was severely bloated and screaming in pain. I had emergency surgery where 2/3rds of my colon was removed because blood flow to it had stopped and it was necrotic. I had a colostomy when I woke up 3 days later in ICU. I also lost all hearing in my left ear. That was nearly 4 years ago and I still have lasting effects from septic shock. I wouldn't wish this on anyone!

I was 19 and a freshman in college when I got sepsis from severe pneumonia. 3 years later, I'm constantly gaslighted by medical professionals. Now I struggle to work, leaving my family to think I'm faking everything and kicking me out for not holding a job down... Life sucks even 3 years after being discharged.

I am so sorry. In 2021 i had septic shock 4 times that year, spent time in ICU, I just found out about PSS, I thought i was going crazy, we are not crazy and I supposed to be dead, but I'm still here its so hard with all the effects of PSS. I wish you best of health!!!!

My bestie is in the hospital now fighting sepsis infection 😫. I'm praying she pulls through. However, knowing the potential complications and potential side effects, my heart is overwhelmed for her. She is in an induced coma hooked up to dialysis. Knowing my friend and her faith in Jesus, she may not want to live a life of suffering if she pulls through. 🙏 what a wicked disease.

its been 4 months since I've left the hospital from severe sepsis. My life has changed completely, depression, PTSD, and hard to focus on things. I have no feeling or movement in my left leg below the knee, I have numbness throughout my lower half from severe nerve damage, muscle loss, and can't exercise. I can't work, I can't take care of my son by myself, and dependent on others still. I pray no-one gets sepsis, I would do anything to have my old life back

I feel the same way. I had it at the beginning of 8th grade. I’m am a junior now in high school. I was an outgoing kid before I had it. Now I am reminded so much of the experiences I had in the hospital. I have severe social anxiety and I’m always on edge at school. I hate it. I’m so glad for my nurse that caught it early. My mother contracted sepsis in a nursing home I believe. Or after a procedure on her neck done at the hospital. Such negligence ,I'm appalled. My mother went into a coma on her birthday and died on Christmas day. I will NEVER get over it. It's wise to be aware that procedures done in a hospital can cause sepsis . Infections should be looked for after any procedures done in hospitals.

I survived severe Septic Shock was the worst feeling ever. I'm a complete paraplegic while in Well Star Burn unit my blood pressure was so low it didn't register on BP cuff or manual cuff. Had a pic line inserted while I was alert the entire time. I had several skin grafts for 3rd% burns on both legs and around groin area from scalding water! I have noticed the my memory is not the same. I was in good health despite my SCI of 39 years. Puts me at ease knowing it is not something I have imagined. Keep up the good work of getting the record straight!

I suffered from Severe sepsis 2yrs ago when I was 9 years old. I would lie in my hospital bed wondering if I would wake up the next morning. I was told by the doctor that there wasn’t a chance that I would survive but hear I am now. I was in hospital for a month. I didn’t eat anything or drink anything. My friend visited me everyday after school and at the week ends and I remember every time she left she told me she loved me and that gave me that little bit more hope of me surviving severe sepsis. x

I have a chronic UTI and a chronic Pelvis abscess which was a wound that was the origin of the sepsis after a surgery... I had no idea as no one informed me of the possible after effects, I'm just learning this 5 years later... my life is miserable from the chronic UTI and abscess, but I'm starting to realize I'm one of the lucky few who survived without major physical disability.

OH my gosh...Septic shock was terrible!! Had it when I was 5 months pregnant. In the hospital for 6 days, but was sick for a week before that. Don't wait too long to see a doctor people!! Fever of 106+, worst pain ever...hallucinating...shaking so bad I couldn't put my shirt back on when we first got to the hospital. Ugh! Started from a UTI --> kidney infection --> septic shock THEN got pneumonia on top of all that, at the same time. Thank God I made it with the help of an amazing team of doctors and nurses!!

My mum was my rock I aged for her for 20 years in last 2 year of her life until she died in 2014 , we didn't know nor did family or mum that she was in end stage are failure gor last few months mid August time I'd had doctors up often spoken to them on phone as she had a very bad cough breathlessness , she had had 8 lots of antibiotics in as many werks and wasent improving g then she fell early hours of morning to kerp story short we were both kn ambulance going to a+ e even though we were taken into rexfus it didn't teig I left her relatively okay Monday evening just yhought if eill be another short stay on the Tuesday morning rang ward they said could you ring later were dealing 2ith a poorly patient I put phone down ten minutes later the ward sister rang and said it was you mum we were sering to she's relapsed very unwell I rushed through in a taxi I went znd saw mum they asked me into office they said she's stable for now but this could happen again if your not here what would you want us to do and I know mums was full on that she believed in wuslity of life so I signed paperwork for not to rescuitate they said you can come and dprnd all day and night with her, I knew it was bad they said you need yo get rest of family here and friends who want to see her mu 2as still talkative and chirpyish so I said to medics I don't mum at this stage eould cope with knowing she was dying, Tuesday evening I went home she relapsed again go family back, so Wednesday I stayed at a noisy motel got no sleep my mobile,e rang at 4 amhad it in bed with me so id hear it it was ward she,had gone town again I think taxi ptoberly broke speed limit to get ne backto hospital only 12 minsftom hospital I dashed ip yo ward so I got fsmily back ghis time she was gradually decorating they said all the strong sntibiotics had failed and they were starting to see signs of organ failure we all stayed thursday night Friday morning they asked if they vould put mum o palliative care pathway so we fid up u tilthenshe had notcomplsined of pain but a new nurse on ward they told mu she was a palliative care sister asked her I voulds so mum said yes she hadbad pain and the sister came back with a sringe that she put on the cannula my mum was sleepy and by early Friday tea was in a derp sleep she fidnt like the oxygen csnula up her nose so come mid evening Friday her breathing was calm do they stopped her oxygen doped ip on morphine and she never woke again it was a veautiful oeace death at about 3am onthe Saturday with us all sat by her bed, cause ofdeath was very severechest infection and pneumonia znd sepsis componded😮by chronic heart failure I still miss her like he'll sepsis is nasty❤❤❤

My episode with sepsis was similar. I was not pregnant but contracted a UTI which went to my kidneys then into my blood stream. I was delirious and hallucinating from both the UTI and my high temperature. Laying in a hospital bed feeling so scared and confused really shook me. When I came home, it took over a month for me to feel better mentally. Thinking that you were pregnant then had a pneumonia on top of sepsis is crazy!! You were lucky. 🙂

Some people lose limbs to Sepsis. I was very lucky. I do think my cognitive function was permanently impacted, though. However, when I came out of hospital there was nobody to explain to me that it wasn't as simple as just being critically ill, getting better and then being back to how I was before. I was just told to undertake gentle exercise and eat healthily. This information, from America, is shedding new light on a lot of the things that have been happening to me for the last eight years. Conversely - I wonder if my recovery would have been as good as it was if I had been told to expect lingering problems. I had two choices - keep up or get left behind. I might be kind of lucky to have had people, around me, that didn't know I'd have long term problems and possibly wouldn't have gone easier on me even if they did! On the way home, from hospital, I was deployed as the trolley pusher when we stopped off at a supermarket. I could barely stand up! I was using the trolley like a zimmer frame. And my trials only got more extraordinary once we got home. Maybe I'm the kind of person who thrives on a lack of compassion!

Haha, I was in the same shoes. No one told me about any long lasting consequences. I just became aware today watching videos 5 years later. I think I'm lucky I don't think I've had any severe consequences, though I have a chronic UTI and an abscess on my pelvis, which I didn't think could be related to the sepsis, I might bring it up to my urologist and gp next time I see them. My depression did get much worse soon after though, again I did not link it to it, so it might be worth exploring. How can you survive such an ordeal and not being informed by doctors or hospital staff!? It's mind boggling, I spent a week in ICU for crying out loud.

@@ponnammamg4333 hi I also had stents put into my kidneys. The surgery went well and they removed the stents. The doctor said yes it can happen again but all I can do is keep an eye on it and if anything seemed off, I would have to go to the hospital again. Thankfully I haven’t had this happen anymore and I hope it never does. Also, hopefully your mom will fully recover and she won’t face this again

@@bronxbully6261 I had severe sepsis. The weeks before I got it, I was having racing heart and breathing hard. Thought it was anxiety. When the sepsis actually hit, it was FAST. I went from not really feeling too good in general, to unable to breathe and very confused in about 20 minutes. My sister called an ambulance. It didn't hurt, if that helps you any. If it hit her like it hit me (I'm a woman too), she didn't play around with her life, she went from ok and just kind of tired and under the weather to disoriented and confused and crashing in literally minutes. I was AT the hospital being treated within 10 minutes of 911 call. I desatted and coded in the ER, and was resuscitated. The whole thing, from the start of the shortness of breath and confusion, to being ventilated and sent to ICU was about half an hour. If I would have passed away from it, it honestly wouldn't have been a bad way to go. I wasn't horribly miserably sick before it hit, just felt vaguely crappy and anxious. And like I said IT WAS FAST.

@@myadorablefosters she had a racing heart and breathing fast to about 3 weeks before she died but not to sound nasty only during sex when she would climax so I thought nothing of it the rest of the time during sex she was normal iam a very specific person very detailed thought 10 steps ahead type person she wasnt her grandmother tried to say her sepsis came from a tampon and said if she doesnt make it i want you to come to the house and tell you something i never met her so I didnt go to her house she tried to say over the phone my wife sepsis came from a whole condom being in her 6 months so far up her it indicated foul play and the comdom disentegrated cause the doctors was trying to get DNA evidence off it but that comdom story sounds suspect to me

I had a pre cancerous mass that ate a large necrotic hole on the entire back side of my left leg. I went to St. Luke’s and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital’s many times. They kicked me out every time. Bc it was one of their surgeons Dr. Leo Sullivan who ignored the sepsis and necrosis. My ex sister dragged me out of my apartment against my will to St. Luke’s where she still is an RN, off duty, she lied to her coworkers told them I was faking it. I was left for dead on the er psych floor. No Doctors, no nurses, running a 105 fever screaming in agony for 10 hours until my heart stopped! Rushed to surgery after I had a heart beat. I had septicemia for 2 1/2 months. She tried coming to my room after surgery to finish what she had started. She wanted me dead. My sister’s RH, LB and SR. Have gaslight my own mother not to ever talk to me again. Now I have TB, CHF and SCC. I knew I had sepsis and the medical staff at MVHS. Don’t care about patients lives. I have had sepsis since then 5 more times. My immune system is weaker every time.

I beat Endocarditis after five months of IV anabiotic’s and dialysis. Almost 5 years later now, I have some side effects. I feel as though I have memory loss short term. Heart palpitations, swelling particularly in my hands but it’s noticeable throughout my body on most days. I have high blood pressure I take blood pressure medication and a water pill to help reduce the fluid retention. I noticed that when I eat foods with sugar and sodium I feel horrible. And I have started to exercise for about four months now I am hoping to live as long as possible.

@@yup1579 when I eat sugar or foods that have sugar in it yeah I get really tired. What I’ve done to help this is I limit my sugar intake, especially at night time and I drink water only. I will drink coffee sometimes if I do not eat processed foods in the morning or sugar, in the morning, I will have energy and water gives me energy also believe it or not.

Toward the end of last year in October. I went to visit my Moma I took one look at her and took her to our local small town hospital. Something wasn't right. They had to incubate her and sent by helicopter to a bigger hospital. I had 3 months old baby and started just to wait till the next day to visit, something kept urging me to go. I don't like being praised for saving her life, because I believe that it was not me that saved if I had my way I would have went home because I was so tired. It turns out she had double pneumonia that became severely septic her kidneys and liver shut down. She stayed in a drug induced coma for a week. The doctors were certain that she would have not made much longer at home and almost didn't in the hospital. She stayed till Nov then released her. In Jan I pregnant with second child my husband and I were living her by then she said that she felt bad and couldn't breathe one morning in January a couple of days after her birthday I called the paramedics she delvoped double pneumonia again and had to be incubated again for 8 days and stayed in the hospital till Feb. She almost didn't make it. Every time she even gets a cold or anything to the Dr or hospital we go. She's be sick a couple of times since but since we don't take any chances they had caught it in time now.

I suffered septic shock from severe viremia at the age of 11 in 2003. Final/Principal Diagnosis Severe viremia Secondary Diagnosis Septic shock, acute renal failure, coagulopathy, enceplopathy Comorbidities ADHD Principal Procedure IV antibiotics (vancomycin, flucioxacilin, acyclovir, cefotaxime, roxithromycin & erythromycin) Secondary Procedures. Pain team involvement (amitriptyline, ketamine infusion, PCA morphine) IV fluids (multiple boluses) Physiotherapy Psychiatry consultation Metabolic consultation MRI brain Lumbar puncture. To this day no one understands how much I suffered, how much I continue to suffer and why I question why I am still here to suffer...

My daughter Noel passed from this horrible disease she was the most beautiful baby ever , till this day I don’t exactly know where the infection came from she was just fine March 19, 2021 - next day blue lips fainting and unconscious March 20th 2021 - they told me HLH or sepsis / it was confirmed sepsis ☹️ She was my only daughter. She later lost brain activity I blame myself I should’ve took her for a checkup I should’ve took her I dunno how this happened 10 days she was gone.

My dad was saying my moms name I woke up probably any other night I would have not heard him. He was puking and was weak. He refused to go to the er. But when I heard him say my moms name we called 911 turned out he had sepsis and aspirationed pneumonia he then passed away on Father’s Day last year

Hi, sorry to hear about all your sepsis experiences. I had penumonia and sepsis 2017 resulting in needing a thoracotomy and needing a chest drain. Im almost certain that my spelling is not as good since (does this silly?) and since being told how close to being fatal my symptoms were i have frequent anxiety everytime i cough, my back aches or ive got a cold. My operation may have been a result of negligence had the paramedics spotted the symptoms but they did not. I ignored thei advice to go home and rest (if i had of i may very well be dead) and i went straight to my doc. Has anyine here had experience with medical negligence claim for a similiar incident and if so how much do you think i can expect to recieve? im from uk

I'm thinking about a negligence claim after I was wheeled into a corner and left to die. All because they wanted a covid swab. 18 hrs....I was in agony. I was also covid negative and had a perforated appendix. Apparently they can't tell the difference

My sister was sent hoome.from 3 hospitals and when fit admitted had covid double pneumonia. She spent 4 days icu and 2 in regular and sent home. She was weak and tired and the next day SCREAMING in pain that she pulled a muscle in her back. I was telling family she needed to go back to the ER and they were like well.... 3 hrs later my little sister called the ambulance. Sepsis. Double covid pneumonia needed a chest tube everything. She just got discharged today. I told my family if she so much as complains of any slight pain AMBULANCE. No hesitation

2 1/2 week coma and total organ failure. It's causation. I forgot most all my children's lives, my memory's and have major problems with short term future memory too. So they need to be doing g a lot more work to help Sepsis patients of all ages! Massage therapy for the ones when were on. Bed for extended periods of time along with physical therapy. Testing for PTSD, and brain issues for every one in bed long term... With mostly or all total organ failure! This shit is real...

I had sepsis back in 2018 due to a perforated bowel. Was in a coma for a while and my kidneys failed and they had to operate on me twice to sort it out, and I have a stoma. I was in the hospital for two months. It took them a while to find the right antibiotics. I kept suffering secondary infections for almost two years after I left the hospital and now I function on prescription pain killers due to my body experiencing extreme aches as well as some pains. But even three years on, my memory is a lot worse than it was and I really struggle to concentrate. I still need naps on most afternoons (I can't work). I have to do things bit by bit and have to take many breaks throughout the day (Have a shower, break, sort laundry, break, lunch, break, then nap etc). I also feel more anxious than I used to (I always have had anxiety due to Asperger's, but it has increased) and I don't get a full night's sleep. I'm not even that old, I'm in my early 30s. I've never been diagnosed with post sepsis syndrome, but I think I'm affected.

My story is similar to yours. I’ve just been learning about the long term effects from sepsis as I have been struggling lately. How do you get diagnosed with post sepsis syndrome? I have several different doctors who have been treating me for other numerous complications I’ve had due to a emergency perforated ulcer surgery I was in the ICU on life support for over a week due to the sepsis attacking my body. The physicians in the ICU looking back on my medical records as I had gone to emergency several times before I actually had surgery they said I was already becoming sepsis. The night before everything started going downhill I was at an emergency department and a physician sent me home He did not even look at my bloodwork they showed me my blood work once I came to that day before and he must not even have looked at it there was critical everywhere all the surgeons kept apologizing over and over for this doctors mistake. They figured if I didn’t get help when I did I might’ve had a few hours to live. This happened to me just over two years ago and it’s just been a nightmare of ongoing infections complications just so many things too much to write out. I am glad that I am looking into the sepsis side of the long term affects and a lot is making sense to me. I hope you get well and wish you the best. Why not mention the vagus nerve ? Burnout causes same issues : cortisol increase, cognitive impairment, functional issues, muscle loss, memory, etc. All stress related.

my father died due to sepsis 😭😭 i am from india my father was having t cell lymphoma he was taken to the hospital due to low bp and even after giving medication in icu he was not able survive due to sepsis shock and mods(multiple organ failure)

I have had urine infection on and off since March of this year. My 1 antibiotic has been given to me 5 times during this period it has not worked. Now I still have pain on urination, producing less than 50mls a day, headache, fatigue, flank pain, abdomen pain yet my Dr said change your catheter which I have done 6 times.. he didn't listen and has given up on helping me... I have a suprapubic catheter. My Asthma and copd is worse. The dizziness and pain is driving me nuts.. Really don't know what to do.. I hate asking for help, I don't want to waste anyone's time but I do feel so weak and in so much pain... WHY don't Dr's help people like me??? I am probably making fuss about nothing..

I got sepsis which I was in coma. And on a respiratory for three weeks the hospital sent me to a Rehab&CareCenter I could not do anything it took three therphyist to give me therphy I also had a trake and a gtube I lost my ability to walk I’m in a wheelchair now but I can walk with a walker but a short distance only I think it also affected my speech and my breathing I will live out my life in the facility

They have now done away with the “severe sepsis” tier, it is now under “septic shock”. I recovered after a gallbladder gave it to me. I was totally out of it…don’t remember anything else til I woke up upon extubation from a ventilator days later. I knew that my cognitive issues were worse after I came home. Now, I know the cause Was the sepsis. Lost some kidney function due to it, too. Awful stuff! 🌈⛅️

I thought I had it back at one point and panicked and called an ambulance... it was just a fever from my chronic UTI. What I remember from the one I had is waking up in the middle of the night with severe chills and shivering so much I had a hard time speaking, a pounding headache, and vomiting. I hated that feeling.
